Smoking

Panjita, 16 November, 2011 at 08:45 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 253

Do you smoke? If not how do you feel about smoking? If you do smoke do want or have you tried to give up? Is passive smoking a concern to you? Do you smoke around your children? What do you think about the proposed ban on smoking in cars?

For non-smokers, how do you feel about other people smoking around you and your family?

I tried smoking as a teenager (it seemed 'grown up'!?) but only a few times and I never really liked it. I don't like people smoking around me and detest the smell on my clothes and hair when I have been in the house of a smoker.

I used to smoke when I was younger (only one or two a day tops though). When I was out on the sherbets I could easily smoke 10-20. Gave up about 6 years ago completely but had one or two since when drinking. Enjoyed it at the time, but then felt horrific.

Day to day, I really hate smoking. I don't like the smell of it. However if I'm out and drinking & smell it I still fancy one.

My Dad was a heavy smoker and was very young when he died so that's always been in the back of my mind. Always insisted because of this, I would never smoke however "all the cool kids were doing it".

If someone smokes, I'd rather they didn't near me, as I don't want my hair & clothes to smell. No problem with people smoking if that is their choice though (I can see where this thread might go!)

They are talking about banning smoking whilst driving and I have to say I think it's a good idea.

Never have, no desire to, disgusting habit that should be banned completely.

Nothing worse than walking down the street and getting a noseful of someone else's smoke.

I avoid the company of smokers whenever possible - unfortunately it's not easy because even when one comes and sits next to you on the bus you can smell it on their clothes and breath.

My name is vixj83 and I'm a smokeaholic.

Lol, I smoked from the age of 16 to 27, I quit in April this year. I found it fairly easy to quit which surprised me. This was my first quit attempt as I had always been terrified it would be too hard. For the first 2 weeks I used an electronic cigarette replacement. Moodwise I was like a hormonal, crazy, crying, mess then just like that suddenly I didn't need the e-cig any more and my mood improved. OH was very supportive, he just has to remind me of what that 2 weeks was like for us both and thats all it takes to stop me from slipping and letting it be for nothing.

I still enjoy standing beside a smoker outside the club when I've been drinking. Mmmm passive....

I do not miss my clothes smelling. I notice this now when we've been visiting the FMIL

    ?

    ...knew it wouldn't be long!

Shouldn't be banned completely. People choose to smoke & they have that choice. Yes, it is unhealthy, but so are a lot of things. You cannot ban everything.

I don't smoke and never have (I have asthma) but my H does. I do not like the smell of smoke on my clothes and I was pleased when it was banned in pubs and restaurants.

I do think it should be banned in cars - I was nearly in an accident with a car who's driver had been trying to light a cigarette and it distracted her.

I would rather my H didn't smoke for health reasons, but he enjoys it. He never smokes in the house, always in the back garden with the door shut. He never smokes in the car either.

    Shucks, Thanks guys

PS I just want to add, although I say I found it easy, I am more than aware that for a lot of people, especially those who may have smoked longer, and heavier than myself it is no mean feat. Definately the key to it for me was:

    a) To want to - I didn't want to be craving fags, sneaking fags or stinking of fags on my wedding day.

    b) to not be able to keep affording to smoke probably was also a big factor!!!

As for the smoking whilst driving, during my college years I used to smoke on the way in. Had a few incidents where I dropped the cigarette inside. Cue looking frantically for it & not concentrating fully on the road.

MIL smokes whilst driving & when we are sitting behind her. Hate it. Also agree smoking whilst children are in the car isn't good at all.

I started when I was 14/15 and have smoked on an off since then. I stopped during both of my pregnancies. I don't want to give up.

Passive smoking is a concern of mine, but I make sure that my habit doesn't affect others.

I don't smoke around my children - they don't even know that we smoke. We both feel that we can't tell them not to smoke if they knew we smoked anyway.

The proposed ban of smoking in cars doesn't bother me - I don't know anyone who smokes in their car anyway.

I don't tend to smoke indoors, I don't know anyone else that smokes in their home.

I wouldn't take my children somewhere if there were people smoking indoors.

I've never smoked and I absolutely hate it, but I wouldn't deny anyone else their choice to do so, as long as they don't blow it in my face.

Mr B will have the odd one when he gets reeeeeeeeeally hammered and I hate that too, but it's getting more and more rare that he does so.

One thing that does annoy me is that the smokers in our office, having sat around in the kitchen drinking tea between 8.30 and 9.00am, go out at 8.55 for their cigarette and don't come back in until 9.10am. Same thing happens after lunch. So everyone else is sitting at their desks working at 9am and 2pm, whereas the smokers are outside. I don't think that's fair.

I would class myself as a 'social smoker' - oxymoron I know! OH is a much more habitual smoker than myself.

I don't smoke in the house, around the children, in the street (I think it looks trashy and is inconsiderate to other shoppers) or in the car, so the car ban wouldn't really bother me.

I do think policing it would be quite tricky, after all how often do you still see people using mobile phones whilst driving?!

I've never understood 'smoking breaks' in work time. Nobody with a drink or drug addiction gets given 'work time' to go and indulge in their habit, so why should smokers?

The fine is a deterrent to many. A similar fine for smoking in the car would be a good step in the right direction.

However, I suppose a long, agonising death through cancer caused by smoking is quite a good penalty in its own right...

I had my first ciggie when I was 13 and have smoked on and off since then. I have never smoked in my house or in my car and my parents still dont know that I smoked.

I havent had one for 2 months. Didnt even have one when I went out for my birthday.

Mr Tricks has been a heavy smoker since he was 13 and was on about 40 a day. Again, never smoked in the house but did in his car when on his own. He gave up on the 20th July this year and I am sooooooooo proud of him!

I dont think it should be banned completely as its peoples choice to smoke and that choice shouldnt be taken away from them.

Drink and drugs impair your judgement so you cannot compare them to smoking. Of course no-one would be allowed to shoot up/ drink an alcoholic drink during work time. (Although it would make my working day shorter - the drink, not drugs. Drugs are bad, kids.)

Nope, although if someone is driving erratically/without due care or attention they can be "done". Whether it be whilst smoking/eating then people can still be pulled over.

Never smoked, never really saw the appeal. I admit to having some very illiberal thoughts on smoking when someone smelling of fags sits next me on the train or is walking upwind of me in the street but realistically I'm more at risk from the beat up old bus spewing deisel fumes at me than someone's ciggy that I'll be exposed to for all of 30 seconds til I or they cross the road so I have to bite that down.

PILs smoke and I do think it smells bad but it's their house/car so I really have no right to say anything. The situation might change if we have kids, I suspect I have the potential to become a bit fascist about the whole thing.

Yes, but smoking does not affect your ability to do your job. Nicotine patches are available if people suffer that badly.

I don't smoke, I think it smells disgusting and is such a waste of money. My parents smoke so I have grew up around it and now my brothers both smoke. It's never appealed to me, I had a few cheeky drags whilst at school so that I was 'cool' but nothing more than that. I just don't see what is so appealing about it?

I hate when people smoke around me. I can really smell it on my clothes when I've been around a smoker. If H started smoking he would be issued with an ultimatum, it would be vile and i just couldn't be with some one who smelt of smoke all the time.

I think it's an incredibly selfish habit, given the obvious health risks associated with smoking I am astonished at how many people continue to smoke despite knowing that they are potentially wasting away their life just for a cigarette. I wish my mum would stop, my dad only smokes when she's around. I think if she stopped he would too. But she never will because she just doesn't want to.

I've never understood why they haven't banned smoking whilst driving already. It really angers me to see somebody smoking whilst they are driving. It's totally irresponsible.

Now this I would use in an argument as to why they SHOULD get fag breaks, not the opposite. Also I would say I've never ever in all my 11 years of smoking had such an extreme reaction as this, maybe because I always had the freedom to have one every few hours. I would also like to add that there is no such thing as smoke breaks in any workplace I've worked in, we're entitled to breaks by law due to the fact we're in front of computer monitors all day long. We're entitled to 5 mins per hour away from the desk so between pee breaks and the fact it only takes 5 mins to smoke a fag unlike the colleagues of those skivers mentioned earlier, I used to get 2 every morning and afternoon, plus 2 at lunch.

Banning smoking would be a terrible move. There would be outrage, it would become like a low class drug, it would still happen cos afterall its an addiction and would lead to higher crime rates.

I'd disagree with anyone who wants to take away my right to choose.

    ***************************************************************************************************

ETA - PS AJ, as a non-smoker I understand that you don't know what its like at all, so I'll let you off, but as I was saying in an earlier remark, you have to choose for yourself or it doesn't work for you, it just really sucks to be forced into something and personally it makes me rebel.

Hello, I'm Sam and I'm an ex-smoker. It has been 2 months and 15 days since my last cigarette. I quit cold turkey when I found out I was pregnant. I thought I'd miss it more than I do but the smell makes me feel very queasy (everything makes me feel very queasy) and it's a bit scary to see how much money we've saved, especially because I b1tched at H and made him quit too ?

I have no feeling about other people smoking in general but I don't like it if people thoughtlessly smoke near my kids and I try to avoid inhaling second hand smoke. I don't look obviously pregnant at the moment so I can't complain about people inadvertently blowing smoke in my direction.

    I can't stomach self righteous, sanctimonious ex-smokers or non-smokers.

Smoking is a drug of the lower classes. The only difference is it's not yet illegal, despite its highly addictive properties.
