What is your opinion..... Numbers of bridesmaids & groomsmen

Jay-Low, 5 October, 2010 at 17:37 Posted on Planning 0 26

Hi all!

I've been a bit absent for a short while as all is a bit quiet on the wedding planning front for me for a while but thought I'd pop back to spark up some discussion!

My sis went to a friends wedding recently and she was showing me the pics - mainly because they had the same colour scheme as me and H2B are having. The couple had 8 bridesmaids and 11 (yes 11!!) groomsmen....

... what do you think about this - nice if you can afford it, OTT, tacky, etc??????

Would love to know what everyone else thinks because I had a knee-jerk reaction to it and would like to know if I'm in the majority/minority!!

Well that is way too many for me but I can see how people might end up with that many if they have big families or a large circle of friends.

One wedding I went to also had huge numbers of BMs and ushers , but it was a big wedding so the general guests just kind of soaked them up, lol. If it was a small do though it would look very odd! How many people were at teh wedding in total?

Oh my! I think too many - Im not happy with the amount im having to be honest! I wanted two! I've got five!!!! but it all got difficult as I've got 2 small nieces (14yrs and 5yrs) and OH has a younger sister (14yrs). But then I wanted my sis and OH has another sis and would have been really harsh to leave her outso i have 5!!!

Think ushers will be four plus BM!

    it's RIDICULOUS!

My sis guessed about 100?? I thought it was a bit OTT and it must have been sooo expensive. Even if all the men hired suits, with 11 of them it must have been pushing £1000 for their suits and button holes.

    We currently have:

Chief Bridesmaid (b2b's sister), bridesmaid 1 (old school friend), bridesmaid 2 (brother's fiancee), flower girl (bridesmaid 1's daughter, 8).

Best man (my best friend), Usher 1 (chief bridesmaid's husband), Usher 2 (b2b's brother), ring boy (bridesmaid 1's son, 6)

    Total: 8

It seems to work for us - although as my parents are divorced and with new partners that's 16 for the top table if the 2 kids sit there - although they'll probably go and sit at another table with bridesmaid 1's husband (who hopefully will be in charge of stopping and starting the music during our ceremony.

Well, if you're paying out for people to come to your wedding, you might as well make the most of them ...

Invite-wise, if everyone comes we're looking at 175 or so ... but we only sent the invites out this morning. Gave them out at work too and had one positive reply so far...

Wow yes, it must cost a small fortune! We are having 2 bridesmaids, 1 best man and 2 ushers and that is plenty for us. I will be nervous on the morning and don't want a huge circus flapping round me! But then some people will want lots of people around for comfort. Each to their own, I guess!

I personally think that more than a handful is a bit OTT, but each to their own, if you want all your friends and relatives as BMs and can afford the dresses then go for it. I've seen weddings where there are so many bridesmaids they virtually fill the aisle in a church, but I'd limit it to 4 or 5 max. I've never understood the need for 'groomsmen' either, surely a best man and ushers are enough? What exactly are groomsmen anyway, other than the groom's equivalent of bridesmaids?

We're having my niece as BM, my son as man of honour, OH's sister as best person and my nephew as usher. That makes 8 on the top table - me, OH, his parents, my mum, OH's sister, and 2 BMs - nephew sits with his mum.

    I'm in a bit of a dilemma...

So far in my head the list is: 3 BMs and 2FGs... Then my brother and OH's BIL as ushers, plus best man

But the problem is, I have two best friends a girlie one (my CBM) and then a blokey one. Now obv if he was a girl then he would be a BM, so what do I do with him?? I'd love him to have a role. Plus I'd love my CBM's hubby to be an official part of the wedding party as he's a good friend. Any ideas??

personally i think it is a wee bit tacky. I thik that the bridal party is suppossed to be the ppl in the world closest to the couple. But thats my opinion!! I suppose if you are good friends with a lot of people and can afford it, and have a really long song to come into the church it would be possible.

Thats why the title of 'man of honour' was invented - so blokes could be 'bridesmaids' without being girls! Apparently ALL the celebs are doing it...it's either that or doggie bridesmaids!

My opinion is that those roles are for people you are really close too.

i know some people have relative who think that certain people should have a role which is often how people end up with loads.

i have 3 bridesmaids(my niece, and 2 best friends (one of which introduced me and OH!)) plus 2 flowe girls (OH's god daughters/best man's daughters)

then ~OH has his BM and 2 ushers (one a very close friend and the other his BIL who is pretty much a brother to him and almost a substitute father)

a bit sad but i like the fact we have 3 bridesmaids and 3 'groomsmen', will work out nicely for photos!! ?

I would have loved to have had more but we just couldn't afford it.

I would have had both our sisters and all our nieces as BM's so 8 in total and all our brothers and nephews as pageboys / ushers so that would have been 6. As well as OH's 2 BM.

But in the real world we're having our two sisters as BM's, OH daughter as flowergirl and OH has a best man and a best woman. At least it'll be an even number on both sides.

That does seem rather a lot!

I'm having one bridesmaid - my sister. We're also having a best man, 2 ushers and my OH's son is going to be a mini usher. My best friend is my unofficial second bridesmaid... she's helping with the hen do and taking our evening photos.

Think it does depend on the size of the wedding though - we're only having 45 people to the day. x

    Morning,

We are having quite a smallish wedding about 60 day time adult guests, and the bridal party is reflecting this. We have decided on 1 CBM (My sister), two page boys (our 2 year old twins), 1 flower girl (h2b 2 Year old Neice) and 1 Best Man (H2B Brother in law).

    This screams 'America!' to me!

I think too many looks daft unless you're having some sort of huge society wedding and, even then, that's what staff are for!

We've got 3 bridesmaids and 3 ushers. No more for us.

Not sure what you could find for all those people to do tbh! Ours was a very small wedding - about 35 people during the day - and we had 1 bridesmaid, 1 best man and one flower girl. I even had to be persuaded on the flower girl as I didn't really understand the concept (what are they supposed to do?) but she's OH's goddaughter and was so excited god bless her. She looked fab and I'm really glad she was involved - although her involvement was limited to wearing a pretty frock, walking down the aisle in front of me and being in the "bridal party" photos.

My brothers ended up doing what I suppose you would call ushers' duties but were never officially made ushers IYSWIM, just guests with extra duties - a couple of days before I just said to them "would one of you mind working the stereo and the other handing out the OOSs" Wedding was small enough no one needed shown where to sit - find a chair and park your bottom on it!

I have 2 little bridesmaids (my nieces), two big bridesmaids (OH sister and my sister) and a Maid of Honour. We have one best man and two ushers (OH's friend and brother in law), and a page boy who will be nearly 3. I can see how people can have loads of bridesmaids and ushers. At the wedding we went to a couple of weeks ago, the bride and groom both had lots of siblings, so it all adds up if you want them to have a role. 8 and 11 does seem to be an awful lot, I don't know how you'd keep track! x

My plan was just to have adults so i chose 1 MOH and 2 BM's.. Then realised we cant have a traditional top table because of OH's family.. so we thought we would have us and our bridesmaids ect on top table.. so to balance it out we decided OH to have his best man and 2 ushers.. then we added another usher and bridesmaid.. still fine ... then my mother put her foot in it asking what my 4 yr old niece is wearing as her bridesmaid dres..? .(uhh shes not!!).. lol.. so then i had to have OH's niece and nephew too.. so all in all... 8 adults and 3 kiddies.. lol.. and its only a smallish wedding..

but each to thier own i say.. its your wedding have what you want Smiley smile x

I think it's a personal choice really. If 8 bridesmaids and 11 ushers was right for them, then so be it. It's no skin off my nose!

I have 4 bridesmaids; MOH is my oldest friend, bridesmaid a is my best friend from uni, bridesmaid b is h2b's brother's wife (who has been my no1 source of advice on wedding stuff so far!) and bridesmaid c is h2b's sister. I also have my daughter as flower girl.

H2b has a Best Woman, his brother, my brother and his two best mates as ushers, plus our sons are mini-ushers (which pretty much means they'll get to wear a coordinating suit and generally feel important, lol).
