Newbie and getting married in May 2014 - yes, this year!

Littlemrs, 31 January, 2014 at 07:50 Posted on Planning 0 11

Hi all

I've just found this website and thank goodness! We got engaged a month ago and we are not ones to draw things out so he set the date for May this year. It seems however all suppliers totally freak when you tell them the date! I have managed to find my dress (more on that later though) and he has picked his suit. I am having problems finding my 9 year old daughter a suitable dress though. I am very strict on length - must be below the knee - and I'm looking for a champagne/mink colour - any suggestions? I'm also looking for suggestions on a bridesmaid dress as not found that yet either.

im quite shocked at how much there is to think about when 2 families come together - he's English and I'm Scottish so he's wearing a suit but my side will wear kilts and then there's our son. My side thinks he should wear a kilt but my fiancé - his dad - his wearing a suit. In other words 'drama, drama, drama'.

anyway - all words of advice and suggestions welcome Smiley smile We are having a registrar but have absolutely no idea how that goes on the day. To us the most important part is actually getting married and becoming one as a family. That's why we chose a small wedding at a place that means something to us - thought it would be easy and straight forward but already I feel like I'm eating my words ha ha.

look forward to hearing from people Smiley smile

Welcome to the fold Littlemrs! I'm a May bride too. What date have you booked? You're a brave lady to plan it all in that time, but tbh I've been doing mine for an age now and wonder if I would've been better to do it in less time!!! If you're on Facebook, have a look for 2014 Brides...an amazing group that I'm sure will be able to help you. x

Hello and welcome! The high street is great for BM dresses - the spring/summer styles will come in in the next month or so so keep your eye peeled. TK maxx are great for children's dresses so have a look there - or monsoon.

    Congratulations and welcome!

i can't be any help with the dress for your daughter (the only little girl for ours will be almost one and will be wearing purple), but as someone else said BHS is good for dresses for children at weddings.

How old is the bridesmaid? Adult or child? Are you also looking for a champagne/mink dress for her? The more we know the more help we can be! You may be best going to high street stores for the bridesmaid with a sorter time to plan - BHS, Debenhams, and Monsoon are all good, but often you have to look online - there are probably plenty of other places too).

As for the suit/kilt situation with your family - decide which you want, then tell people who say otherwise 'we thought about it, and decided on a suit to match his dad/a kilt because he will match the brides family'.

Speak to your fiancé and decide what is important for the two of you on the day and how you want it - make sure for those things you put your foot down (politely if you can - 'thanks for the suggestion, but we have decided on...'

You will get there and have a brilliant day, just let us know if there are things you need help with

Thanks everyone Smiley smile Think it's going to be an afternoon on the internet for my 9 year old and my adult bridesmaid - we went to a few proper wedding shops and they said they would only manage off the rack and we didn't see anything. Got one ordered from monsoon for the adult bridesmaid so fingers crossed!

Went in to town today to look at honeymoons - that looks like it's going to be easy enough to book Smiley smile

We are getting married 10th May Smiley smile

How old is your son? Could he decide what he would prefer to wear, then there should be no drama from either side?

A good suggestion Chippet but alas he is only 5 months and has more interest in eating his clothes than wearing them ha ha. I'm thinking I might have one on stand by as a spare set of clothes and possibly for a few pictures. I've still got a month before it really has to be ordered.

    Hi & welcome!

Youve already had some brilliant advice from others on here so there is not much I can help on.

High street is good for your daughters dress. Especially once the summer stuff starts coming in. Try H&M, Coast, debenhams, BHS etc.

There have been a few brides plan their weddings with the same timeframe as you on here & they had fantastic weddings!

I'm really looking forward to seeing your plans unfold.

If you get stuck along the way just shout. There's lots of suppliers on here who might be able to help you with short notice bookings & if they can't help, there are brides and grooms on here who I'm sure will also be able to suggest suppliers.

Congratulations Littlemrs. My sister got engaged on New Years Eve (10 years ago) and they got married on 7 March that year. I arranged most of the wedding. It was a bit frantic but totally doable. In some ways it made the decision making process easier as choices were limited and they didn't have months and months to second guess everything. I kinda wish my OH and I were doing it this way.

Would love to hear more about your plans x
