What did you match your colour scheme too?

Jemima Renrut, 6 September, 2012 at 23:00 Posted on Planning 0 24

I'm struggling to decide on a colour scheme, everything I choose I change my mind. I want to buy something so I can stick to it, however it cant be the bridesmaid dresses as one is pregnant so don't know what will fit.

If anyone wants to inspire me I'm marrying in a church, then reception on an old farm. I'd like a bouquet tied with rafia, and was thinking of doing something farm related in the theme, just details like corn in centre pieces etc.

I'm toying with red, navy, plum.. want a colour colour not chocolate etc, but nothing too bright. and I dont mind orange detail but not main colour... its an autumn wedding...

sorry tangent... so where did you get your inspiration?

(other half aint fussed just wants me to make mind up!)

Thanks!

Not much help, but my best mate chose a dress and that sort of set the colour theme. Annoyingly, I wanted lavender colours, but she picked a very bright teal blue - almost turquoise. Still, it saved me having to decide for myself, and people said it looked good on the day!

For a farm wedding, what about plum with burnt orange accents - that will go nicely with corn, especially for a late summer or autumn wedding.

My OH is Scottish and is wearing a kilt so I am one of the few brides whose colour scheme is being determined by the groom! Thankfully, he is 99% certain that he wants a blue kilt, so it looks like our colour scheme is a sapphire blue which I'm really happy with! If it was down to me I would have picked grey/silver bridesmaids dresses but I'm including hints of grey in the flowers as it will look lovely with the blue.

I love the idea of plum colours! (and of course you get the thumbs up from me for navy!)

I was a bit the same when it same to deciding the 'theme' for my wedding, I wasn't quite sure which way to go, but some gorgeous wallpaper finally inspired me (OH not fussed!).

I dont want a ridgid colour scheme and the wallpaper is lots of muted shades with hummingbirds on, so its going to be a bit of a pastel free for all!?

We wanted blue, as it's our favourite colour. Originally it was going to be midnight blue, but then my cousin got married this summer and had that exact colour scheme so we didn't want people (my slightly judgy Gran!) comparing the two weddings. So we switched it up to royal blue, nice and bright! We've also got just a hint of rainbow because my OH loves bright colours - each usher (and my OH) will have a different coloured pair of socks, and my flowers are blue, pink and purple.

So, on that note, as far as your wedding goes, why not chose a couple of colours? Going for an "autumn palette" would look gorgeous. Red, navy, plum and a dark, burnt orange sound lovely together, maybe have plum dresses with navy sashes? If you pick up a copy of the latest wedding ideas magazine (ie my bible, I love it haha) there's quite a lot on autumn weddings, might help give you the inspiration you need ?

Purple & burnt orange would be stunning for an autumn wedding. I know one bm is pregnant but you can still choose a colour that would suit them all. I got mine (navy blue) from Coast, they've got a fantastic selection so it might be worth (if its easy) taking your bm's there just to see what colours suit. You don't have to buy them there & then, but it means you can settle on a colour xx

I had it in my mind that i wanted royal blue and white, but we were sat down after we booked the venue and OH gave me a bar of my favourite chocolate - cadbury dairy milk, so now we are having the cadbury purple as the main colour.

I knew I wanted red roses at my wedding and then after looking and flowers/dresses I went with the burgundy red and am picking everything around that.

My colour scheme was pretty much dictated by our venue, which had a very strong decorative theme. Anything that wasn't white/ivory/pale pink/purple/red/gold was pretty much out - something like royal blue would have looked ridiculous. However, given that I chose the venue for the way it looked, I was clearly down with those colours anyway. In the end, everything I had was a mix of these, excluding any purple (not my thing) and tending to the pale gold/pale pink end of the spectrum.

Furthermore, the decoration in my venue defined the style of the wedding as well. Vintage/rustic/modern were all out with art deco/Parisien glam the order of the day. Again, I didn't feel hemmed in by this; I picked the venue because that's what I wanted.

I think that sounds lovely. I'm a massive fan (see above) of complimenting the venue. If you picked a farm-style venue because you love it, then surely the natural thing to do is show that in your chosen colours/theme. Rustic is your friend here - raffia, grasses, hessian, warm peachy colours, some greenery. Obviously, some venues are blank canvases which can have very strong themes stamped on them but a farm needs a bit of a nod to its style!

We had purple and orange too. I knew I wanted orange roses and a google search showed them with some purple dresses, which I thought looked really nice. We then got the bridesmaid dresses and matched all other stuff to that if we could. I know cadbury purple has been done to death but I'm hoping the orange made it look a bit different.

WSS. I think a plummy / aubergine colour would look really nice. I love the idea of the corn - as it is an autumn wedding, maybe you could use pumpkins too? Not carved Hallowe'en style, but all the different types you can get in all the wonderful colours and sizes. Hay bales on the floor would look good too.

I don't have a colour scheme yet (get married in Feb!) OH is wearing his family tartan which is a pinky red so won't be matching to that!

The room is very neutral and I'm going for white tables and the only colour will be the flowers. I'm hoping to have tulips or something bright as both a bouquet and the table flowers. Bridesmaid needs a dress so we'll hopefully find something colourful and then will possibly get dads / best man a cravatte to match the bridesmaid

Invites are vistaprint and a funky grey / black. They won't co-ordinate with anything else but I don't care!

Use a colour that a) you like and b) how much time effort you are prepared to spend creating / co-ordinating your day

When I was searching on google images I came across a white and champagne theme which I thought was subtle and really liked it. On our first venue visit it had a bright red wall in the dining room, but the co-ordinator told us they were having a massive refurb and it was going to knocked out and extended and be neutral with lots of glass and brown highlights so it made sense to have a champagne and chocolate colour scheme.

I'm not actually having a theme. I've just picked things in the colours I like but none of it matches. I'm hoping it will look ok on the day.......

Me too! I've more gone for a "look" than a colour theme as such...like someone else said, I've tied in with the look of my venue (a barn).

My theme is teal, we're getting arried in Autumn too so this is a nice colour for this time of year. I'm having pale pink with mine, but I have seen photos of teal dresses with flowers in oranges and burnt reddy colours and it looks amazing together! xxx

Thanks guys, I never thought of having a mix of colours, thought I needed one main one and then maybe another for details, doing this would keep me flexible on picking my bridesmaids dresses later, will just have to get creative!

Definitely working my farm venue. And thanks for the plum, I had been googling autumn but it was all orange orange orange! and was reluctant to have purple as my friend just had cadbury but been googling and plum/aubergine would give a different look to hers. I like what I've seen.

And on the pumpkins note, one of our friends suggested this, I immediately thought halloween but if they can be done weddingy then my OH quite liked the pumpkin idea so that can be sumat for him lol. I will have to google this.

and as for all you ladies with no strict colour theme you have filled me with hope and think I need to stop worrying about it so much!

    Thanks for all your input!

I would be wary about choosing a colour scheme until you have your BM dresses. I say this because I had such a job finding a dress that suited all of my BMs that I had to change my colour scheme from silver to plum to fuschia in the end. It may not be such an issue for you if you only have 1 or 2 BMs but I have 4 and the first dress we all agreed on ended up not being long enough for my tall CBM.

Even if you decide a general colour theme in advance of BM dresses you don't want things to end up being different shades and not quite match. You don't really need to decide on colour scheme until you buy your BM dresses or start thinking about invitations anyway...

I would definitely choose more than one colour. We have gone with raw umber, burgundy, forest green, antique pink, and shale. A good mix of shades and hues.

If you're having trouble picturing colours together, I've just come across a great website, and here are a few good autumnal ideas:

    http://www.theperfectpalette.com/2012/08/apple-orchard-i-dos-cranberry-red-latte.html

    http://www.theperfectpalette.com/2012/06/derby-days-shades-of-brown-white.html

    http://www.theperfectpalette.com/2012/03/citrus-soiree-shades-of-orange-gray.html

    http://www.theperfectpalette.com/2011/11/autumn-elegance-wedding-palette-of-navy.html

    http://www.theperfectpalette.com/2011/11/autumn-picnic-palette-of-cranberry.html

And if you pick one colour, you can always search by that colour to find good colours to put together with it!

Plum and burnt orange is a great idea. If you want to buy BMW dresses from high st you are a bit stuck. If you know you can buy from dressy etc you could pick the colour now, get a sample then choose the actual dress style later. I was picturing a variety of squash and the purpley corn on the cobs either in centrepieces or around the room. Your wedding is going to be gorgeous!

I knew I wanted some sparkly reindeers I had found in Next, there were available in lots of colours, so I said "lets see what colour they have in the sale". They only had grey, so that's our colour scheme! Maybe think of something you really want and find out what colour it's available in - such as flowers or table centrepieces - and it may help you come up with something
