OT need some advice

yummymummy05, 24 May, 2010 at 20:14 Posted on Planning 0 7

Evening All,

I'll cut a long story short and get to the point. i'm currently suffering with a sore hand. I was playing cricket yesterday and got hit on the base of the thumb (just where it joins and becomes the wrist, if that makes sense). Its slightly swollen and sore to touch and move. I can move it kind of freely(ish) and bend my thumb but cant give a proper ''thumbs up'' or grip anything properly.

just wondered if i should be worried about it or just take some painkillers and shut the hell up! i dont fancy a trip to A&E if it turns out to be nothing. (i feel a hypercondriac or something now) ☹️

TIA

You may have staved it. Take a couple of tablets and shove some peas on it (or equivalent, i'm sure your thumb wont be adverse to any vegetable Smiley smile )

    sounds sore tho Smiley sad

I would go with teehee's advice, take some painkillers to take the edge off and try and get the swelling down. Hopefully it will have eased off a bit.

If it's broken it should become quite bruised and the pain won't let up. I broke my big toe a few years ago and I could still move it (well as much as you can mve your toe!) My whole toe and the side of my foot ended up black with bruising and when I wasn't taking pain killers it was the same constant pain, I only went to get it checked after a few days as it didn't seem to ease up.

    Thanks teehee,

i've ice on it and cold drinks (cans) on it today at work. the only problem i had today was that i didnt have any painkillers in my drawer at work so had to live with it today.

will see how it is tomorrow. i'm currently contemplating the walk-in centre if its no better by tomorrow evening

You may have fractured your thumb, I did it at volleyball a couple of years ago and although I could move it; it was very painful. I went to A&E and they gave my a splint to use to help me keep my thumb straight. You could also use a tuby (is that how it's spelt) grip or sports bandage. lots of painkillers as well though Smiley smile

    Hope it gets better soon.

As everyone else said take some painkiller rest and ice if it still hurts tommorrow or the day after id go to the local MIU and get it xrayed. there is a bone that connects your thumb to your wrist is called the Scaphoid its a tiny bone designed to break on impact. If you break this there is limited swelling or brusing and is an absolute *** to heal as its got no blood supply. So id take it easy and if its still hurting definately get it checked out.

Hey Cosmo, Try taking 2 x 200mg Ibuprofen tabs every 4 hours today, if that does not take down the swelling and it still hurts by this evening - say 8pm I would go up to A&E for an x- ray - it sounds to me like you may have hit a "very easy to break" joint rather hard and to be safe is better than to be sorry!

Ooo it sounds painful, i have broken my scaphoid bone, the thumb bit before and it hurts like hell, i waited three days before going the the A&E and now it is still achy in the cold weather (how old do i sound) and locks on occasion.

id go and get it checked out, just to be on the safe and less painful side

    Thanks Ladies,

The pain has eased off slightly and i can move it a bit more - although i still cant give a proper ''thumbs up''.
