Sorry if this has been asked a million times before....

The current Miss L the future Mrs H, 7 November, 2010 at 16:23 Posted on Planning 0 13

How long should you leave to plan a wedding? We've been engaged for a couple of months now and said we won't get married until Summer 2012. We've got a lot of other stuff on at the moment so haven't done any planning at all (although I have done LOTS of looking on the internet for ideas when OH isn't around Smiley smile ) which I am fine with. I'm just wondering, when should I start saying to him "we really should start looking at venues now." I don't want to find we are left with not enough time to plan.

Advice would be great, thanks Smiley smile

Summer 2012 is only 18 months or so away so you could start the venue search now - it can take quite a while to find what you are looking for?

My planning will have been since August 2009, get married in March 2011... took us 3 months to put the deposit down on the venue!

It's really personal preference, some people plan their weddings over 2+ years, others in much less time. I planned mine within 5 months.

Hi, am also getting married in the summer of 2012 and we have been venue looking now, we will hopefully in the nexrt couple of weeks have a venue and church booked, after this we are hoping to secure a photography and then next year start looking at dresses/bridemaids dresses and suits and entertainment.

Although I have already got in mind what I want for centre pieces, what i want my invites to look like, table plans etc etc, we know the colour scheme we want (pink and purple) x

Definitely worth starting to look for a venue now, especially if you have a particular date or dates in mind, as some venues do get booked up over a year in advance. The earlier you start looking the more likely you are to get what you want. Everyone keeps telling me we are really well organised, but it's just that I like to get things done in advance so as to avoid last-minute panics.

So definitely no harm in looking at venues, meeting photographers and choosing the ceremony venue (if different from reception venue).

    Hey,

We're getting married 25th August 2012. So far we have booked the church, we're seriously looking at reception venues at the moment, and will possibly be booking that this week. I'm also ordering my dress within the next couple of weeks.

We are looking at togs at the moment getting an idea of who's around, and will probably book that end of this year or early next.

I wouldn't say we're particularly organised, I just can't bear the thought of finding something I love and then leaving it a bit and not being able to have it cos someone else has snuck in and booked in the meantime hehe ?. I'm a natural worrier, so its just easier to have all the major ones sorted so we can both relax a bit with the rest of the planning.

If your looking already i would book when you find the perfect venue you can leave invites centre pieces etc till nearer the time. But the more expensive things book while you can than you can just keep popping in as and when you have the money to pay bits off.

Also you will be able to let family know so they don't book any holidays like mine did then have to cancel!

If your having a registrar don't forget to go 12months before (earliest you can do it i think) to book your date and time or you may find yourself with a venue and struggling to get a registrar on that date.

The most important thing to book is the venue & registrar or Church as these can be booked up to 2yrs in advance.

I worry about my best friend cause he got engaged 4 months ago but hasn't booked anywhere yet despite wanting to get married in July 2012. They're planning on having a swish marquee in her parent's garden but I still think they should be getting that and the church sorted

We've got both venues sorted and we're May 2012

I would say book the venues ASAP.. they get booked up wayy in advance..

as for the rest.. dont rush! you have plenty of time! I got engaged january this year and had a major panic that i only had 15 months to plan.. I was COMPLETELY finished and all planned out in august and i have spent the last 2 months wondering why i rushed..

I have nothing to do now and wished i waited and stretched it out having little things to look forward to and enjoying the planning. Now the wedding feels aaaaaaaaages away and Im itching for things to do! lol

    xx
