Recommend your I-pod dock please!

Hi there,

You all seem like a clued-up bunch here on Hitched, so I was hoping to pick your brains - technology purchases aren't always my area of expertise, i never know where to start!

I'm looking to spend £100-£200 [ideally closer to £100, but would stretch budget for something really special]. I like the ipod docks which are one single unit, as opposed to a unit with separate speakers. I'd like it to charge, and play from my ipod through speakers. Oh, and i'd like it to look vaguely nice - no massive black monstrosity with loads of cables please! Obviously, the more high quality the sound quality the better.

Would very much appreciate any recommendations. Thanks so much in advance ?

H bought this one a while back:

    https://www.johnlewis.com/b26w-zeppelin-ipod-speaker/p230644976

which is stupidly expensive, but fantastic quality, and looks fab. However, we were barely using it so sold in on e*bay a month or so ago, and got most of our money back. But if you want one that's very special, this one fits that criterium, if not the price.

Do you want it to just sit in the house or for travel too?

We have the BOSE dock for the house which is fab sound https://www.johnlewis.com/ (but a really old one in white)

and an Altec Lansing inMotion one for travel that works really well too (also in the garden - takes batteries or mains)

Sorry just realised how old mine must be as the models have all be superseded by newer models!

I love my Altec Lansing IM600 (?) which got amazing reviews. Although it is biggish, the stand folds in to be portable.....bit smaller than A5 notebook.

It also has a radio which is pretty useful too.

Thanks very much for your replies - they are both gorgeous but I wonder if i can bust the budget that much? May have to discuss with H, and I suspect he'll be in favour!

We want it for use in the house only, so I guess it's worth treating it as an investment....she says, justifying it to herself... ?

We have 2 Altec Lansing ones, the IM 600 (which was great when we bought it but now we both have iphones, it is only used with the nano as it does not charge the iphones) and the im710 (I think... its 7-something) which we use with the iphones. I think the 600 is obsolete and replaed byt he 700 series anyway.

Its one of the cheaper ones on the market $140-ish in the US so i am guessing around 100 quid in the UK.

The sound quality is great. H used to design loudspeakers and works in the audio test industry.... he's very picky about sound quality and he thought this was much better for your money than the Bose or any of the other ones. We love it.

I've got this one - https://www.amazon.co.uk/GEAR4-StreetParty-size-speaker-system/dp/B000ULTI3E/ref=pd_cp_ce_2 very much at the cheaper end, but small, works well, and packs flat for travelling (can use batteries or mains)
