Swimmers - straw hair, how do you avoid it?

R-A, 27 June, 2009 at 10:31 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 12

Those of you who swim regularly - how do you stop your hair drying out?

I have (usually) very tolerant and well behaved hair. Use whatever shampoo is on special offer, or tesco value, with no problems.

Now I'm swimming 3-4x a week every week and it's starting to take its toll on my hair. I only usually wash my hair every other day. So I'm in the situation where nearly every harwash now is post-swimming.

I'm using a 'swimmers' shampoo' atm (dunno brand name - was on offer, it's organic, possibly therefore not very effective?) with little effect tbh compared to normal.

Any suggestions?

Please don't make me wear a swimming hat ?

Are you using a swimmers conditioner as well?

I would maybe suggest an intensive treatment once a week as well.

I use boots own swimmer shampoo and seperate conditioner. I did try an all in one - and I looked like Worzel Gummidge!!!!

I think really the only way to avoid it is to wear a hat - but that is quite frankly, just silly!!!

MM - yeah I am, although it's an organic thingy and I'm not sure it's got much that does anything in it IWSWIM. Are the Boots ones any good?

I've never used leave in conditioner, will maybe give that a go.

The boots stuff is good - my hair doesn't smell of chlorine which is good. I tend to wash my hair each morning depsite having washed it the night before after swimming - and it is still soft and silky.

Sorry - you need a hat! My hair was really dryed out. So I cut a load of it off and invested in a hat. I haven't had any more problems. I tried various shampoo / conditioners but they didn't really work for me.

I use the boots swim shampoo and my hair is a bit better for it. I have now bought a hat as I'm having my hair permed in 3 weeks so want to make its not too horrible for then. Whilst I was researching perms and swimming and I read that if you wet your hair before you swim your hair doesn't absorb so much chlorine. Also you can add leave in conditioner on after you have wet it and before you put your hat on.

I used to spray on a 'leave in' conditioner before I swam and then tied it back, as much of it out of the way as I could.

Then rinsed it thoroughly as soon as I got out of the pool, untied it and left to dry.

Then washed and conditioned as soon as I got home.

Mine was bleached then and was OK.

Wear a silcon hat it will make a huge difference, your hair will be damp when you get out of the pool not saturated.

Also Kerastase hair products (buy from the hairdresser) are very good, not designed for swimming as such but will do the same job if not better than swim products.

We swim once or twice a day.

All I can advise (aside form wearing a hat!) Wash your hair straight after swimming, comb through with leave in conditioner, Avoid hair drying/straightening as much as possible/limit to a couple of times a week and have a regular trim.

I have dry hair so I used to only wash it once a week but now I'm swimming 3-4 times a week I have to wash it more, I use Aussie products, their remoisurising shampoo and three minute miracle conditioner I use every wash, I also use their leave in conditioner before I swim, it seems to work for me. Also limiting the use of hair straighteners as much as I can.

Just got in. Thanks for replies everyone. Will definitely investigate leave in conditioners, tying my hair back and different brand products.

Still trying to avoid swimming hats though - such horrid memories of school lessons - I had really long hair that took ages to get in and they hurt!

I forget the brand, but my hairdesser recommended a treatment that was an intensive chlorine remover, but he recommended me coating it on my hair prior to swimming, then washing off after, it kept my hair lovely & it smelled gorgeous. Would help if I recalled exact name of product, but maybe a call to a hairdresser would be more help!

Sorry - i think you need a hat! Once you've worn it once, you won't be bothered by it. Why don't you give it a go for a month adn see if it makes a worthwhile difference. Be brave - who cares how you look in the pool?
