General wedding etiquette frowns upon email for any part of your wedding invitation or responses, but if you think that your guests are fine with it then there's no real reason why you shouldn't.

The only thought is what are you going to do about elderly relatives etc that don't have email addresses?

Hmm, thats what I was thinking.

However, the only people we do not have email addresses for are my grandparents, and they know they'll be coming !!!

The save the date idea, has only come about from the website, thinking of just sending the link with a save the date subject field.

Its more for the guys that need to book flights, so they can take advantage and book cheaper with Easyjet etc. So we thought why not just send it out to all of our day guests, so they can arrange booking the day off work (Our wedding is on a Friday).

    Decisions, decisions hey !

When is your wedding date? We didn't bother with std's and just sent out the invites out early so people can do the cheap deals like you mention.

Any non-saturday wedding I'd say it's essential to get the stuff out early because a lot of people may not be able to get the time off work if it's left too late.

Providing you've let everyone know with an STD, then I'd say probably April - the standard sort of time period for invitations - is ok to send the proper formal invites.

However, I don't like the 2-3 months before idea as at that time you've got more than enough to sort out without chasing rsvp's and stuff - so we sent ours out some months ahead of that. I did get a bit of flak here for being "too organised" but people did seem to appreciate it - plus as responses came in it gave us a chance to put together a 'B list' to invite some more people that, if we'd only done it at 2 months we wouldn't have been able to do.

Basically stuff etiquette/tradition, you know your guests well enough to know what works best for them Smiley smile

Thanks AJ - appreciate your help !

I make you right with the whole, do what feels right for you two comments, as you say we "should" know our guests !!

We'll send out the email with the link to our website with the date and flight and accommodation details on, and then send invites next year !

    Thanks again !

AN all male thread so far, who'd of thought it on a Monday morning on a wedding forum !!!!!!

They're probably all busy watching Jeremy Kyle or something.

The link with the website is most useful, as you can obviously only fit so much on an std; so elaborating on travel and hotel options there will work. I know our guests appreciated all the information we provided for them.

The other thing of course to bear in mind is how far people are travelling - with a few exceptions most of our guests had a 2 hour trip to get to our big day so quite a few chose to stay over, and most had no clue where the venue was either. Our hotel was on a 4 mile long B road with few landmarks to indicate progress, and the postcode didn't exist on some satnavs.

Orrrrr maybe they're working/planning a wedding/bringing up children (delete as necessary)

As it's on a Friday I'd definitely suggest a STD. Don't think it really matters how you do it though, if everyone has email you might as well save yourself the cost of getting magnets made!

We sent e-mail save the dates to all our friends, and our parents called our relatives to let them know the date. I've never actually received a physical STD card for any of the weddings I've been to - either e-mail or just been told when it is.

We didn't bother with save the dates. We just sent our actual invites about 6 months before the wedding.

I think email is fine for that purpose though so go for it.
