Paris

Sparkly Tyke, 2 July, 2012 at 11:38 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 22

H and I are going to Paris next month for a few days, just wondered if anyone would care to share any hints and tips they might have?

We've both been before, H was barely a teenager though and I had a measly one day in Paris last year so basically saw and did nothing - well, I stood underneath the Eiffel Tower and bought an ice cream and that was about it.

I've done a bit of Googling and reading through travel guides but any words of wisdom from Hitchers would be most welcome! We're going to Disney one day so we've got that sorted, we just need to fill the other days and more importantly, the evenings.

Thanks in advance ?

Go up the tower, go to the Moulin Rouge, walk down the Champes Elysee (sp) and look at all the wonderful shops, buy a croissant, buy loads of croissants, go to the Louvre, travel everywhere on the metro - double decker trains...yes please! Don't forget to try snails in garlic butter, there is a lovely cafe near the Moulin Rouge that cooks them wonderfully!

? I think I'll give this part a miss, but the rest sounds great! I was so impressed with the double decker trains last year actually - but I am easily impressed!

Do you like mussels? If so, you need to try them!

I love the Metro!! It's awesome. Notre Dame is definitely worth seeing and Moulin Rouge. Lots on nice places to eat around both of them. We went to a cafe on the opposite side of the river to Notre Dame, overlooking it and it was lovely.

? can't stand them so I'll say it's a safe bet I wouldn't like snails either! I'm not hugely adventurous with food, especially if I have to pay for it - I'm much happier about trying weird and wonderful things when I'm on an all inclusive holiday!

PP - duly noted! I did sort of see Notre Dame but from a distance last year after an epic walk from Gare du Nord down to the Seine (soooo not my idea and I did try to tell them it would be a long way, especially in a heatwave!) but I'd love to see it up close so will definitely plan to visit it.

Sacre Coeur and Montmartre for artiness and little cafes to sit in and watch the world go by.

Hire a bike from the Velib scheme and cycle the city centre. It's the best way to see Paris! As long as you dock the bike every 30 minutes (there are docking stations every 300m or so in the city centre) then it only costs a euro a day!

From the Sacre Coeur, go down the steps to Abbesses. Very lovely and nice little cafes.

    Enjoy!!

We went for a day in 2010, we travelled on the Metro, which i loved and would recommend to anyone! We did the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame Cathedral, wandered by the water looking at all the boats, went to Les Halles, a cute little park/water feature bit which we picked at random on our Metro map and had lunch here. It was such a nice day.

I can recommend Angelina's near the Louvre if you have a very sweet tooth. Their hot choc and pastries are divine x

Yup yup, I always feel this is the most 'French' part of Paris. I love getting a coffee and people watching, seeing the artists on the square creating their work. Even though it is so busy and bustling, I always feel really peaceful there.

I enjoyed a boat tour along the Seine when the weather was good, see the Pompidou centre, see the Louvre or Musee D'Orsay, go further out and take a horse-drawn carriage ride from Versailles to the Queen's secret estate. Visit the graves of famous people such as Oscar Wilde at Pere Lachase cemetery

The Tour Montparnasse is great for views and far less queuing time that the Eiffel Tower. Also for romance, go to the Trocadero viewing point and watch the Eiffel Tower sparkle on the house at night.

For set menus and cheapy food wander the winding back streets of the Latin Quarter, not far from Notre Dame, but don't eat close to any main tourist attractions if you are watching the pennies.

Walk to the Arc D'Triomphe under the subway at the end of the Champs Elysee, and see the Eternal Flame, then go up the hundreds of stone stairs and look down at the crazy 10 exit roundabout and be thankful you aren't driving!

See the famous club where Picasso is rumoured to have drink, Le Lapin near Sacre Coer, hop on a Metro, get off at a random place and just wander the streets looking at the gorgeous buildings.

I'm so noting these ideas for my 3 day trip at the end of the month! 4 weeks tomorrow!

I looked at the Moulin Rouge as anniversary present to husband, but couldn't justify the cost, and I'm a bit prudish about girls dancing with boobs out if watching with him!

Loads of ideas - thanks ladies!! Ice cream is definitely more my style so will be keeping an eye out for that. Stripey one the bikes have got me torn, I love the idea but I haven't ridden a bike since I was 12 ? I have looked into it though and there's a station just up the road from our hotel so I'll keep it in mind!

Haha! You know that phrase, 'Just like riding a bike'... Well!! You'll be fine, and if the weather is good it really is a fab way to see the city, promise.

The bit the worries me is I was never too great at it, I had a heck of a lot of accidents on bikes which is why I stopped bothering! ? Although looking back now, as kids I think we thought we were invincible and I'd never dare try riding where we used to so I was probably asking for it!

I wasn't a massive fan of Paris but I think that's because we struggled to find our way around and stopped in the wrong place too close to the Eiffer Tower which was just full of conmen.

As others have said, climbing the Eiffel Tower is a must. I hate heights and was determined I wasn't going all the way up but I did as thought I would never do it again. Notre Dame is worth seeing, we went on the River Cruise too which was good as well and it's also where OH proposed Smiley smile

If you have time I'd highly recommend a day trip to Versailles to see the palace, it's absolutely beautiful!

Here are a few "off the beaten track" things which were recommended to me.

We went to a beaufiful restaurant called le petit cours - it was amazing!

Georges (restaurant) in Centre Pompidou - very trendy and a great location but the food was expensive and not that special - all of the waitresses were at least 6ft tall - scary!

Colette (world's most trendy shop) on Rue St Honore -
    http://www.colette.fr/

La Duree (restaurant and macaroon tea rooms) on Champs Elysees -
    Napoleonic interior -

Cafe Le Flores (famous classical French cafe) -
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caf%C3%A9_de_Flore

Cafe Les Deux Magots (same as above and about 3-4 doors down - both very iconic) - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Les_Deux_Magots -
We went here for lunch and it was nice

Fauchon (very cool delicatessen...not your normal deli...like harrods but
more stylish and worth the visit...good for cool gifts) in Place Madeleine -
great shop - nice restaurant there too and good cafe for all different sorts of eclairs!

Hotel Costes (one of Paris' most trendy hotels...good for an evening drink
with gal-dem Julie dem) on Rue St Honore -
very nice! Went for one drink - looked like a nice restaurant there too

Spend some time walking down Rue St Honore (Paris' equivalent of Bond St)

VIP Room - Paris' best club - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Wa8QF8gqCQ

Maison Troisgros - amazing 3 michelin starred restaurant (but quite
    pretentious and super expensive) -

Pinky I can understand that, the one day I had there last year was pretty much awful and left me thinking Paris was overrated, but now that I've sat down and researched a bit I'm actually really excited about it - plus, I get to call the shots this time ?

I'd love to go to Versailles Kriek, it would be lovely to squeeze it in but I think it's possibly a bit ambitious as we only have one full day really.

Thanks for all those links Jules, I'll make a note! Places to eat and drink are great, we'd probably end up in Maccy D's knowing us which would be a bit poor really!

No worries at all! We'd been to Paris a couple of times so had done the usual tousisy things and asked a friend who works with a lady from Paris for recommendations - we thought it was nice to do some more "local" things - rather than the equivalent of coming to London and eating in an Aberdeen Angus on Picadilly Circus!
