Oh crap, I think my child has measles - any medics around please?

sian*, 7 February, 2009 at 10:31 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 14

And she is supposed to be flower girl next Sunday!

Do you think its worth calling NHS direct to see if I can get her looked at today or will she be ok if I see how she goes and leave it until Monday?

She is ok in herself, but has runny nose, watery eyes, temp and a rash which I have googled and looks like the pics coming up there. She has had all her jabs so what is the chance it is measles?

Edit to add - after I posted this Ihave just seen the other thread (not read it yet, just skimmed the OP), please dont think im being a stoopid or jumping on any bandwagons, I genuinely think she has it.

I would definitely be calling NHS Direct and asking to at least speak to a doctor. Measles is highly infectious so they may not want you to take her to a clinic, just in case it is that.

    Has she had MMR?

Ring your GP, or their Out of Hours service. Explainw hat you think it might be. When mine have been poxy, they've seen them in a side room.

    Firstly i'm not a medic

    secondly - poor thing

thirdly - I *think* measles is a notifiable illness. Might be worth ringing your out of hours doctor if you have one. I'm not sure NHS direct can make appointments for you.

In our area, it's NHS Direct who make all the out of hours appts and you can't be seen if you don't go through them.

I've no idea about the likelihood of immunised children getting measles so I won't speculate but I really hope it's not measles.

    Big hugs. ?

Firstly, there are lots and lots of kiddie illnesses that can cause fever and rash.

Did all the symptoms appear together today? Usually with measles you are unwell will fever and fluey symptoms for 5 days or so before the rash appears.

Yes, it could feasibly be measles, the vaccination is not 100% effective (OT: which is why we need more people to take it up, or you get outbreaks)

Anyway, I'd get her seen by a doc.

Symptom-wise the treatment for measles is the same as for all these kiddie viral illnesses: calpol, fluids and TLC.

    How old is she?

Well I called the out of hours and he doesnt seem to think it it measles as she isnt ill enough in herself, which obviously is good news.

    Thanks all though

    What JK says.

Poor thing - hope she doesn't feel too rotten. BTW for all our talking about scary stuff on that other thread, for the vast majority, measles is still relatively mild, especially if they've been vaccinated, so don't panic ?

OK I'm not a doctor and its a good idea for you to take her to see a doctor but a couple of months ago our 2 year old had all the symptoms you described then as her temp went down got a rash that looked exactly like pictures of measles.

We took her to OOD and he said it was a viral rash and very common.

Hopefully that's all it is for you

Sorry Zoay I dont know what Roseola is - shall Google.

To update my day - Little ones rash is getting worse and is spreading some patches are just big blotches now rather than spots. and my 13 year old has just come home from my brothers where she stayed last night and she has what look like chicken pox spots all over her tummy? WTF is going on in house of Sian*? Answers on a postcard please!

God I hope they are not both ill as eldest is CBM in this damn wedding next week and the bride is a little highly strung at the best of times to say the least!

Yes her rash is exactly like the images I got from googling Roseola. Is this bad or not?

Nothing to worry about as far as I can remember. I think it's a virus that gives high temp for a few days then you get this rash.

Here's the Wikipedia page on it - nothing scary or worrying.

Oh dear, I hope she doesn't have measles. ☹️ My little boly came down with measles yesterday and he isn't really that poorly in himself either. We had to go and see the out of hours doc as apparently the local authority has to be notified in cases of measles.

    Hope she's feeling better.
