WHat do you drive and why?

Storky, 20 July, 2012 at 14:43 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 67

We're in the process of choosing a new car and I wondered what you drive, and why you chose that car.

What would you like to be driving? What's your money-no-object choice too - would you go classic beauty, performance super car or something else?

Despite a couple of questions in just a few days, I'm not a huge car person. How about you?

I drive a Mini Cooper Diesel called Geoffrey. Chosen because I love Minis and they are very cheap to run considering how much mileage I've been doing.

If I had enough dosh, I'd purchase an old Jaguar Mark 2 (as my weekend car) and my every day car would be a Bentley GT. A more achievable car target would be a Mini Countryman - love 'em, however Mr S thinks they look like ridiculous inflated Minis.

Here's our monster (not ours but the same, if you know what I mean):

It's a Mazda RX-8 PZ (so basically a Prodrive tuned Mazda RX-8). 230 bhp, rock-hard suspension, funky handbrake lever, screams like a b*tch when you floor it. It makes you want to to whoop, it's ace. To compare and contrast with Spangler's stats above, this car does a whopping 15 miles per gallon, needs the oil topped up every month and costs £450 a year to tax. What a bargain Smiley winking

A super car. A Veyron. Maybe a Gallardo or a Zonda would suffice!

I am a car freak. ETA: my heart is racing just thinking about it all!

Oooh, two more questions (fanx already to Spangler and Footlong).

What does your car say about you?

Why should I buy your car?

Because it will make you do a wee as you do 0-60 in 6 seconds!

Also, very practical for children. It has back doors and everything. ?

I drive a little Renault Clio which i chose because it does a whopping 58-60 mpg!! What with fuel prices at a premium high and doing an average 65 miles a day, this was the one for me.

However, If money was no object a Range Rover Sport, or a bentley and maybe this as a little run around cos its a funky little car

Pictures of Range Rover or Bentley not showing ☹️

Ooh we had one of these Footlong, but we had the white anniversary edition. We loved it but it was rubbish in the snow (as we found out on our New Year trip to Fort William)!! OH used to drive like a crazy person in it. The back doors were cool, but only as long as the person in front remember to leave their door open first to let you out ? - He probably did it on purpose!!

Now OH has an automatic VW Jetta and I have a Ford Ka, mine is just for going from A to B and was good value for what we got. OH's is a company car, and I wanted to get a nice family car and not onoe that encouraged him to drive like a loon! He has since changed jobs and has the opportunity to get a Range Rover Evoque which I am keen on but we couldn't justify the need for a monster like that.

In an ideal world OH would have a BMW 6 series and I would have an Audi R8 ?

I drive a W reg Peugot 206. Because it was a good price when I bought it. That is the sole reason. I have no interest in cars whatsoever and as long as it gets me from A to B comfortably, that's all that matters to me.

Having said that, if I won the lottery, I'd buy a mini or a beetle. Just because they're pretty.

I drive a vauxhall corsa called charles (currently complete with mushroom farm) My dad bought me this as my first car and I haven't needed to upgrade as I use smelly public transport to commute.

Why should I buy this car? - you shouldn't, it leaks and grows mushrooms.

What does my car say about me? - I am disgusting.

If I was going to buy a car tomorrow it would be an audi A3 convertible or a vauxhall tigra because I really want a convertible and something small and fun before i have kids and have to be sinsible. If money was no object I would have a Bentley (tis my surname) or a lambo - or both.

I drive a pretty old Renault Clio, I've had it since new, it's boring but reliable. Plus, really cheap to run.

We also jointly own a lotus Elise, it's totally impractical for anything other than having fun. Tiny boot, no back seats, really hard to get in and out of (no skirts or dresses can be worn)!

It is so much fun to drive though, it's really fast but pretty economical for a sports car, it's got a soft top and a hard top so we can use it all year round except in snow. Plus the insurance is only the same cost as my Clio!

Not sure what either of them say about me, but they are pretty different cars so maybe that I'm odd?!

I drive a 6 year old Nissan Micra called Baby Bigglesworth. It is very economical and reliable.

Given a choice I'd have a VW camper van and a Morgan.

What does this say about me? Sad old hippy with no money, I think!

it's costing an extra £700 to have the BMW in black.

The blue Mazda goes with nothing I wear, whereas the BMW will be perfectly co-ordinated. ?

I drive a 2010 VW Golf. It's practical and comfortable which when you drive 110 miles a day at least is something you have to consider. It's not fancy in any way but I quite like it. It's a company car so I don't have that much choice, if I hadn't have had the Golf I could have chosen from an Astra, Passat or Insignia but I find Vauxhalls make my back ache.

I'm not really a car person to be honest but I do like the look of an Audi A5

I currently have a ford fiesta. I have no interest in cars - this one was simply a suitable price, milage and takes diesel so more ecconomical for all the driving I did in my old job. It also costs £30 to tax which is good. It has five doors and is big enough for a couple of kids but small enough for me to feel I'm not driving a big car.

I used to have a ford KA which I loved as it was bright yellow and round and I saved up fricking hard to get it. Until some idiot decided to play bumper cars on the motorway. I suspect my KA is the only time I will have a great interest or affection for a car.

Really interesting, thank you! ? to the mushrooms growing though!

Footlong, you seem to know your stuff! What would you suggest if the requirements were fun, convertible, not too small inside and something bigger with a higher driving position and a fair bit of room? Not R* money but a decent budget. Don't fancy a BMW.

I have a 59 plate light blue 1.4 8v Fiat Grande Punto by the name of Charlie Oscar.

It does about 50mpg on a good day, It'll be cheap to repair when it breaks down (because let's face it, Fiat's are reknown for it) I have a love for Fiats, i don't really know why. We always joke that our car is the poor mans Alfa Romeo.

If i could have any car in the world, i'd probably have a Panda 4x4 as they are so cute looking and the new ones have got next to no road tax too! (all about saving money)

What my car says about me? - I'd like to think it says that i'm a simple creature who doesn't do fancy cars!

Why should you buy my car? - Well, Fiat's aren't for everyone, but they are cheap to fix if and when they break down, they're pretty cheap to tax and if you really like the faster versions, you can get an Grande Punto Evo!

Fun = small! Big and convertible are an interesting combination, simply because a lot of a car's rigidity comes from the roof, so without one and with front end a mile from the back, you need a whole lot of kit to make it good. You're not going to get one with an especially high driving position but you can get them with normal (as opposed to low slung) positions. Something like an Audi A6 might be up your street but that definitely luxury cruising rather than skidding fun. I think the Audi RS4 comes as a convertible, not cheap in any way but with 400 odd bhp, you'll get some fun out of it alright.

The problem you have is that manufacturers don't tend to combine performance and no roof (because saloons are more efficient and lighter).

Just asked Boy, he says RS4. He can dream on.

I love my CAR! (upto the accident in the taxi - feel abit shaky still but will get to love it 100%) brilliant fun, top roadster according to Top Gear and I love it - can't believe I can actually get the roof down this weekend finally lol - got it last year new. This is exactly my model and colour

Hubby has a 3month old (opted out co car) Jag XF in Black its gorgeous and looks lovely

I may go for another MX5 when its due up in 18 months but I might swap for a Mini Cooper Convertible (depends how I feel re shaky) - worried about my visual awareness.

Money no object - Aston Martin or Zonda would be lovely!

Super, thank you! What would he/you recommend in terms of a larger, more grown up car (hard top). Think full of camping gear, a dog, driving over farmland type purpose. Comfy seats, great driving position.

There's a new Golf GTI cabriolet just out, looks fab, will never break (nor devalue), GTIs always fun. I retract any other recommendations forthwith. It's lush.
