wearing black as a wedding guest?

bluewater, 27 July, 2010 at 21:23 Posted on Planning 0 24

What is the general hitched consensus? i'm personally not bothered - black is probably about 95% of my wardrobe - but i know that others may not be as happy?

any black dress would of course be jazzed up with a funky chunky necklace, a cool fascinator and wicked shoes.

so please vote yay or nay, and help me solve my wardrobe dilemma!

I don't understand why black is frowned upon as it can look so classy and fab especially when you accessorize the outfit the way you are describing.

See I'm not a fan of ppl wearing black to weddings. But I guess as long as you brighten it up with funky shoes etc then it would look fine!

see, i have a thing about no black or white for weddings too! i didn't have a problem with others wearing black to mine, i in fact think it looks really classy, but i guess i don't want others to think i'm being disrespectful?

i suppose it would be worse if i wore white to compete with the bride... ?

I don't see the problem with it, I wore a black and white dress mainly black with a few white flowers) to FIL's wedding a few weeks back.

My auntie is wearing white to my wedding. It's a white shift dress and short jacket so not likely to be confused with a wedding though.

I do have a problem with people wearing jeans to a wedding, even if it's only for the evening reception.

I think black to a wedding is fine, I don't see why people object to it??

Don't really have a problem with it as long as it's either got a pattern of some sort on it or it's combined with some coloured stuff. Even if the shoes are black a bright pair of tights and matching jewellery can look brilliant. I can see why black from head to toe might miff a few people since it can look a bit dour and funereal but with the appropriate accessories I wouldn't bother. Ditto with white, although I think the issue with that is if the bride is in ivory it could make her dress look a bit odd if you were next her in the photos.

I don't have a problem with it. It would not bother me if anyone wore black to my wedding.

Whilst looking for my wedding dress me and mum were talking and traditionally you used to wear white to funerals and black to weddings.

    WSS ?

I've worn black a few times, but I've always made sure I've worn a colour with it too, so in my jewellery and pashmina or something. I think if you think carefully about your accessories then it's fine.

I would much rather a guest coming in a jazzed up black dress rather than white/cream/ivory!

I've worn black to lots of weddings ( I do go to lots!) As long as it is accessorised with bright colours it can look very striking. Saying that I have done 3 Black & White weddings this year & also 2 in Black & Hot Pink.

I think blacks fine. I must have worn black loads of times to weddings and never realised it was a bit of a no-no! I certainly wouldnt be upset if someone wore black to mine. The LBD is timeless!

Definatly not for a summer wedding, it doesn't look as good as colours or lighter shades in photos.

    Hmmm.....

At my wedding most of the men wore black and looked very dashing... there wasn't a dress code on the day (they must have all phoned each other up the night before and co-ordinated thier outfits!!!0 ?

The ONLY thing that DID bother me (and even my husband and a few other guests commented on it on the day) was my OH's step sister who turned up in a full length floaty white dress, she had a red bag and hat to go with it but after the service took it off and proceeded to float around the venue as if she owned it (that's her though, very much an attention seeker and a bit of a piss head)

I REALLY don't think guests should wear white to a wedding unless stipulated by the bride...

    Just my opinion... :-) x
