I can only speak from experience on 2 of them.

Fuertaventura - lovely island but the part I was in seemed half finished which was bit weird, so make sure you are within an established resort.

Tenerife - we went in feb and it was fairly cloudy, still lovely but turned out we were in the wrong part of the island, we were in the north, the sun was mostly down in playa americas area - we even considered moving hotels!

Lanzerote - OH and his family used to go here every new years and everything I hear about the weather from them is fine, in the pictures they always look suntanned!!

None. Fly another 45mins south and go to the Cape Verde Islands instead.

Depends on which island you choose but they are under developed so you'd be experiencing real Cape Verde before the tourist boom hits in the coming years. We stayed on Sal and went quad biking around the island, fishing with the locals, had dinner in the most amazing little shack with the locals, the beach at Santa Maria was as beautiful as any I've seen in the Caribbean (and that's a few!) and it's the wind surfing capital apparently.

Another vote for Los Cristianos in Tenerife. Walking distance from Playa De Las Americas if that's your scene, but has a nicer vibe IMO.

Only been to Tenerife when I was about 10 and before Playa De Las Americas became the neon paradise that it is now!!! North of the island is colder and windy!

To be honest, I think they are all very similar!

I've only been to Lanzarote and it was fine. Nice & warm, beach was good and plenty of restaurants and bars.

My mum's been to Gran Canaria and I think that's meant to be a bit hillier isn't it?

Lanzarote. Very interesting scenery, home to the only National Park in the Canaries (a volcanic one that looks like the Moon), very beautiful artist trail courtesy of Cesar Manrique (which can occupy you for days*). We stayed in Costa Teguise, in cheapo apartments called the Galleon Playa (I think). It's a relatively new resort so lots of glass-fronted restaurants and bars. We visited Playa Blanca for the day - that's all promenade, marina and Ralph Lauren shops, backed by your standard holiday resort. The Carmen place (Playa del Carmen, Puerta del Carmen?) looked dreadful - think Benidorm.

Google Jameos del Agua, Mirador del Rio, Jardin de Cactus, to see if it's your thing.

Tenerife is like this up by Mount Teide... you can get a cable car up to the top!

Went to Gran Canaria and absolutely hated it. Should have gone to Italy but they cancelled the flights last minute. The hotel was falling down and full of fat, hairy, rude Germans! Plus I was made to share a room with my Grandmother! So it was doomed from the start!

We stayed in Taurito (south cost). Playa de Mogan looked like a pretty little town. Did do a fab tour in a minibus that took us right into the centre of the island and saw the proper island not the commercialised one.

We also did a day trip by hovercraft I think to Tenerife to visit a zoo type place Loro Parque - it was a great place and I remember thinking Tenerife looked nicer than Gran Canaria. There was a zoo type place on Gran Canaria that we went to afterwards but it was awful - the animals looked skany and unloved.

I think it depends on what kind of thing you're looking for and what you like to do on holiday.
