very random song help

~~~liz~~~, 15 May, 2009 at 15:51 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 31
My cousin is making a CD to give to Sony (they requested one to see what she sounds like aparantly) and she's asked me to help her find an indie song that she can sing. Like Leona did 'run'....and Im stuck. Everything I suggest is no good (so why ruddy ask me????).
So, wise ones of hitched....What slowish, not too guitary indie songs do you love that have the potential of being remade for a female vocalist who likes soul music? I got fed up after a day and a half of trying to help and told her to sing Wired for Sound. She wasnt impressed.
    To me this screams REM or Radiohead - good, solid, well-known numbers.
    For something a bit more original, try The Pixies, I'd love to hear an acoustic / soul version of Monkey Gone To Heaven
    Or really push the boat out with a re-working of Dinosaur Jr's Freak Scene.
    Radiohead got shrugged off straight away with lots of laughter.
    Have suggested The Pixies so just waiting for an outcome on that one.
    Thanks P&P.
    I've been listening to my old Ash CD lately (Girl from Mars, Angel Interceptor) - great memories.
    From the same era, how about Linger by the Cranberries, or some Wonderstuff. Not Size of a Cow, but maybe Golden Green or Cartoon Boyfriend.
    How about some of the earlier punk / indie - Sound of the Suburbs by The Members
    Well she's not liking the pixies idea.
    I did think of Linger but shes not liking anything I suggest that is older than a year old! I will give here all your suggestions. Even if she doesnt like them, Im annoying next door with my singing!
    Thanks again.
    I get the impression that nothing will ever be quite right. ?
    If she wants modern, then you can't go wrong with All These Things That I've Done by the Killers - although I think she's being a bit dismissive of Indie's golden age, the early Manchester Scene, Wedding Present etc.
    Good luck with that one.
    Bang on the money!
    Its getting to be quite annoying now. She wants fame and fortune, to be the next beyonce, sing motown to until its coming out of everyones ears without actually doing anything about it. Shes dropped out of 2 colleges because theyre not letting her sing what she wants. The last one even sat her down and said to her 'your not an american black woman, its not working for you' but shes still insisting that she will be the next big thing. I want to help her but its just so annoying!
    I need to let her just get on with it dont I?
    If she doesnt want anything older than a year old then all i can suggest is something like the killers or similar. She probably is being too picky for her own good. If she did get picked up by a label then they'd never let her get away with that attitude i'm pretty sure. besides its not the age of the record its the sound on it!
    One of my first suggestions but she doesnt like them. The girl has no taste.
    Thanks for all your help everyone but Ive now been told I only like sh1t music and none of it is any good. Some of which, I agree with but couldnt care less. She's now searching herself and thinking of doing a One Republic song instead. ?
    She probably could sing that well Eric but in all honesty, if she asks me again for help any time soon, im likely to blast some happy hardcore at her just to make her cry. Ive spent the last 2 days trying to help her and nothing is good enough. The bottom line is, she will only sing songs that she loves.
    The list so far is neither one of us by gladys knight, heartless by kris allen(american idol) and some john legend song that ive never heard of.
    I did say to her to sing a Korn song but she took offence and is now ignoring me. ?
    David Gray, Night Blindness or Say Hello, Wave Goodbye
    Alternatively, if she wants to scare the bejayus out of them, then The Emperors New Clothes by Sinead - or anything by sinead - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wiWN4KIT4So
    Never Been To Me by charlene is also excellent ?*
    *Please do not listen to a word I say
    Elbow - Grounds for Divorce
    The Guillemots - I don't really know much of their stuff but its always on in MrD's car when I get in.
    There's also a new artist called Bat for Lashes (girl) who is really good. MrD loves her and she's growing on me. She's a bit Cranberryish and very good.
    How about Revelry by Kings of Leon? Modernish and a lovely song. Although she really doesn't deserve any help.
