Very boring plea for vacuum cleaner recommendations - is a Dyson worth it?

Mr C refused to pay dyson prices...

We bought a new one yesterday, a VAX one from Argos, half price at £79.99. It's a bit noisy and fairly heavy at 8kg but I just thought it would be a bit of a workout hoovering the house!!!

We have 3 Dysons. I would never have any other brand now. I converted H before we got hitched, hence us having 2 uprights. We later got one of the hand held rechargable ones which is excellent for our hard floors.

H was so impressed with mine that he got one, which he promptly took down to his mom's to show her and they bought one within a week.

Some may argue and I'm sure will say other brands are just as good but for us it's Dyson.

We have also got a VAX, i love it.. it's fantastic best hoover i have had and i had a dyson previously my parents have a dyson and they no end of troubles with it and dad's had to fix it a few times.. my sister loves my vacuum and does a really good job on carpets and we have a dog..!

I've got a Henry and a Hetty. They're fab.

By far the best vac we have ever had. I would def invest

House is full of Dyson products as H works for them.....I know far too much about the technology of it all (yawn!) but definitely worth it!!

I do like our dyson but its very heavy for moving bout, stairs etc. I prefer my folks nilfisk!

Hetty lover here. The only other brand I'd want is a Miele but just can't justify the price difference.

I've two Dysons, highly recemmend them for wooden and carpeted floors. I've got an upright one and the animal which is better on the wood IMO.

We've got a dyson, its a small upright with a ball. It is brilliant, we've said more than once it is one of the best things we've ever bought. I bought it when we moved into a small 1 bed rented house because although the house was tiny it had laminate, carpet, lino and ceramic floor tiles and this one if a multi floor thing. I've since converted both my sisters.

My sis had a Vax said it was awful, she had to send it back three times and said it weighed a tonne!

We've got a Miele Cat & Dog (we don't have a cat or a dog, or any other animal for that matter - just me who sheds a lot of hair!). It's fab! It's got 2 "heads", one is the turbo one and is fantastic for picking up hairs on the floor. Think we paid about £145. Got it from Amazon (used a price comparison site to find the cheapest place)

I wept at paying that price there was no way I was paying for a dyson. Plus I've heard mixed reviews about it.

We have 2 Dysons. 1 small one and the new handheld which I use everywhere as so convenient. I would never buy another brand. My Mum has had 3 vacuums in the time I have had my 1 dyson. No bags, no loss of suction and washable filters so worth every penny.

This- we have this one and we do have a cat. Its a fab hoover, had it 4 years and never a problem, its a great hoover. We paid £195 from John Lewis.

We have a dyson that in the last few months has made some strange noised and the handle recently snapped off as H tried to carry it upthe stairs, however, her worked out that he has had it for about 12 years! It's lasted amazingly well!

We're looking for a replacement as I just can't stand our Vax animal any more. It was my parent's cast-off and I can see why they got rid of it - it sounds like a jet engine taking off, it's embarrasingly loud. I can't use it in the evenings because I'm sure I'll disturb the neighbours!!

We're considering a Dyson but family reviews haven't been great. OH's grandparents swear by Sebo, but I think they're up there with Dyson/Miele pricings

I highly recommend the Dyson. It's the best I've ever used for picking up cat hairs. I broke ours once being heavy handed, got on the phone to them and had a replacement part free in the post the next day, you don't get that service with cheaper brands.

I love my Hetty But apparently VAX are good value for the price and as Mrs C said, Argos currently have them on offer.
