*sigh* perfume help for MIL

peanut, 23 April, 2008 at 13:22 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 21

It has fallen to me to purchase a birthday gift for my MIL. I have no idea about perfume choices for mums in their 50's.. We bought her poison before and she took the huff, we found out later it was because the perfume was called poison so we must have meant it nastily? never mind the 60 squid it cost?

any ideas please

My mum wears J'Adore by Dior, and she's 65. Samsara is quite a "mum" smell too.

I think its difficult to buy perfume for someone unless you know what they usually wear.

Given what you've just said though I think I might try Estee Lauder Beautiful.

I'm 50 ? and I like Cinnibar, Opium, White Linen, Panache, Oscar dela Renta.

I don't like Chanel no. anything. I find it too sweet, but then it all depends on your skin. It smells lovely on other people but really trashy on me .

My MIL wears Estee Lauder Pleasures and she's 61. Perfume's such a personal thing, I don't know how anyone can expect you to choose one for them.

I love Chanel allure, it smells lovely on my friend but awful on me.

My mum wears Nina Ricci - L Air du Temps. For years i didn't know she wore perfume, I just thought that was how she smelt. It comes in pretty bottles?

I bought my mum Elle by YSL for Christmas and she's 60. I really like it as well so I don't think there's an age for it.

Also, what about Addict by Dior? It's quite heavy so more of an evening scent. Or will she get offended by the name as well? ?

My MIL is 70 next year. She wears flowers by Kenzo, Angel by Theirry Muglier (sp?) and Tendre Poison.

What does she normally wear? That would help, since you cna work out what tones she likes

If you have a @the Perfume Shop' near you, you can go in there with a few ideas as to ingredients/fragrance types and they have a big book that lists the undertones/smells/ingredients of all perfumes and can give you a choice of what would suit her.

I did this a while ago with a perfume my gran liked that was no longer made, they looked up in the book what the ingredients/fragrances were for that perfume then suggested alternatives with the same ingredients.

My 60 year old mum likes Chanel No.5. Can't you find out what she wears - perfumes smell so different on different people.

    PMSL about Poison?.

unfortunately my little island doesn't do perfume stores. We don't do any stores really?

But how lovely to find a smell that was near to an old favourite❤️

Does anyone have Kenzo's Flower? From the description that sounds quite MIL'y ?

We bought my MIL Kenzo's Flower for her birthday last year, she really liked it. I liked it as well so I got a bottle for myself. It's a nice light smell, nice for the summer. I use mine for daytime use.
