Singapore recommendations

6 June, 2013 at 11:20 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 27

For those that ave visited Singapore, has anyone eaten at Ku de Ta, Sky on 57, Equinox or Catalunya? The concierge at our hotel has recommended them for a celebratory meal on our honeymoon.

Also in general any recommendations for places to eat, drink, things to do would be greatly appreciated. We are only there for 3 days and we are staying on Bras Basah Road (close to Raffles) so nothing too far out.

Also any food I should try - it's my first time in SE Asia

Thanks

Unfortunately I haven't been to those restaurants but I have some recommendations.

You have to go to Sentosa Island, it's brilliant! You can do allsorts there including swimming with pink dolphins and luge-ing. It has a nice beach and aquarium there too. You can go via taxi, there is a small toll charge to access the island via bridge.

Have a look in Raffles and buy some monkey nuts to chuck around but don't bother getting a Singapore Sling, they're not that amazing to be worth £25, in fact the ones on the plane were nicer.

    Go shopping down Orchard Road.

There is a Night Safari which was pretty good.

There was a kind of manmade lake running round the back of our hotel and we had a lovely meal out there on our first night (I was with friends, but can imagine it would be romantic at sunset!), the hotel is The Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel.

Be careful in Chinatown, we went into a buffet restaurant and just assumed the food was pre cooked and we could eat it as soon as we picked it. We were just about to start eating when the owner came over and kept saying 'Chicken soup chicken soup!', we kept saying no thank you, as one of my friends is veggie. This went on for about five minutes till another customer came in and said 'bad belly bad belly!'. That's when it dawned on us that there was a massive hole in the table with a gas tap(?). We had to put all our food in a massive metal bowl, she added water and boiled it before we could eat it. We could have been really ill if we'd eat that stuff raw.

On top of that I ate a massive spoonful of what I thought was egg fried rice, it turned out was pickled ginger, you don't want to do that trust me!!

So yeah, be careful with street food it was lovely in that place but know what you are doing!

That was four years ago though so don't know if much has changed.

Not eaten at any but Sky at 57 will have absolutely amazing views...

We stayed at Traders hotel, which is the far end of Orchard Road, away from the waterfront.

We spent the first day meandering along Orchard Road, shopping and so on.

We spent the first evening wandering around the commercial district, the Merlion, Boat Quay and the parliament/government buildings.

We spent our second day at Singapore Zoo. We didn't wait around for the night safari though. Although it's a little way out, it's really easy to get to in a taxi.

We spent our second evening at Raffles (just one drink - far too expensive for any more!), then Clarke Quay, then Emerald Hill (a long walk back to the hotel, but through the university campus etc so all very nice for us to see - we like visiting foreign universities).

To be honest, I didn't find that there was a lot to do, more that there was a lot to see. We mostly ate, drank and shopped our way around. We didn't eat anywhere particularly special either - little cafes/tapas/etc.

Sentosa Island is a good recommendation if you need more productive activities. We didn't Smiley smile

I can't remember where we stayed but it was fairly central. We went to Sentosa Island which was nice, very pretty but we didn't do any activites there just had a swim and a bit of a chill out. We spent most of our time wandering around just like FTLOMB. I would say the street food is great we ate most of meals from street cafes. I can see for a honeymoon you may want to treat yourselves but we were just on holiday. Generally when I've been to Asia we have had better food from stalls than from restaurants. I had some amazing satay and alo really good Nasi Goreng although this is an Indonesian dish I think. My sister prefers Mee Goreng which is with noodles not rice. We had a drink in the Raffles just to say we had been there and seen it but as above we only had the one drink!

Been a very long time since I went to Singapore but the food in Clarke quay was lovely and had a really good atmosphere, especially at night. The chicken satay was a bit of a speciality then, may have changed since. We also went to raffles, they have a strict dress code so make sure you check before you go.

we went in a day trip to changi prison, which was harrowing but very interesting to look round.

Sentosa island had a waterpark on it amount other attractions that was good for a day out ( was much younger then mind you)

Word of warning- lots and lots of the loos are the Asian style hole in the floor. May not be an issue for you but I absolutely hate them and spent lots of time trying to find western loo's. of course I understand that this is se Asia, would would expect them but in a place as modern as Singapore I rembrer bring shocked to see so many of them.

Hehe, don't let Mini put you off. The use of squat toilets is not a measure of modernity, it's a cultural thing. Singapore as a place is immaculate. Everywhere I went, the toilets were modern and clean, they were just a slightly different arrangement to what we're used to here! There is usually a mix in row of cubicles though, and you may see signs on the door indicating which type of loo is in which cubicle.

Yes. Singapore dollars. It's about 2:1 with the £.

Be prepared for the prices though. It's an expensive place. Expect to pay anything upwards of £6-8 for a pint of lager.

Don't get me wrong they were spotless! I just can't handle squat toilets- I'm wowed about loo's anyway let's not forget, have the 'black seat phobia' and all.

If you're caught short on a drinking night out, can you squat to pee then?

On a squat toilet or a black seat? Black seat I can do if there is company with me (either in or outside the cubicle) squat toilets no, I have to find a western loo. Then I have a drama as inevitably the seat will be black in that one.

Ah no, I can squat to pee should the need arise, it's the actual toilet set up I can't deal with.

They do amazing buffets in some of the hotels in Singapore for brunch/dinner (I'm not talking like your Chinese buffets over here) think free flowing champagne, lobster stations, oysters & sushi bars, live cooking stations, dim sum, roast meats when I get home I will post some of the links.

When I went to visit my friend out there, we did quite a lot.

We went to Raffles and paid a lot for a Singapore Sling...when in Rome and all.

We walked around the Botanical Gardens, very pretty.

Went up One Altitude for drinks.

There is a bus tour which means you see everything, would recommend this.

Shopping down Orchard Road was nice too.

You NEED to go to a Hawker place for the most amazing prawns!

This will give you a comprehensive list of all the buffets in Singapore.

    https://www.hungrygowhere.com/gallery/52-best-buffets-in-singapore-*gid-fc280400/

We went to a Champagne Sunday brunch at Equinox @ The Stamford Swissotel which was amazing with free flowing Moet.

We have now have an 8 hour transit stop in Singapore on honeymoon so we are just going to go for dinner here Carousel at The Royal Plaza http://carouselbuffet.com.sg/Menu-Description.aspx The sample menu looks pretty epic (but sadly no free flowing champagne at this one)

If you like steak Wolfgang Puck's The Cut might be worth a look (I've been to the one in London and it was the best steak I have ever eaten) https://www.marinabaysands.com/singapore-restaurants/celebrity-chefs/cut/

I don't know singapore as we just used it as stop over to other places. All I would say is stay well away from Burger King at the airport. In my defence it was very late at night and no restaurants were open. Also, it was my first fast food burger in 3 years. It made me really sick. For 2 weeks. Awful but was great kick start to wedding diet actually. Not that you were considering Burger King of course. I will also add that it was my first burger king since uni. I'm bstill ashamed though.

Mini I was shocked by squat toilets as well and would never use. And I would never pee in the street.

Funky did you have to book for the Equinox? The brunch sounds just the thing I am looking for, do you remember how much it was roughly?

This isnt prison speak. I have a genuine phobia of black loo seats.

    This is my worst toilet nightmare;

ahh, I don;t know why I thought this was a revolutionary development in toilet seats, actually pretty old-school.

I don't trust restaurants in London where the toilets are so dark you can't see the seat, eg Gaucho

If memory serves (it was 3 years ago I went) it was about 120 Singapore $ which at the time I think was around £60 per person which was awesome for the amount of Moet we drank and seafood we ate.

If you want to go for a champagne brunch I would definitely book as they are very popular.

If you after a champagne buffet Melt at the The Mandarin Oriental I have been told has nicer food but the views are not as good as equinox.

Annoyingly they don't have any prices on the websites, maybe give them an email if your interested.

Thanks for that! Emailed them asking for prices, the menu looks great, perfect for the OH who is a bit picky. It seems the Equinox is roughly around $148 dollars with the potential of it increasing, perhaps there are different options. I would prefer nicer food than views if we are able to take in the views from somewhere just for a drink.
