Questions about dresses.

Yotobari, 13 August, 2011 at 18:21 Posted on Planning 0 16

Hello. I've got a few questions to ask you all in regards to dresses.

Firstly, did any of you buy your dress without trying it on? I was looking yesterday and the sales lady held a dress up to me as it wasn't in my size and I was speechless. OH hated it but I loved it, it had a great big swishy skirt which I never saw myself trying on but it was just so lovely. Trouble is as I'm a very large lady I'm worried that the skirt will make me look frumpy and don't think I'll know for sure unless I try on one with a similar skirt.

Also do you know of any dress shops in the Manchester area which have a large selection of plus size dresses to try? I went to Pronuptia yesterday and tried on three dresses there but none of them made me feel absolutely wow and I'd like to be able to try on a bigger variety of dresses.

Thanks in advance.

    Hiya

welcome to Hitched! I bought my dress without seeing it in the flesh as it were- only saw pictures online.

I know there are specific dress shops that stock bigger sizes- sounds silly but have you googled it?

I cant help you with the shops as i live in birmingham but i dont think i would buy a dress without trying it on. What about going through your local directory and just calling all the shops and checking what they have in stock? Did you take your h2b dress shopping with you?

Yes, I did take him with me. Can't be doing with the hiding the dress faff, we live in one tiny room so he'd end up seeing it anyway. I have had a google and got a few results but I was really hoping someone would be able to tell me whether they have a good selection. Pronuptia said they did have dresses in my size and they did, but only about four and they were all fairly similar.

I also bought a dress without seeing it first, but if I didn't like it, I would only have lost £7 delivery as it was free return... personally if I was going to lose much more than that I wouldn't. Many others on here have said how the dress they loved the look of, turned out to look bad when they tried it on. In your case, I would try some on to know what shape suits you

Again, I can fully recommend Elderberry Brides in Basingstoke (as have others before me, it would seem). I know it's a trek but they easily had 40 or 50 dresses in sizes upwards of a 20 and the ladies in there are lovely

Thank you very much for all your suggestions. Looks like I've got a bit of a treck in for me with no car Smiley laugh Through more extensive searching I have managed to find a shop which specialises in plus size bridalwear near Harrogate. http://www.curvybridal.co.uk/ in case anyone else wants to take a look.

If you are willing to travel a bit I would thoroughly recommend The Big Day in Castleford. I literally went to every plus size shop withing 100 miles before I went there (it is 6 hours from me and was definately worth the journey ) They have an amazing choice all in plus sizes up to 32 including Ian Stuart and Justin Alexander (and lots of others Sonsie, Ronald Joyce)

PM me if you want more details. Hope that helps.

I would always say try your dresses on!

I fell in love with a dress about four years ago and it is an Alfred Angelo classic so they still do it now, I always had the dress in my head as the one but then when I went dress shopping last month I tried the dress on and although it was beautiful, it weighed a tonne and I looked hideous in it! The weight of it put me off as I will be in my dress so many hours I want to be as comfortable as possible.

So if you can please try your dress on!! Smiley smile

I went to the wedding dress outlet at Hornsea Freeport. They had at least 30 dress sizes 18-30. Even if they dont have THE dress, you would be able to try on different styles to give you more of an idea of what you like?

That was my intention and I tried a dress on to see if I liked a dress with "shoulders" and that was it BAM was my dress - totally different from all the others I had seen pics of and thought was the style I wanted. In fact its RED! and at £495 was one of the dearest in the outlet!

Also from one plus sized bride to another my dress is from the Sonsie range by Veromia, and OMG! because they are a specially made plus size range the internal corsetry etc on them is amazing and gives a beautiful shape!

I would say definately try some on first as I am sure many of the B2b's on here (me included) will say what they "thought" they wanted turned out to be completly different to what they fell in love with
