Typical honeymoon destinations

That you just don't fancy the look of?

For me it has to be Mexico or the Dominican Republic.

You?

Mexico, St Lucia/other generic Caribbean, Thailand.

Would love to visit Mexico but would never view it as a beach holiday/honeymoon trip, more a dusty road trip place (have friends there so it's on the cards at some point). Seemed like everyone went to St Lucia when the first wave of friends got married. Thailand, not sure, can't put my finger on it, maybe again that lots of people honeymoon there. Would go for a holiday now though (although Vietnam is higher on the list).

Would like to visit the Dominican Republic, again in a dusty road trip style though. It's the home of merengue and that makes me smile a lot Smiley smile Maybe combined with Cuba and do the LAtin Dance thing all at once?

I wouldn't like to go anywhere where they eat mainly spicy food/seafood/rice. I'd die of starvation.

I personally wouldn't want to go anywhere that the main part of the holiday was laying on the beach. I don't like beach holidays, I find them incredibly dull. I like to be doing something all the time, so I'd have to go somewhere with lots of things to do and see. That's why I'm hoping for a return to Australia and New Zealand for our honeymoon.

Having said that, I have been to Fiji and I did enjoy it, but we had activities to do and we moved around lots of different islands.

Probably the Dominican Republic, but only because I've already been there 3 times. They were great holidays though!

All of them. We are the type of people who prefer to spend all of holidays being active and come back feeling fitter or if we're in a city going around every muesum and gallery possible. It would be my idea of holiday hell sitting on a beach doing nothing for a week.

(we're glamping in the highlands and are already picking out what to climb!)

When we were looking at honeymoons, id put these on my 'dont want to visit' list, as theyare generic (IMO) and had places like Sri Lanka and South Africa on it instead..but when i learnt about whats there,. not just a fancy hotel holiday, theres history and stuff outsdie if you travel a bit (which we intend to do!) I changed my mind..and now we are heading to Mexico!!

Have had a think about what I DIDN'T want for a honeymoon and it comes down to pretty much any place where the primary accommodation is composed of high rise white blocks of 400+ rooms, surrounding a swimming pool "complex" (with the name written on the bottom, ugh) and with eight restaurants. I (rightly or wrongly) consider this to be a feature of many Caribbean destinations so think that's what put me off.

Shall I hold your coat whilst you stamp your feet?

Nowhere requiring anti-malarial prophylaxis medications- so that rules out most of Africa & Sth America, although a safari would have been good

No where with a war going on

No where I'd have to wear a burkha, walk behind hubby and not hold hands

Where do you imagine you need to do that? Unless you were thinking of going to Iran for a honeymoon? Smiley smile

In Malaysia, there were a LOT of women wearing burkha. Whilst holding hands. And not wearing a wedding ring.

We wouldn't go to the Maldives, to me it looks beautiful but to my OH it looks like a 1 mile square water prison! He hates the sea, and gets bored lounging about!

For me it would have to be South Africa or Thailand. I know these are somewhat contraversial answers but they are just never appealed to me.

Also Japan, China, Vietnam etc - just not for me.

We considered both South Africa (ultimately rejected as being a "bit shooty") and Japan (ultimately rejected as being a "bit f*cking expensive).

Vietnam though - look at this beauty:

I'm sure you know you're own mind but really (this is assuming you are a bit scared), a long haul flight is so much easier an experience than a four hour short hop (general tiredness etc aside). The planes are better equipped, you get your own TV, regular meals/drinks/alcohol to take your mind off it. Plus, as wierd as it sounds, because the planes are so much bigger, your visual and movement cues are hugely damped. You can't see "up the plane" to see an angle of ascent and if you're in the middle, you can't see out of a window and you don't experience much tilting motion. I am a bit of a nervous flyer but can honestly say that the Airbus A380 double decker massive job was the least scary flight experience of my life Smiley smile

All this to be ignored if it's not fear that's stopping you Smiley smile

He he, sorry, just being picky. I too would avoid such countries, not least becasue I'd probably be in a prison cell before the first day was over...I have an Iranian student who has asked me to visit with her. I have refused, ostensibly because it's not appropriate for me to go on social trips with my students but actually, I could never appear to sanction those kind of laws. Sorry if that sounds a bit high-horsey to others (or worse, intolerant).
