Recommendations needed!

My OH's birthday is next Friday - just over a week before the wedding. I really want him to have a great day - and for it not to be overshadowed by what's happening the following week! Anyway - we aren't that far from London, so thought we could go for an afternoon out (found a brewery tour I think he'll love), followed by dinner and drinks before getting the train home.

Now - we've not been back in England long, so I barely know this area, let alone London - so I'm looking for restaurant suggestions! I know I could google it but thought I would pick all your brains first! He likes all food (!) so Thai, Indian, Chinese (how do you know which one in Chinatown is good?), or steak - let me know your thoughts!

Thanks!

Harbour City (46 Gerrard St London W1D 5QH - 020 7439 7859) on the corner in China Town is the best we have eaten in and De Hems is a fab dutch bar round the corner. Used to work that way and it was our treat of choice.

Bodeans is an american rib place which oh has been to and really likes in covent garden.

Thanks Doodles! Will check them out online - like the idea of a Dutch bar!

No worries, I think De Hems do food but i've never eaten there. You might want to book a table tho - it gets busy in the evenings - its popular lol.

What's your budget? i like yauatcha in soho, and j sheekey in covent garden. otherwise, i would go onto toptable.com - lots of good deals on there for celeb chef type places.

It was fab! We went to Manchester - stayed in a gorgeous apartment in the centre - all wooden floors and exposed brickwork - was lovely. One of the hens is a chef so she cooked dinner on the Friday night, we stayed in and they had done little games etc for me (quizzes about OH etc.). My CBM had done gorgeous little customised canvas bags for everyone that had fun name badges, long cigarette holders, willy straws (yuck!), feather boas, and 20's themed headpieces... I started to get the idea of the theme then!

On the Saturday morning we went for a Charleston dance lesson (like one of the routines in Chicago), then lunch & cocktails, some shopping, yummy afternoon tea. Saturday night all of us dressed up as 1920's flappers - they had even arranged a very glam dress for me! More cocktails, dinner and dancing followed!

Only bad thing was that my CBM had a really bad head cold and sinus infection and I lost my voice when I woke up on Saturday - then felt worse as the day went on! Tried to ignore it - but definitely didn't drink much.

One of the lovliest things was they had arranged for my aunt, who I am really close to as she's only 10 years older than me, to come as a complete surprise! I was sent to answer the doorbell - and was dreading finding a stripper (which I had made them promise not to do) and there she was!

You are sweet for remembering NL - thanks for asking! (and sorry for rambling on!)

Not too fussed about budget - just want him to have a lovely wedding-free day!

I've used top table before - just wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions that they had been to recently. Is yauatcha Japanese? (sorry if that's a stupid question!)

I recommend HK Diner - it's the best place I've eaten in around the China Town area. Doesn't look much but is very tasty.

For excellent steak I'd recommend Hawsmoor. Great wine list. Gaucho Grill is worth a look and there are several around London. (I'm salivating at the thought of their malbec!)

If you know where abouts in London you'll be I can give you some more suggestions.

Thanks CB. He is a big fan of red wine and steak!

We can be anywhere in London - we can get a train home from either London Bridge or Victoria - so central would be ideal.

Http://www.gauchorestaurants.co.uk/restaurants/ They aren't the cheapest but I guarantee you a great meal. The chips are awesome and the bernaise sauce is perfect.

Also, as you seem very nice, I shall let you into a secret. This place is awesome for a drink before dinner. It gets busy but it's a really quirky place. Ideal if you want to wander around Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square etc. Don't tell everyone though, it really is a hidden gem!

I second this - very good atmosphere. I'd walked past it without noticing it so many times before I went in Smiley smile

of course! hawksmoor is EXCELLENT. we went to the new one in covent garden last november not long after it had opened and it had the best steak EVER. *loved loved loved* it. they tell you which cut of steak and the weights that they have, and you choose from there.

and yes, sorry, yauatacha is japanese. i would probably go to hawksmoor or j sheekey again over yauatcha though.
