Offering really cheap stuff on Freecycle

Knownowt, 1 August, 2009 at 17:23 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 13

I was just about to post a couple of old Ikea standartd lamps in Freecycle when I looked them up on the Ikea site and found they only cost £3.99 each new.

Obviously it saves someone a trip to Ikea (priceless) but what would you think if you saw such a crappy offer on Freecyucle? I am too ashamed to offer them ?

I posted an Ikea chest of drawers that was only worth about £15 on Freecycle. Noone took it up so I posted in on fleabay and made a profit. People are odd.

It's got to be worth doing though. People put all kinds of cheap stuff on ours - old remote controls, printer paper etc.

Was going to suggest charity shop but they aren't allowed to take electrics are they?

I wouldnt think that was a cheap crappy offer, i think it would be someting that would be very appealing to someone who had nothing and was moving into their first home, or even someone who des car boots etc. Definately worth having for someone. Its not always how much they are worth financially but how much use they are to a person and I think in this instance it could be the latter

I think that some of the Social Workers in the authority I work for have started to use Freecycle for needy families. Those who really have nothing. They would certainly appreciate a £3.99 lamp.

I would put them on, they might be the perfect item that someone has been looking for. I've seen far cheaper items on freecycle than that. My SIL once offered a beer glass type thing that you freeze and it went in a flash.

Are they NOT lamps? Bloody useful they are - worth far more than 4 quid in my eyes, and well worth freecycling I'd say.

I have posted all sorts of crap on freecyle - things literally worth pennies - and I have about a 75% success rate overall. Even broken items go - there's a guy who always takes my broken electrical stuff off my hands, repiars it and passes it on to those in need (ie a £20 Tesco Value Freeview box, which didn't work). I have posted bags of envelopes, squashed boxes, really the most ridiculous stuff - esp things even the charity shop won't take. I figure if someone's broke or motivated enough to need it use it or sell it on, why the hell not. Keeps it out of landfill.

I once posted a personal stereo radio i'd won. it didn't have a CD or was digital anything, just the radio.

and someone nearly snapped my arm off. he collected them and seemingly this was a sought after model

    takes all sorts...

Thanks all. Have just posted them and noticed someone offering half a bottle of shampoo, so I now feel my lamps are quite a catch ?

Yep, they are NOT lamps. Ikea's prices on some things are amazing, I think- it's not the most glamorous stuff but it's perfectly servicable and so cheap!

OMG ? you are going to laugh at me then! I offered an open tin of black treacle after using 1 tbsp for a wedding cake and hate the stuff so knew I wouldn't use it..

Someone that bakes cakes locally took it and she seemed really grateful!

I hate throwing anything away which is a big problem as we are emigrating soon so need to move a whole house in a shipping container!

I've offered (and had snatched up!) a £4 bag of B&Q plaster, two bags of cotton wool (bought to make part of a halloween costume and I hate the stuff so would never have used it) worth about 99p and a pile of free CDs and DVDs that came free with Sunday papers (that my gran insists on saving for me).

I know how you feel though - i bought a load of cheap IKEA glasses for a party once and they got quite scratched in our dishwasher after only a short while. They were fine, just scratched but I wanted new ones - i felt daft posting them on Freecycle though as they're only £2 for 6 in IKEA for brand new unscratched ones, but a student who'd just moved into a flat was delighted with them. Weird.

I'd have paid these people to remive this crap from my house so it was a good deal for both parties!

Gargh, why do I keep trying with Freecycle?

I remember posting here before about no-shows and it's happened again- I waited in yesterday evening for some girl who seemed very keen and she didn't show (although sent an unapologetic email this morning to say she'd had to do something else). Either I'm extremely unlucky or the people in my local group are unusually rubbish. Anyway, am just going to bin them- this seems to happen every time and it annoys me so much.

I send sniffy emails to no-shows. I had two last week - one managed to turn up on the third attempt! The other never replied to apologise or rearrange. Both have gone into my "blacklist" folder and won't be given a chance to have my stuff again. Makes me feel better.
