...and are you doing anything remotely similar now? Is there a nosey cow icon?

I wanted to be an optician for quite some time but I think the head dissection thing put me off. Once I was in my teens I knew I wanted to do a PhD but hadn't thought much beyond that.

I'm now a science communicator (and did get that PhD)

I wanted to be a clinical perfusionist when I was little, but actually became a full-time medieval re-enactor

I wanted to be a nurse, but specifically a theatre nurse (watched too many episodes of Jimmys!). Later wanted to be a forensic psychologist.

Now working as a PA / Admin Manager in a hospital, so not massively similar but same sector at least

Well I wanted to be either something to do with Geography an architect or a building surveyor, but I never actually got to uni so that never happened. I did to a C&G in architectural autocad when I was working in the MoD but didnt take it any further.

Ive also always had an interest in maps and cartography and worked as a planner in HM Land Registry for about 5 years, then moved to the Welsh Assembly to Education of all places...... however Im back working with maps again in the Boundary Commission for Wales, so Im kinda of doing something that I wanted to do many years ago.

Id still like a shot at surveying though or alternativaly cartography, however both would mean going to uni and tbh, I cant imagine spending 3 years as a student now to get there!

I wanted to be a doctor or a pilot. I am actually an accountant. I now wish I was something like a physiotherapist.

I really wanted to be an air hostess, instead I meandered into IT programming.

Not much of a difference there then. ?

I wanted to be a ballet dancer. Thank god I gave it all up at the age of 13 before I really ruined my feet! Am waiting for high heels to do all the damage now ?

There was no head dissection when I started my optometry training. Which I decided to do after wanting to be a vet, then doctor, then loving boys and alcohol too much and not likely to get the grades.

I dropped out of the optometry degree after a year though (skin cells under a microscope are dull, I'd prefer the disection) did an engineering degree, and now work in road safety!

I wanted to be a Vet. Then after doing my GCSE Human Biology I decided I would rather like to be a Genetic Engineer as I found it really interesting. After getting an E in biology, and an F in physics I came to the conclusion that it wasn't really the career for me (I was too fick). I am now working for a large multinational company within the accounts payable department.

I still pine for a career with animals though.

I wanted to be either a professional musician or I wanted to be a bank manager. Nearly went to music college but decided to study banking and finance instead and did become a manager in a bank (not the same thing that I had in mind though). Then I got bored of being shafted and started my own business which is completely different to both of these things.

I wanted to be a teacher when I was at primary school, and as a teenager I wanted to be Prime Minister ?. I still think I'd be an excellent PM, but I'm happy as a philosopher (so rather closer to my early childhood ambition).

Well, the Labour Party is desperately looking for a plausible replacement right now, so why not put your name forward?

(I suppose I can think of a few reasons: massive and intrusive publicity, near-certain electoral humiliation and a job that no sane person would want to take on at the moment, but there might be an upside)

I remember playing at teachers alot as a kid, and I've always thought social work would be fascinating.

My school teachers took the 'interested in people' thing and ran with it; I am now a junior doctor, and thankfully, absolutely love it.

When I was a young kid I wanted to be a mechanic or a pilot - but I am shocklingly bad at science and maths and I can break something by looking at it ? When I was a teenager I wanted to be Counselling Phsychologist, but I didn't get the grades at A- level.

I'm an Events Coordinator/Duty Manager in a hotel, which is nothing like anything I ever wanted to be and I'm still not really sure if I want to continue with it.

I never could make a decision about anything.

I had thought there might be a job vacancy there, Mr JK - I think they might as well take a chance on me (although I did resign my membership of the party in disgust over the 42-day detention plans).

I was actually chatting to my H yesterday about my earlier political ambitions - given that I am now around the right kind of age to be put forward as a PPC (though not for a winnable seat), it's a good job I didn't go down that route really!

I come from a ridiculously political family (two Cabinet ministers, a party vice-chair and a very senior Foreign Office diplomat*), which is why I stayed well clear!

(*) none of them current, and two long dead

I used to want to be a vet, or a Dr. I went off being a vet when I realised that it wouldn't really be much like All Creatures Great and Small these days, and that I'd have to deal with animal poo, being bitten, scratched etc! I went off the idea of being a Dr cos I didn't want to study chemistry, plus I'd have to spend another 4+ yrs training on virtually no money, and the shifts aren't so compatible with family life.

As it is, I am about to start a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, so will be a Dr of sorts in 3 yrs, just not a medical one!?

Oh, I did also want to be Prime Minister at one point....................................hmmmm don't think I fancy that mucvh now either and prob have too many skeletons in the closet!?

At primary school, I wanted to be a Maths teacher.

At secondary school, I wanted to be a lawyer, specialising in European Law.

I'm an IT Process Management Administrator (general dogsbody), so neither did what I wanted to do, nor fulfilled my potential.

I'm currently dreaming of jacking my full-time job in to become a photographer, though.

I wanted to be a groom for someone like John Whitaker - this probably came from reading Horse & Pony magazine every week. Then my ambition went up and I wanted to be a professional event rider, but didn't really have enough money or connections to be serious (or talent if I'm being brutally honest).

I then decided thaat I was going to be a vet (thanks Vet School!) but after about 6 weeks of Chemistry, Biology and Physics A levels I realised that getting 3 As was definitely not within the realms of possibility.

I'm a low level section of a department type manager now, which works ok for me - it pays the mortgage and is only 20 mins from home. I'd really like to be a farmer though - I would love to move to North Yorkshire and have a herd of dexters.

I always liked Alan Clark's response to a question about skeletons in the cupboard when he was up for selection for Kensington & Chelsea - "I can hardly get the door shut". It got a big laugh, and he was duly selected.

Boris Johnson had a similar experience - he was asked the same question, and he said no, and then someone stood up, called him a liar and said "what about the time you offered to arrange to have someone beaten up?" Boris replied "Well, since that particular accusation was aired on Have I Got News For You in front of millions, it's hardly a dark secret!" He was also selected.

And then, slap bang in the middle of the "back to basics" row, it was revealed that Stephen Norris had five mistresses. Instead of cowering and offering to resign, he said something to the effect of "Yeah, what of it? You jealous?" and survived.

There's a moral here somewhere, but I can't for the life of me work out what it is... ?

When I was three I told my doctor I wanted to be a butterfly, he patted me on the head and said "thats a shame"?

I wanted to be an archeaologist and then a nurse *just a slight change*. I was a student nurse and am hopefully going back to university in january to restart my training.

This is almost certainly bollocks, but Stephen Fry once claimed that his school careers officer pushed him towards his chosen profession.

He went for an interview, without the faintest idea of what he wanted to do, and looked around the careers officer's office, decided it looked pretty cushy, and said "I'd like to be a school careers officer please".

The careers officer wrote 'Comedian' on the form - and Fry never looked back.
