Quick question re Wedding Insurance

overtherainbow, 24 February, 2010 at 05:48 Posted on Planning 0 6

Can anyone let me know if you have to buy wedding insurance before you actually start booking and paying deposits for things or can you just buy it whenever? We will be paying the deposit for our daughter's venue in the next couple of weeks (hopefully! when they finally decide which venue to choose!) so we weren't sure if you've already paid for things before you take out the insurance if they are covered or not? Also, does anyone have any recommendations? All this is new territory for us as wedding insurance wasn't invented when we got married!

Thanks in advance - Brenda

Hi Brenda - I went for Debenhams too - it just seemed to cover me best for what I wanted. I've also heard ecclesiastical recommended. I'd say get it as soon as you pay any deposits.

As far as I know you can buy it whenever but obviously if something goes pear-shaped before you get it it won't be covered so I'd go for sooner rather than later, although most won't let you buy more than 2 years before the wedding (not sure what dates your daughter is hoping for). We used E&L (Entertainment and Leisure) as they had a very good deal that seemed to do what we wanted and they were also recommended by a friend. It was also very easy and we bought online, got an instant "you are now covered" e-mail and got the paperwork through a couple of days later. Can't really give you a full recommendation as we never had any cause to claim on it!

I'm with E&L. We got ours when we started to spend too much money to lose! I would say get it asap, i think they cover you for 2 years.

As mentioned before, get it as soon as possible, before booking anything, if you can. Make sure the inurer is regulated by the FSA (Financial Services Authority) and check out the terms and conditons (exclusions, and limits, etc).

Debenhams are good however do watch the t&c's.My dress company went bust last summer with my dress and all our money. She was classed as a sole trader and didnt go bankrupt herself for 8 months. The policy only covers companies who go into liquidation or bankruptcy but not if a store just ceases trading ie does a runner.I am still in the middle of a claim!

Also on the claim form it asks things like when did you book ceremony and when did you take out the insurance so they may question you if you dont take out the cover for yonks after you've booked everything.Ours was only about a week apart. So like others have said get cover taken out asap x
