This scrappage business

It sounds good, but I'm not exactly sure who it will help incentivise?

The Govt will give me 2k for my banger.... but only if I buy a brand new car. I'm thinking the 2k will just about cover the depreciation of driving it off the garage forecourt. I drive a 5 door Fiesta. The current Fiesta sells for 10k according to the Ford website. So only 8k to find then!

If I was interested in, and had (very nearly) enough money to buy, a brand new car, then why the heck would I be driving a car that's over 10 years old?

I just said pretty much the same thing to my Dad earlier. Seems pretty pointless to me.

Actually the Government only gives you 1k. The other k is supposed to come from the industry. I imagine the industry half will be covered by 'options' (like tyres), free mats, a shiny tax disc holder and a couple of 100k free services. In other words, what you already get when you buy a car anyway, but they'll hang a price tag on it.

I'd prefer an incentive to actually scrap cars.

Is there anything in the small print to stop people buying a banger for £50 and then immediately P/Xing it for a new car and getting 2k off?

Well Im buying a brand new car next month (its on order) and Ive just sold my 14 year old car to someone but will be part exing my 1 year old car for the new one. Id rather sell the 4x4 for less than 2k to someone I know will get a good few years more out of her then send it to be scrapped with basically nearly a new engine under the bonnet.

Anyway that by the by....... I agree that most folk that drive a car over 10 years old probably couldnt afford a brand new car even with a 2k incentive. Im not sure who its going to help

I wondered that. I looked it up on the Ford website and basically it says you have to have owned the car for 12 months. And ithe scheme is only scheduled to run for 12 months IIRC.

My car's a V reg (is that 10years ish? I lost count when registrations went every 6mths) and this is fab news for me! I'll be looking to get a new car on finance once I go back to work so that's £2k less deposit to find ?

I suspect most people with a 10yr old car but wanting a new one will be buying the new one on finance so it'll maybe lead to more consumer debt...

My 'car' is 1973, wouldn't take two grand for it though.

Just read that not all manufacturers are participating in the scheme - didn't realise it was optional!

My parents drive a 10 years old Golf and are just away to change it for a brand new one (they've only had three cars since I was 5!). They won't scrap the old one though, they reckon there's a few years left in it and are giving it to my sister.

But I'd agree that it's not going to help the majority of people.

Volde, from what I gather its cars registered before 31 July 1999 which is the 'T' reg cars, so I dont think yours would qualify

Everything I have read abut a similar german scheme has been resoundingly negative. Totally serviceable cars getting scrapped, the price of scrap metal plummeting, in Germany at least it seems to be helping foreign manufacturers and not german ones, which was partly their aim, and is costing for a fortune for very little benefit.

Well I hope it will benefit me, in that my car is 13 years old and I have been wanting to replace it for a couple of years. This scheme will be the difference between me having a car that's a couple of years old and a brand new one - which I've never had so I feel I've paid my dues! Although I agree with Voldie that it may increase consumer debt in some cases, I'm hoping to have a decent amount saved up and possibly negotiate a 0% or low rate finance deal for the rest of it - in any case as I'm looking at a supermini size car I'll be able to pay it off in 2-3 years depending on how much I can save in advance.

So it's a yay from me.
