O/T Those of you with cats......**updated with pics!!**

kj82, 26 May, 2010 at 23:44 Posted on Planning 1 21

Advice/experience greatly appreciated!!!

A friend of ours found a kitten and took it in. She had it all checked over etc but it didnt get along with her cat. She was getting desperate to get rid of it so we took it. We already have 2 cats. I brought it in tonight, isolated it in the bathroom but one of the cats has thrown a right paddy. Keeps growling and hissing at me. I'm going to start scent familiarisation with them for a few days and not let them have contact but do you think it will get better or was i being a bit naive???Vet has said kittens a boy and my other 2 are girls.

Help!!!

Im sure it would be fine, if it was me, i would just let them meet each other.... I have had loads of cats in the past and i have never segregated any of the new arrivals.
I had a white cat that was deaf and he hated the new kittens at first because they jumped on him and scared him because he couldnt hear them but they soon get the pecking order and everything was hunkey dory!

Introduce them and keep and eye on them... im sure they will be fine.x

I agree with Natty. Just let them meet each other and let them sort it out amongst each other. Aye, your older cats might go in a huff for a while, but they usually come around. HTH

Cats can be very difficult, introducing a new cat can take a week to a month you just have to be patient, if they start scrapping then keep them seporate when you are asleep or away until your cats are a little bit calmer. They will learn to get along.

when i introduced the 3rd cat, i tried keeping them seperate and scent transfer, but wasn't getting me anywhere, so put them together and let them get on with it, but stayed close enough to stop anything kicking off. New cat spent 3 days under our bed, but they soon sorted out the pecking order and get on great now.

hope everything works out ok, have you got a pic xx

It would be best to let them meet each other so they can start to bond. If they do start fighting or hissing, it's only natural and all part of them trying to assert themselves, especially the 2 cats you already have. we had a struggle when we introduced our 1 year old to his new 6 month old friend. As first your own cats will be a bit put out that you have brought another kitten in, but it won't take long before they are the best of friends.

Hope it all goes well for you! Smiley smile

Just the same to say as everyone else really.

We've had cats for years, all from kittens, and we've never introduced gradually. Yes they will hiss and growl at each other to start with but like the others have said once the pecking order has been sorted they'll be fine.

I'm thinking of getting a puppy when we move out after the wedding so that should be fun introducing to my cats, lol!

    xx

When ive introduced my new cat to my olds cats i just left them both to it as this was easier thn keeping thewm apart has long has they could have somewhere to go to get away from each other if needed, but it will take anything from 1day to 2weeks, but they just need to fdind where they all stand and let the kitten know whos in charge, HTH X

I get what people say about separating them and scent familiarisation but we them get on with it. We've got 5 cats aged between 2 and 16 now and all the kittens have been let out at the deep end when they have arrived lol. i think it helps them either toughen up or learn the hierarchy of things! For the record in our house - Grandma is boss. The 9yo and the baby are the hunters. Bengal Cross (5yo) is the vocal princess and Ragdoll (6yo) is the soppy walking ball of fluff.

It should be fine, Our Male Cat Rambo was almost a year when we brought Bailey home. We didn't seperate them. He hissed constantly for Months, and nipped her a few times, they still do occasionally infact but as she's tiny (she was 4 weeks old when we bought her from a Pet shop, Mal-nourished and had fleas, SSPCA done nothing to the shop we got her from much to my frustration!!) and very nervous, as she didn't get the training from her mother she would have got had she been with her till 8 weeks, but he does protect her when she's cowering behind the bed when we have people in!lol

They will eventually get used to each other and get along fine.

    LxXx

Do you have any other pets in the house? We had a problem like that and we thought it was because our older cat was bullying him (as much as he can do, they're both really soft!!) But it can also be if they can't get access to a litter tray, or if ithe tray is dirty or if it is not in a private place for them. Cats are very proud and don't like people seeing them on the loo!!

Talking about cat pee, my cat went through a phase of peeing on my leather sofa in exactly the same spot, in between the cushions ? I could have cried, in fact I did on one occasion from frustration.

Hasnt done it for a while tho, touch wood, cant afford a new sofa atm for obvious reasons, so put the cushion covers in the washing machine then on the line and they come up perfect every time.

H2B would get rid of our cat in an instant, but me and the kids love her to bits and would rather he went first lol!!
