Wedding Gift Lists??

WeddingPrincess, 6 October, 2009 at 09:05 Posted on Planning 0 9

Just wanted to get the general consensus from you guys as I have had quite a mixed response from family and friends.

So....are you having one? Where from? Or are they completely cheeky?

I dont want to offend anyone by making them think that we are assuming they will buy us something because were not, I would be happy just for everyone to turn up!

On the other hand though, if people DO want to get us something it just makes sense to me that it should be something that we actually want/ need?

Is that awful? Ha

Any advice/ opinions appreciated

We had the same dilemma - hated the concept of a gift list but knew how much of a god-send they were when buying for someone else's wedding, particularly if you don't know their style of decor or whatever (also wanting to avoid one absolutely hideous present my parents got for their wedding present!?). In the end we plumped for setting up a list with Amazon (very easy peasy and they sell just about everything you could ever wish for, suitable for a variety of budgets) but not included the information with the invitations - that way if people want to know if there's a gift list they'll ask either us or our mums and if they'd rather do their own thing and go "off-list" or with vouchers they can do that too.

Means no one is offended by the inclusion of a list - if they're asking if we've got one they're obviously quite ok with the concept.

We havent done one but thats mainly because we dont really need anything homely or as a couple so it would be filled with nice things that we want but dont need and clothes and jewellery and stuff, which I think is wrong. I think if you one it needs to be stuff for building a home not personal stuff.

I would definitely agree with that. Just about everything on ours is stuff for the house - we've been living together for a year so we do have most of the things you'd normally have on a list but what we've got is generally Morrisons "First Home" range or really cheap and cheerful stuff so what's on the list is sort of like "upgrades" - yes our £3 Asda kettle still works but it's a bit grubby and the lid doesn't fit very well so we've got a half decent kettle and toaster on the list, that sort of thing. MIL2B has even told us off for being too practical and putting a spatula on the list!

Thanks for the replies! I wouldnt dare to ask for personal stuff! It would just be things for our flat. We are currently renting and want to buy a house after the wedding so it would all be things that we could take across to the new house with us!

Can you imagine if we got one at Debenhams for example and starting putting clothes and jewellery on it! Ha! Now that IS cheeky!

Teehee are your vouchers for anywhere in particular?

We got about 200 bucks for a local dept store so we hit its kitchen dept! That was the biggest amount, We also got marks n spencers, local china/ornamental shop, Dunelm Mill, B&Q, a fair amount from Debenhams, Boots and with the cash we recieved, we have bought an extending dining table, chairs and a 4ft x 4 ft mirror!

Meant to add originally - though we asked for vouchers guests were told 'If you see something you think we'd like then by all means, buy that.'

we got bookends, clock, photo frames, sheets, cushion covers, figuirine, towels, dinner set..... etc. Good housey stuff!

After looking at John Lewis and Debenhams we have also decided to go with Amazon for a list. It's much easier to use and you get more variety at a better price. I hated the idea of a guest list too although H2B likes them. We compromised and on our information insert just wrote 'gift list available on request.' That way people knew there was one, but hopefully didn't feel obliged to run with it.

I was thinking about asking for love2travel vouchers which we could used towards our honeymoon in July next year.

Other than that it will be vouchers for Debenhams, Marks & Spencers etc but I like TeeHee's idea of saying if you see anything you think we'll like buy it cos I know some people don't like giving vouchers as a gift.

    For us - a gift list is a no-no.

The one thing I really hate about them/gifts in general is when people put on information sheets saying "we want your presence not your presents - however if you want to get us something then we would like X". Now to me, they've asked for something specific so they do want something so it's completly hipocritical!

We're not mentioning gifts at all. I understand people will want to buy us something and we can't stop them but that's up to them.
