Videographer - too good to be true?

BlossomJ, 24 April, 2012 at 23:47 Posted on Planning 0 17

Hiya, just wanted everyone's opinions on this videographer... They have a special offer on for a number of days of £99 for the gold package which is usually £850... Is this because they are new and need bookings to give testimonials and attract more business?? We are wanting a videographer, but finding one even around £500 has been proving difficult!! Anyway your advice would be much appreciated brides ?

Wow does sound like a bargain! I would have the same concerns as you I guess it depends how important a VOG is to you?? if you couldn't afford any of the VOGs you seen and it's a case of this one or not have one I'd be inclined to take a risk it's quite cheap in the grand scheme of things.

Actually you have a lot to lose.

    Here's some questions for you.

How many bookings do you think they get at £849?

Why do they need the testimonials?

How professional are they, as in how will they conduct themselves alongside other suppliers, video guys often get in the way of others like photographers.

That's just 3 questions, moreover the £849 value is only perceived. I could say my current price is discounted from £4 billion does that make me a bargain because I said so?

Worryingly the intros are like a sci fi / action / horror movie. Do they run a dungeon part time?

That's not to say don't use them, we all started somewhere but it's your wedding day. Use due diligence.

They also seem strangely familiar.....any other togs / cameramen noticed this?

They even have a complaints page, awesome.

I can't comment, I don't want to knock / promote another business incorrectly. Sorry. Just layout, look, feels very similar to a business I was aware of up that way.

Video soundtrack reminds me of these guys too:

To be honest, looking at their wedding example I think giving a camera to my little brother will turn out the same quality!

This is about the 4th time they've done this 'offer' in the 2 months I've been aware of them.

I've asked for examples apart from the (crap) clips they have, apparently, they are 'coming soon'...someone else I spoke to about it told me they said the same to them 6 months ago...their version of soon is different to mine!

I see no testimonials about their videos, only sparse 'thanks for filming my wedding, can't wait to see the dvd!' - why haven't they come back to compliment the video?

Don't be attracted to the price and risk being full of disappointment. I would never book something as important as a VOG without 2-3 examples.

Thanks ? this is why I love hitched ? from their Facebook it looks like they always have a "deal" on... & comparing the quality to other ones I seen, it is the same as just getting a guest to do it. Think I'll give it a miss, just to be on the safe side. I don't wanna risk it, just for paying a ridiculously cheap price.

& I have also been thinking about how the video guys can get in the way of togs, so I am gonna ask our potential tog for some recommendations of people he's worked with!!

Thanks everyone for the help, moment of madness averted ?

Yes, they couldn't provide me with an audio sample which is something I really want to be perfect on the video. I think I had gone a bit mental, was being kept awake by the neighbours ? I've deleted the link as I don't want other hitchers to book with them and be disappointed!

When I asked them see a full video they said their videos are for the bride an groom only and not for other people to view and they don't have time to make any new trailers as they're busy editing! Sounded very dodgy to me

Any professional company wouldn't object to giving you a full DVD to watch, infact they should be bending over backards to give you one and show off how great they are.

Alot of people regret not getting a video, but I think it would be an even bigger regret if you had a company film your day and it turned out to be awful.

If you can't see a full DVD, walk away.

Plus another thing, make sure that any sample DVD you may get is actually filmed and edited by the person that will be doing your Wedding as some companies use freelance camera people and it is your luck of the draw who turns up on your Wedding day. I have worked freelance for other companies in the past only to see them use my footage as samples at Wedding Shows, even though it may not be myself that will be filming that day.

I agree with 99% of what Andrew posted, although often a craft editor and great cameraman are a better combination than a great cameraman with editing skills IYSWIM, Editing is very time consuming and if the vid is in great demand, it is often better to have a trusted editor to polish their work and maintain workflow. Some vids want to maintain total control of their product, which is absolutely fine, although their are more than one business practises.
