One for footlong maybe?

Bittersweet, 3 October, 2012 at 10:25 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 32

Just a random pondering post.. How much did you weigh as a baby and how early/ late were you? How much did your OH/hubbys weigh and how much of a bearing do you think this has on determining a weight for your child? I was 9 weeks early weighing 3lb7oz ( now 6ft!) hubby was a week late weighing 7lb 4oz! I'm not pregnant, just wondered if there was amy actual factual research?

Gestational age will be the main factor in determining the birth weight of any child (who was growing at a normal rate). Um, because that's too obvious, are you actually asking something else? Not sure what your question is here.

Maternal factors and genetics can also influence baby weight to deviate from normal growth rates (certain genetic variants, smoking, maternal diabetes).

It was just a general musing really. I knew other factors contribute to a babys birth weight, guess it was a silly question really. Just pondering whether any studies showed over say one family to see the range in birth weights, whether they were relatively similar in relation to birth parents weight. Forget it, I'm clueless! Lol

I think she meant if she was a big baby, is she likely to have a big baby. Is there any correlation between the two.

I had a bloody massive baby! The midwife did say there was a link between the size of OH and I but it wasn't the only factor.

I was 2 weeks late and was 8lb 6oz. OH was a couple of days late and weighed 10lb.

Now, I'm 5ft 5' size 10, OH is 6ft and slim. I didn't have gestational diabetes, had a healthy diet while PG and didn't gain weight anywhere other than my baby bump. Sprog was born weighing 11lb 7.5oz! It depends on how you measure his due date as to whether he was late. Going by my dates he was born 1 day late, but by the scan dates he was 5 days late.

Ah I see. There IS a positive correlation between Mum's birth weight (more so than Dad's) and baby's birth weight. Adult size is important too - big women give birth to big babies.

I really hope there isn't much of a correlation! My OHs grandad was apparently a 14lb baby! ?

I've already said I'm not pushing him out if he's over 10lbs, he can use the sunroof!

I was fairly teeny at 5lbs-something so let's hope he takes after me. He does have a small head according to the 20-week scan.

My babies were all just over the 7lb mark. Perfect! I was about this weight too.

I'm quite tall (5'8") but my exH was only an inch taller than me - wonder if that reduced their size?

I was 8lb 12 and two weeks late.

My son was 7lb 15 and two weeks early.

My daughter was 6lb 12 and two weeks late.

I think my H was in the 7lb region.

I found the bigger baby easier to push out, anyone else found this?

Sprog was a sun-roof job, although many people have said that bigger babies are easier in terms of a normal delivery.

*Note the following statement is based purely on anecdotal evidence amongst my friends/acquaintances and not scientific research* Based in my friends/colleagues who've had babies in recent years, those who've had bigger babies have had an easier time - fewer tears etc. In fact, the two people who had smaller babies (6lb odd) suffered the most in terms of tearing. I also know someone who had a 12lb-er on gas and air only, with no cuts/tears etc.

I was 4lb 2oz and six weeks early. My brother was a few days late and he was around 8lb. Mum says she found his birth easier. Mostly because she wasn't prepared at all for going into labour six weeks early (maybe her own fault, she was up a ladder the day before putting up curtains and fell off) and she didn't feel her body was ready.

OH was about 6/7lb I think (need to go and have a look!) and a week early I think.

    Interesting!

Could this possibly be because second babies tend to be bigger, and second babies are travelling a path already travelled, as it were? Or is it big first babies vs small first babies?

Mine were bigger first baby and smaller second baby.

I think it's to do with a heavier weight and gravity. Also, my son had a big head and it was easier and I felt the ring of fire less with him than my smaller headed daughter.

Big babies rock. Matilda was 10lbs 11oz.

I was 7lbs something when I was born.

I think the theory is you labour like your mother but give birth to a child like the father. Rubbish for me. Mum had three and said it was like shelling peas. M come out 18 days late via the sunroof!

My Mum is short and was a size 12 when she had us. My brother was over 10lb and I was 9lb 4... I am very similar in looks to Mum, apart from my height (I am 5 foot 7). I guess the chances of me having a big baby are high? ☹️

This thread is making me wince.

Am I the only one who has no idea what my birth weight was? I doubt my parents even know, my dad struggles with the date, let alone the weight!

It had better be related to the Mum's birth weight. H was 10lb 4 and took 5 days to come out. I've told him he can have the baby if that happens to us. My 5ft friend had a 9lb 4 baby so that must have been due to the fact that he was late I presume?

Not necessarily. There is a correlation, it is not a perfect relationship. And late babies aren't necessarily bigger - some of them don't grow so well post-dates as the placenta kind of stops working so well.

There's not much you can do about it anyway, short of trying to be healthy and not get gestational diabetes, and if you do (because it's not just down to how healthy you are, there are genetic factors etc involved), trying to keep good control of it.

My sisters and I were between 7lb and 8lb

H and his brothers were between 10lb and 10 lb 5

Ella was 12 days late and 9lb 4; Leo was a few days before due date and 10lb 9oz

    I blame H.
