What do you think?

Luna_12, 12 June, 2011 at 21:08 Posted on Planning 0 5

Me and OH are hoping to get married in October 2012. The place we are looking at and all other bits and bobs mean we will have a budget of around £6500.

We should be able to do this but it will be a strugle. My parents have suggested having a small family affair at the local town hall instead and then having a marquee in the family garden which is huge. They have said this would be cheaper and we could do it in the summertime rather than waiting until October.

Im worried the cost of a marquee and the furniture needed inside it will cost as much as hiring somewhere.

What do you think?

Hmmmm, we looked at a marquee to go in the grounds where we're getting married and they can be really pricey. We were being quoted prices of anywhere between £2000 and £5000. I don't think you'll save a lot doing it that way if you know you can do it for a budget of £6500 anyway. I think you have to go with what you'll be happiest with too. Money is important but it's not the be all and end all. If you think you can manage it do what you'll enjoy most x

Marquees actually work out quite expensive I believe, plus there are many other things you will need that you may not immediately think of, e.g. portaloos, heating, lighting, crockery/tables/chairs/linen/cutlery (although you might get a package deal for these with caterers)... if the ground is not very flat you might need some kind of extra flooring etc.

Why not contact some local companies and get an initial quote or estimate? That would at least settle the price angle.

Our budget is around 7k, we are hiring a local cricket club (£650), tables and chairs for 50 people (£370) and for our food we're having a hog roast, which includes canapes, main, dessert, coffee and mints, then an evening buffet, all for £1500. Oh and our wedding is september.

Shop around and get some quotes, i wouldn't start worrying until you have heard some solid quotes, plus haggle!!!

Thanks everyone. It probably sounds really silly but I just want to get organised. Its hopefully just over a year away, I need to get my backside into gear ?

No not silly at all. I got engaged 2 years before the date and by 18 months I'd already started booking things. Good to be organised!
