Newbie and winter wedding

goody51, 17 August, 2010 at 21:11 Posted on Planning 0 22

Hi, my OH and I got engaged two months ago and we are getting married on 5th Feb next year as we didn't want to wait and its so much cheaper! Everyone keeps telling me I will need a cape or shrug, something at least for the church to keep warm. Any suggestions, my dress is very plain? Also any theme suggestions? We are thinking winter wonderland (navy and silver are our colours). Thank you, just realised we only have 5 months so not very long really!

Hi goody, welcome to Hitched! I'm getting married a couple of weeks after you, and have just thought myself that I should get a shrug or something. I wont actually be spending much time outside on the day (getting married at the same place as reception), but think it would be nice to have one to make it feel more of a winter wedding (if you get me!). I'll follow your thread with interest ?

We're having an aubergine and pearl theme, but think navy and silver sounds a lovely idea x

Hellooooo - and welcome to Hitched. I'm a winter wedding too, January 29th 2011, so had the same issue about the cold. My bridal shop are making me a long sleeved bolero style jacket for the church in the same material as the corset of my dress. They can do different styles and shapes so you could perhaps speak to your shop about what they can do. Mine's going to have a mandarin collar and perhaps shaped cuffs. Our colour scheme is Ivory and Red. Hope you get some good ideas from all of us xx

    Welcome!

Winter weddings are so much fun to plan you can be really creative (not that you can't for a summer!).

If you were wanting a winter wonderland, think about ice blue as another option with the dark blue as an accent to add a bit of depth to things. The best centrepieces for a winter wonderland are sprayed branches in vases with cyrstals hanging from them. Also another cheap way to transform your reception venue to a winter wonderland is to use blue coloured lighting on the walls. Good luck and have fun with your planning!

I did a lovely winter wedding in December last year based on snowflakes. Here are a few pics of the flowers in Blue, White & Silver:

I'm new too and getting married the same day as lobbylou! We're having a teal wedding with lots of fairy lights at our reception. I haven't bought a shrug or jacket because I really want to show off my dress, I hope I'm not going to regret it!! x

Hi - I'm a winter bride too (21st December) and you're getting married on my Birthday next year! Good date choice!

I haven't picked anything to go with my dress yet, but I imagine I will find something, I'm not getting married in a church but would still like some outdoors pics - so will need to wrap up warm.

Thank you for all of the responses, so many winter weddings! Lots to think about and love the idea of incorporating snowflakes on the cake and table confetti, using fairy lights etc. Our flowers on the tables are included is part of our package so will check with the florist for suggestions, but she is not seeing us until October! I also think we'll have lots of tea lights and maybe put them on a mirror to reflect the light. I am going BM dress shopping on Saturday so think will have a look in Debenhams and House of Fraser for a cover up to get some ideas of what is available. Also going to get some big white umbrellas from ebay but no urgency with those xx

We're getting married in November and I'm going to have a pashmina style thing for when I'm in the car and waiting to go in the church. My MIL2B (who is also the Vicar!) is going to put the church heating on a couple of days before to make sure its nice and warm so dont think I'll need a wrap once I'm inside but def need one for the waiting around, photos etc. I'd really like it in bright purple to tie in with our colour scheme

I've just bought a bright purple brolly from earandrascalumbrellas.co.uk - they do all sorts of designs from plain to really fancy so you might want to have a look there for some ideas

Welcome to hitched by the way!

    Hi!

We're getting married on the same day!!!

I'm not getting married in a church but I'm still considering a shrug or cape. I think if you're planning on going outside for pictures or travelling between venues it would be a good idea.

I don't really know anyone to make one for me as I'd like one to match my colour scheme rather than an ivory one. I've been looking online on gothic websites!!! There's also a few good site for shrugs.

    Your colour theme sounds gorgeous!!

Hi and welcome, another fellow winter bride here!

I am also wearing a cape (see my avatar picture - that's a model by the way - I wish it was me LOL) and I ordered it online from a US site called Princess Tiaras (they also do lovely tiaras and other bridal wear). It's a lovely satin trimmed with faux fur. I am also wearing long satin gloves and boots. The cape is mainly for the pictures afterwards as I don't want goosebumps in the pics we are having outside, in the grounds of the stately home we are getting married at. But it has also another "function": as I am not wearing a veil, I will walk down the aisle wearing the cape and the hood on. instead of lifting my veil at the "altar", my OH will remove my hood to reveal my lovely tiara which is my "something borrowed" - my MOH wore it at her wedding last year.

Our colour scheme is white and Hunter Green with silver accents.

We're doing winter wonderland meets Narnia! Lots of fir, cones, and turkish delight LOL! Here's some snippets - any excuse to flash LOL:
