What job would you do if you had the chance again?

Duckford20, 30 June, 2012 at 17:07 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 38

Don't get me wrong I love my job...however the work/life balance is not what I expected when I started Uni at 18! I start 3 night shifts tonight and am feeling miserable about them....so if you had the chance again what job would you do?

Hmmm it's difficult because I want different things now.

My career used to be important to me (I'm in marketing) but it's not anymore.

If money were no object I'd own kennels or something where I could be with dogs all day.

I honestly don't know what I'd rather do in a world where money matters (i.e. this one!).

    What would you do?

Sensible: meteorologist - I'd love to know more about how weather works Smiley smile

Unrealistic: tea shop owner, but I'd eat all the cakes!

In my younger, fitter, slimmer days I did 2 seasons as a redcoat at Butlins in Skeggy and one as a Havenmate in Cornwall. I would love to go and do that again, but I am too old/fat/miserable/lazy now, plus my poorly liver would never stand that amount of drinking again. :-/

Realistically, I would love to open my own cafe, but I fear I lack the motivation to make it happen.

I've always liked the idea of being a doctor, but I'm not clever enough and I'm too squeamish! I'd love to do some kind of criminal profiling but it's probably not the same as it is on Criminal Minds. And I would like to write books.

I'd do anything with a proper title, doctor, lawyer, accountant. Probably accountant if I were starting again. Not an operations supervisor where I stay in the job because they pay me far too well for the job, and I'm stuck as I won't/can't take a 66% pay cut to retrain, but I'm bored bored bored.

I'm another one who ended up in marketing because i didn't know what else to do! i do't mind my current job but have no aspirations to be say a marketing director or anything, so my salary is unlikely to go much higher than it is now.

I wish i'd been something like an interior designer or even something manual like a painter decorator/carpenter as would like to be my own boss but not stuck in an office!!

Well when I left school I dreamed of being a top chef in central London so started working my way up that path and soon realised working 70 stressful hours per weeks with no social life was not for me and felt it was very much a young persons job although did love working in a kitchen.

So I took a huge pay cut and took on a trainee job while going to uni to retrain, lived on a shoe string (well mainly plain pasta as that's all I could afford) and now a fully fledged Food Hygiene Inspector/Food safety consultant which i adore.

However I would also love to be a Hotel Inspector travelling all around the world/country to stay in plush hotels dine in nice restaurants check out spa facilities etc - I do inspect hotels now but sadly the food hygiene side of things is not quite so glamorous.

I always wanted to be a firefighter.

Ive never wanted a fancy career. My job deff needs to be hands on. Could never sit at a desk for 10 hrs a day.

The hours wouldnt suit my family but in an ideal world I'd love to try it.

Its funny because my 5 year old son is desperate to be a firefighter, he has no idea that was my dream too. Hope his dreams come true ?

I wanted to be a firefighter. Being 5'4" and asthmatic stood in my way.

I trained as a dancer and and actress, that was my realistic dream.

    Humph. I work in hr.

Not sure. I made the choices I made for good reasons at the time, and I am happy with my life the way it is. I wasn't always sure I wanted children but I knew that if I did have them then I would want to have them young. If I had decided to go for a more 'high-powered' job I wouldn't be able to be where I am now in that respect, I would most likely still be training or needing to put in long hours/get a foot in the door.

Also I am a lazy moo and don't actually want to work hard, so I quite enjoy my job which in all honesty is not that stressful and which I can forget about when I walk out the door, if I want to. I would like to climb up a grade or two, but also I genuinely enjoy interacting with the students and I would miss that if I climbed too high up the ladder.

    I'm a lowly shop assistant!

I always wanted to be a doctor with a high powered career. Went through a bit of a tough time personally and left school. I'm so glad i did as i met my now husband a few months later, and now we're married and have a mortgage, nice house etc. All of my friends are graduating with student loans and starting fresh, so i'm actually happy i've done things this way.

I am at college doing Admin and IT which I love, not sure career wise where i'm going but I'm not all that ambitious to climb to the top of any ladders. I want a family in the future and I make no secret of that. Its 100% different an answer if you'd asked me a few years ago.

Dream job would be running a charity of some type.

I'd be a pro golfer. You get to see the world playing in the fresh air (usually in the sunshine) and you can keep playing for a long time earning great money, unlike other sports where you have to retire by the time you're 35.

When I was at school there was no advice about what to do when you left school and it was quite unusual to go to uni. I now wish that I knew then what I know now and would have trained to be a lawyer/barrister. I love the story in the news at the moment of the blonde hairdresser taking on a multi million pound building development company single handed and winning - she was offered a place a law school and has just acheived a first class hon is law - so envious.

I have hankerings after being a silversmith, particularly jewellery. It's always what I said I'd do ifI won the Lottery (Unlikely, since I don't do it!).

What i do know is that all jobs have their fab bits, boring bits, lovely people, bullies, busy days, slow days...and we all probably have a warped idea of what other jobs entail!

(Interested to see Tizzie would like to run a charity. Eeek - since that what I am involved in, I could tell you the reality!)

Another one here that works in marketing!

I love my job and am happy on the career path that I'm on - since I've been with my fiancé I'm not desperate to climb the ladder as much as before, though I'm still aiming to have at least one more step up.

If money wasn't an issue, I would love to work with food. I'm half Filipino and Filipino food is amazing, though not a lot of people know about it in the UK. The few restaurants that are around in London aren't that impressive either, which is such a shame. So I would love to be able to put Filipino food properly on the map - there is a definite gap in the market and we'll be lusting after another food trend once Scandinavian food isn't so in vogue anymore (though don't tell my Danish OH that!)

SO true! I started to fall out with a friend said to me "oh I wish I had a superficial job like you where you get to surf the internet all day!" after a group of us were flippantly just going through the day we'd just had at work ? Trust me, if all I did all day was surf the internet, I would quickly be turfed out onto the street with my P45 and zero references!

Haha sparkles, I used to be a pontine bluecoat! I love my job, although I find being a teacher quite isolating at times as in my school we don't have a staff room and all have our offices so rarely see adults, and the kids can be needy at times. I sometimes wonder what I would have been like if I went into something financially based, quite like the idea of living in London and living the bankers lifestyle, but would prob be bored after a few weeks!

I too wanted to be a firefighter, but failed the eye test. I still want to be within the Emergency services, tempted to join the Police but ideally I would be a paramedic.

I wish I had got into modelling at a younger age, although I'm not sure the whole industry would have been for me.

I could quite happily not work for the rest of my life though.
