Say Cheese ?

MrsMac2be, 23 October, 2011 at 14:55 Posted on Planning 0 24

OH and I have just come back from a wedding fayre at the East of England showground, it was rather good there too.. anyway, we spoke to an exhibitor who does cakes made out of cheese to which my OH expressed a real interest in..

We were thinking of having this, together with various chutneys, biscuits etc for the evening, however, we get married at 2.30pm, so probably wont be having the wedding breakfast until 5pm ish, then the chocolate fountain/cake etc will the cheese go to waste or will the guests appreciate having a little something to nibble on during the evening? Maybe during when the band takes their break?

Any thoughts?

Yeah but didnt she have it instead of the "normal" cake?

We're thinking of having it as well as the traditional/normal cake but for the evening nibbles?!

wasnt reading properly sorry. Oh so you are having a cheese cake as well as a "normal" cake? I am sure it would get eaten once people have had a few but why not just have cheese instead of "normal"?

We're having a 'cheese' cake as well as a 'traditional' cake (well a cup cake tower topped with a fruit cake) I'm sure none of it will go to waste! Who can resist cheese and bix? We're having the wedding breakfast about 5 and will cut the 'cakes' when evening guests arrive so all can enjoy, along with the evening hog roast and chip butties! I'd rather people have too much food than not enough.. sounds good to me!

We had a cheese cake and we never had a 'normal cake' To be honest the was WAY too much cheese! I took alot of it home and still threw loads away. Everyone liked it and everyone I have spoke to said they ate some but I think if I did it over again I would have both. Just so the guests had something to take away with them. I don't think anyone wanted to take a bit of cheese.

Putting myself in a guests shoes.... There is always time for cheese ?

I adore choccies etc but after a few drinks I am always more likely to opt for cheese as it goes better with the booze IMO.

Bespoke Tailor - my goodness I can't believe it wasn't eaten. Me and H would have just sat there in the bridal suite scoffing our faces!

Me! I can't stand the stuff or the smell! I know I'm in the minority though as lots of people do like it. They do look really good.

KBS, we're doing this. We aren't eating til late-ish and won't be having any additional evening guests so we're just going to have a cheeseboard for our evening food - lots of cheese, biscuits, grapes, celery etc. Hopefully that will be enough for people - if it doesn't all get eaten it definitely won't be going to waste - I'll have it!

I've costed my cheese tower and I think it'll be around 150 as I'm doing it myself... whereas the cake is 320! But I wouldn't just serve cheese although it would be my preference everytime I know how much people looove the cake!

I went to a wedding where they had a cheese "cake" instead of normal, and it was delish. It would have all been eaten I'm sure, but the caterer only cut up about a 1/4 of the cheese, and they said it was finished. We then found the other 3/4 in the fridge at the venue the next day, as they'd been too lazy to cut the rest up. ?

I'd say have a normal professional cake then perhaps source your own cheese. It's only rounds of cheese stacked up, and IMO prices charged for them are stupid for what you actually get. If you have access to a cash and carry or the like sure you could pick up full rounds of cheese, or even wholesale from a deli etc.

KBS - I'm doing this at our home party. We're having a hog roast and no plated dessert as such, so we're having a dessert/sweet buffet (mini cupcakes, cookies as well as sweets) and also a cheese tower for those who prefer cheese. I think we'll put it out after the hog roast has been cleared away and leave it out for people to nibble on all evening.

I am anticipating a lot of waste, but we'll give some to friends and family to take home. There's nowhere local to me that does the actual cakes, but I'm planning on going to our local deli and seeing if we can just order some different sized wheels. I'm sure it'll work out cheaper. We'll put out crackers, oatcakes, chutneys, grapes etc and perhaps even some pate.

    Do it!

Once we'd cut ours, the venue took it away to plate up some for us to have with our family back at the house and the bulk of the rest was put out on to fabulous personalised olive wood cheese boards my dad made for us.

All 11kg of cheese went! Serving it with 10 bottles of port helped (a bottle per cheeseboard!). Crackers, chutneys etc all served in lieu of a buffet (we ate dinner quite late).

I'd recommend Ian at The Cheese Shed. Drop him an email and he will put together different combinations for you and then arrange for them to be sent to you or your venue so that they are ripen as per the requirements of each cheese.

My dad made it for us and my mum painted it.

One day it's going to adorn the wall in the cheese room I'm planning in our epic kitchen.

We're also eating late - 6pm - full on three course meal but we're then having a large cheese board wtih all the trimings plus mini Cornish pasties (as we're getting married in Cornwall!) At about 10pm. We're not having any evening guests but I know what people are like and I'm pretty confident they'll scoff the lot. If the cheese doesn't all go we've got another party the next day so we can get it out again then.

I know you don't want to waste food or money but I've been a guest at a wedding before where I was STARVING in the evening and there was no food. Quite often from my experience at a wedding at the main meal quite often you don't always eat everything as you're chatting and drinking.

More food the better in my opinion!
