QQ MOTs - sorry dull

R-A, 17 October, 2008 at 14:28 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

Sorry, tried googling and direct.gov.uk but couldn't find the answer.

Is it legal to keep a car parked on the road if it isn't MOTd? Mine is due today but for financial reasons I'd rather wait until next month to get the MOT. I wouldn't drive it but it'd be parked on a public road. Is that legal?

PS tried to post this before but Hitched ate it so sorry if this a double post

I think it just needs to be taxed, but I am half guessing

I think it just needs to be taxed too.

However you must make an appointment at the MOT station and get some sort of appt card from them ,as you will have to drive it with no MOT to the station. You are only covered for the direct route the MOT station, no stopping at the shop/bank on the way!..

Thanks. That was my gut instinct but I can't find it written anywhere.

No issues with the trip to the garage - it's literally 50 yrs from our flat!

Dont have a clue but would you need to tell your insurance company because surely your car is only insured with a valid MOT

Better to be safe than sorry!

It may be worth checking your insurance though...some insist you keep the car 'road worthy', so if it was stolen/hit by another car before the MOT they may try and wriggle out of your claim

edited to add...or even if the policy doesn't automatically become invalid without the MOT, if anything did happen to the car, that lack of MOT could lower the valuation and therefore the payout

    Thanks all.

I hadn't thought about the insurance side of things, however as it's only worth scrap value (1993 Fiesta) I think I may chance it for the weekend at least. It's been battered about as much as it can be already!

I didn't think that your tax is valid unless you have insurance and mot? (Irrespective of the tax actually being paid.) I'm pretty sure the insurance isn't valid without a valid MOT.

However, I'd be surprised if it was noticed. I don't have any particular professional experience or knowledge on this, but all my personal experience has been their systems are absolutely garbage.

Are there any issues getting your MOT re-registered if it has lapsed?

Just asked around - we believe you can keep it on the road, but can't drive it, and it may invalidate your insurance.

Whilst this may not be a problem for you and the cars value, you may need legal representation, should there be issues from the person who hit you.

    I recommend you

    a) Phone your local police station and confirm the above (I would phone my colleagues in traffic, but they aren't in!)

    b) Check what this means for your insurance
