What makes you happy?

Over the next while, I'm identifying and taking photos of 30 things which make me happy. Some will be deep, others will be flippant and not in any particular order.

I've only got two so far as I've not properly started thinking about it until today.

1. Macaroni cheese
This to me is the ultimate comfort food (well my half, I don't want tomatoes spoiling it thank you very much!) and probably would be my last meal, if I got choose. Although I enjoy it in restaurants and other people's houses, I'm quite pernickety about how it's made at home. It has to Marshall's Macaroni and made with medium coloured cheddar. Bacon and garlic are nice additions but not necessity. It should be grilled with cheese on top, letting it go crispy but not brown. I love it best when it's made by my mum, who lovingly cooked it when I was poorly as a child and also who really wants to make their own comfort food? Macaroni cheese rocks!

2. Fresh summer fruits
I love fruit and could live of it, in fact, I often do, especially in the summer. In a way, it's a real shame that what used to be just summer fruit only is so available all year round as it takes some of the specialness of it away. Cherries are the best as they are summer only and also lets face it, you still can't beat British summer berries. Yum.

I have ideas for a few more but I need to learn to love and understand myself to find everything which makes me happy.

So, what makes you happy? Share any amount; flippant, deep, funny but all truthful and realistic. ? (Don't worry about photos, I just thought I may as well include them as I have them. ?

I`m glad I opened this, as I`m in a foul mood so it has cheered me up and made me count my blessings a bit

    1) being on holiday-especially when you wake up and the sun is shining

    2) having a lovely clean house (I don`t like the actual cleaning bit so much, just the satisfaction of the end result)

    3) smoking (currently on day 2 of abstinence after major relapse on holiday)

    4) first sip of a really good bottle of crisp, dry white wine

    4) my little cat

    5) 5pm on a weekday

    6) Coronation St

    7) Losing weight

Err-bit sad, can`t hink of anything else but enjoying everyone else`s

This is an ever changing list but one that I think is extremely important. Currently:

The pop when you break the paper seal on a jar of coffee.

The first glug of a new bottle of wine.

    Taking pictures.

Looking over said pictures later, especially ones from weddings and big parties, but also random ones of flowers, bugs, books, whatever takes my eye.

Waking up to text messages from my friends.

When my husband smiles at me. We have had our problems but sometimes he just needs to smile across a room at me and it all seems better. (That sounds awfully cheesy, eh?)

    Galaxy Ripples.

Long hot baths with a good book.

    New stationery. Especially pens!

Opening a new book for the first time.

When I smell something really nice, recently I've been able to smell Honeysuckle near a friend's flat. I lost my sense of smell when I was 18 and it's been coming back recently, but it's still temperamental so I love it when I can smell something ?

Turning off all the lights and turning the music up. Or standing at a bus stop tapping my foot and mouthing the words to my favourite songs.

Starbucks/Costa etc. I know it's probably overpriced and very bad for me but I only go there to meet one particular friend of mine and I love our afternoons together.

There are more but that's enough for now, I've got a smile on my face ?

Being in Accessorize - not to buy anything, I just love looking at the pretty things

Going to the flea market at Tynemouth and coming home with bags full of books which will keep me going for weeks, having spent less than a tenner

    This is a great thread, my [rather lengthy] list is;

    - When a friend calls me just for a chat, or calls out the blue and wants to meet, just for the sake of it.

    - Picnics and general alfresco dining

    - Hugs, I love hugs ?

    - Pub gardens (real ones, with grass, not converted loading bays and car-parks)

    - Going to friends' houses for dinner or a barbeque

    - Dancing

    - Waking up in the morning and realising I don't have to get up

    - A really good bottle of wine, preferably pinot noir.

    - My husband reaching for me in his sleep ?

    - Sushi, scallops, crab - I love seafood, especially in Summer.

    - When people laugh at my jokes.

    - When I buy someone a present, or cook for someone and they love it. I like to do nice things for people.

    - Pizza and movies nights with H.

    - My husband, he can make me smile just by being there ?

    - My friends and family in general.

I've been thinking about this today so that I can start working through my list.

    • The first fuschia in the garden
    • Cutting fresh herbs and cooking with them within minutes
    • The signpost saying "Welcome to Musselburgh"
    • My mum
    • My husband (what HH says is very, very true , thank you)
    • My friends
    • My friends' children
    • Seeing the cygnets in the River Esk, Musselburgh
    • Ice cream chocolate sliders from S Luca's in Musselburgh (which I struggle not to call the hideously un-pc name from yesteryear ?)
    • Chip shop supper with nippy sauce from any seaside fish and chip shop on the east coast of Scotland
    • Buying stationary
    • The smell of fresh lavender
    • The feeling of lying in your own bed for the first time after being in hospital or on holiday
    • Watching dogs run on the beach like my old boy used to do
    • The sound of Frankie purring when lying on my chest
    • Taking photos when there is a beautiful blue sky
    • Looking at old photos
    • Snow that your feet sink into when you walk through it and makes a crunching sound
    • Christmas Eve when the shops are closed and the curtains are drawn

There will be more, I'm sure.

Thanks everyone and I'm glad it's been helpful to some of you. ? if you need one and keep them coming!

    In no particular order:

    • Trees with green leaves
    • Vanilla ice cream with hot fudge sauce
    • A glass of chilled water half way through a Chinese meal
    • Lying on my bed during autumn / spring when it is cold outside but the sunlight streams in and warms you (especially good whilst naked!)
    • "I love you mummy"
    • Reading a good book
    • Massage by H
    • The smell of fresh bread and basil

    ToriaJayne is absolutely right, it is an important list. So mine are;

Buying 3 for 2 books at waterstones, getting them home and getting into bed with them.

    Fresh bed sheets

    a good run

waking up early then realising its SATURDAY

listening to my Mum and Dads mad expolits- they are just those people who seem to have thinga happen to them

feeling organised and calm (I love feeling like this, I think I have OCD as i get upset if everything isn't perfect)

finding a matching pair of stockings first time

when your favorite song comes on the radio (random 70s motown for me)

when I have successfully avoided the in laws for a long time.

Fresh bedding, and getting into bed nice and clean after a shower.

My recently landscaped garden, and my 3 year old playing out there all day in the nice weather.

    Washing drying on the line.

Baking fairy cakes, I'm not a particulaly good baker, but seeing rows of pretty little cakes that my family devour in a few hours makes me smile.

Cooking nice food. I always cook from scratch and spend many hours in the kitchen. Getting a recipe right and seeing friends/family enjoying my food makes me very happy.

    A nice glass of wine.

Winter... I love winder. Dark mornings, dark ights, rain, snow, comfort food, big jumpers... I love it all.

Christmas. Nothing gets me going like Christmas. My boys are still young, but I have such happy memories of christmas from when I was a child that I desperately want to re-create that for them.

Seeing my boys sleep. Every night before bed we check on them and they're both looking adorable sleeping in the bed and cot.

Making people happy. I'm very much a pleaser, so doing something that makes someone special happy is very important to me.

Driving. I love driving and fast cars.

Clean floors. I think I have a touch of OCD when it comes to my floors. I have to have them clean, which with 2 small kids and a dog is a bit of a challenge.

My house. It's not particularly big or posh, but it's my little haven. It's where me and H have lived together from the beginning, where we bought both my sons home from hospital and where we've grown together as a family.

I think overall my husband and sons make me the happiest of all. All my life I've wanted my own family and I've now got it. We might have our ups and downs, but we're all healthy, all love each other very, very much and I'd die for any one for them

I was thinking about doing a post about this Zeb. Obviously it's not news that Quakers are generally awesome and right-on, but actually it is a big deal for a group that is still a denomination of the Christian Church to be so publically supportive and call for equality in legislation.

Equality, integrity, peace and simplicity. Not a bad way to live your life. I'm always proud to have been brought up Quaker. Even though I can't reconcile my atheism with going to Meeting for Worship, it's a part of who I am - 'culturally Quaker' if you like.

    Great thread!

My husband - We laugh so much, he's great to be with and I know that he'd do anything for me and vice versa. I feel very lucky to have found him.

My Dogs - I cannot imagine my live without them, they mean the world to me. The joy they bring cannot be described, they make me laugh soooo much, especially Hudson who is a prize idiot! Hugo is more of the guardian, he's grown up and aloof. We took them for a walk in the woods last week in the torrential rain and it all flooded. It was one of the best days I've had, the dogs were wild, Hugo found a waterfall and tried to eat it and we all got soaked and giggled. I realised then that silly things like that are what's important.

Fresh sheets - I love that feeling. I've said when I am rich and have a maid (I hate making the bed) I will have fresh sheets every day (sorry environment)

Frasier - I watch an episode every night before I go to sleep, I love it! We must have watched each one about 6 times now but it still makes us laugh.

    Mrs Doubtfire - Ditto above

Helping people - I love doing things for others and knowing that I have made them happy

New things - It doesn't have to be anything expensive but I love that feeling of getting something new, a plant for the garden, new shoes, anything.

Autumn - I love the colours and kicking the leaves in the woods when walking the boys.

Music - I don't know what I would do if my music was taken away from me.

Cooking - I could happily spend all day in the kitchen

My friends - I am lucky to have some truly wonderful friends around me.

Making my husbands sandwiches - My husband is really unhappy in his current contract and each day I make him a packed lunch. It sounds silly but I try and fill it with lots of love so that when he opens it it will make him smile. I know he eats at 1pm so I always think of him tucking in.

A log fire - There's nothing like lighting a fire on a cold evening.

The food order arriving - I love it when the fridge is bursting with goodness and the choice of what to cook is vast.

There's loads I have missed I'm sure. I do think I'm really lucky as I have a very happy life (aside from the odd bit of sh!t life throws at you!)

What a wonderful thread. This has made me all happy and ? just reading it. I think this list is always a very important thing to have in your mind, i find it especially helpful when the depression hits hard.

    Things that make me happy:

My mr delicious- we have our ups and downs but i've never loved anyone the way i love him. He has some very annoying habits, he twitches his face when he's watching tv, but i love everything about him because of these little quirks. I could go on forever!

when my mum makes me steak and ale pie with puff pastry and lots of mashy potatoes. My favourite ever meal, but i only ever eat it at my mums because its just not the same anywhere else.

Wednesday night dinners and sunday lunches with my lovely grandparents. I missed out a lot on them when i was a child so i love that i live near enough now to be with them whenever i can.

My housemates- they are my best friends and we have so much fun. I have lots of lovely happy memories of the last two years and can't wait to get home in september to spend more time with them. It doesnt matter if we're all just sat around watching TV or whether we all go out for dinner, its like we're the girls from sex and the city and i love it. I can't wait for our camping trip in september either. It also makes me incredibly happy that they accepted and like mr delicious.

When my cousin K comes to visit. She has been my very best friend all my life and is like my sister.

Driving around on a sunny day just exploring the country side

long walks in the woods, whatever the weather (although i do draw the line at raining)

    the smell of lavendar

    the smell of honeysuckle too

    lying on the grass

    my bed

when i get a good nights sleep

when my mum brings me expensive perfume from her holidays because she feels guilty for not taking me with them. Last night she brought me Agent Provocateur Eau de Parfum.

going on holiday, i don't mind if its abroad or in england, its just nice to have a change of scenery and somewhere new to explore.

Laying by the pool on holiday with a cocktail and a good book

A good book in general always makes me happy

    Watching my favourite films

going to the cinema and seeing a really good film

a cold crisp autumn day when the sun is shining but you have to wrap up warm

A snowy winters day when you can drink hot chocolate with marshmallows and watch a good film

taking photographs and looking back at them and knowing the story of each one. I took 287 photos when we went to hadrians wall last summer.

Spending time with my incredibly big family, knowing that every single person there knows me, loves me, and will look out for me. and they will all make me delicious food too!

Being with my cousins' children, aged 4 and 9 month old twins. They always make me smile.

    Cuddles from the twins.

    popcorn. yummy.

a good cup of tea and a jam and cream scone.

When i find clothes that i like and that fit me. (being the big lard @rse that i am)

the thrill of buying something i like and wanting to go home and play with it. Even when its new towels.

camping holidays- being out in the countryside and having log fires, BBQ's, tinned spaghetti for breakfast

Kayaking- i don't do it often but i enjoy it a lot. I especially like that mr delicious is so good at it and enjoys himself.

spending time with MIL. We don't always see eye to eye on every issue but she's fun to be with and accepts me much more readily now she knows she's not getting rid of me.

There's probably loads more but this is quite a long list already.

    Edited to add

seeing Lincoln Cathedral. I have lots of happy memories, especially since its where mr delicious proposed to me.

    I've thought of some.

Cycling. Years after giving up hope of properly exercising again after injuring my knees, I can do a fair amount of cycling without being in pain for days on end afterwards. I love going out along the Ridgeway after work. It clears my head.

Coffee. I love it and could drink 10 cups a day (I don't!)

Garlic chilli chicken from my favourite Indian nearby.

Wine. I'm not sure it makes me happy but I love it anyway ?

When the house is clean - boring but true

Sunday nights when I see my family - we eat together pretty much every Sunday evening, taking it in turns between the 3 of us to cook.

When I put my jeans on and they're not tight

    New underwear.

    Awesome thread Mrs Magic!

My husband - he's stubborn and a PITA sometimes, but he adores me even when I'm behaving really quite badly and sometimes he looks at me and smiles and it melts me

My cat - he is so loving and affectionate and I'm so proud of how his confidence has improved over the 4 years we've had him. He kept me company when I was up at 4am the other night and only demanded food a couple of times ?

My house when it is clean and tidy, which doesn't happen as often as it should, but it's so nice to sit back on the sofa and look around at a clean stress free house.

Family - ours live a long way away so any time we get to spend with them is special. We're going away for the bank holiday to a cottage with my parents and I'm really looking forward to it ?.

Friends - we have some fab ones and we're trying hard to see more of them as we've got very lax of late.

Hitched - goes without saying, I've met some fab people on here and it's a comfort to know that if I needed you guys you'd be there for me.

Strawberry fizz wizz (popping candy) - because it makes me feel like a small child again.

Can't think of any more right now which is a bit sad, but maybe I'll get back to this later on.

I have really enjoyed reading this thread, and so many times I've got to a post, read one of the things and thought - yes, totally agree!

I think mine would be fairly similar to a lot of these, but I'll post them anyway:

Friday evenings - finishing work at 5pm and no matter what I'm doing, knowing that I have the weekend ahead of me

    Getting paid

Another vote for a clean flat and fresh bedsheets

The early days of summer when you can start going out without a jacket and the mornings are lighter, everyone has a spring in their step

The first cup of tea in the morning

Hot crumpets with lots of butter

    Starbucks' skinny blueberry muffins

The glug of wine pouring into a glass

The first sip of said wine especially after a hard day at work - ice cold dry white preferably ?

Glugging ice cold water when you're hungover

Watching Sex and the City - both the series and the film - over and over again

Losing weight - and people noticing it

Doing really well in my job

Being on holiday and feeling carefree

    Cocktails

    High heels

Getting my hair and nails done

    Getting dressed up

Being with my family - I feel blessed to be as close to them as I am, I consider most of them my best friends - young and old, male and female - and we have so much fun together

Meeting up with my closest friends - we've been a tight knit group for 10 years now and have been through a lot together. I will always hold them very dear to my heart and have endless time for them

Snuggling up in bed with OH watching something funny on TV before drifting off to sleep

Christmas morning - waking up with OH at my parents house and going down to give them all a hug, have breakfast and open presents listening to the Rat Pack

My family dog - spending as much time as I can with her, she has a fantastic personality and I genuinely love her

Thinking of and planning our wedding and knowing that this time next year I'll be married to my amazing OH ?

As others have said, there would be lots more but I think I've probably gone on too long as it is! ?

Nice thread! Makes me feel a bit less cynical and jaded!

1: My soon to be husband. He's my soul mate. I've never laughed so much or felt so at one with someone.

2: My large grumpy cat. When he remembers that he does love me really and gives me a huge headbutt.

3: My small scared cat. When she forgets to be frightened for a little while and miaows a whole conversation at me.

4: Taking photographs. I love it!

5: Managing to have time to do my hair and put some makeup on and being told that I look nice.

6: Wine. (there seems to be a hitched theme here!)

7: Going to the in-laws down in Dorset and being "forced" to eat loads of food and drink loads of wine, so I end up going to bed with my head spinning.

8: My Nan. Actually she should have been further up. She's losing her marbles, and gets everybody's name wrong, but she's lovely!

9: Driving home from work on a Sunday night knowing that Iain will be waiting for me, and that I have two days off while everyone goes to work!

10: My mum trying desperately to shop somewhere else, but still ending up in M&S.

11: My Dad and I having long conversations about carburettas and circuit diagrams.

    There are proabably more!

The smell of rain on the pavements on a hot & humid day

Seeing a plane land or take off as I drive up the M25 - I fly every day for work but I still get a geeky thrill from this

Getting a beautiful bunch of flowers from a proper florist

Laughing with my best friends until I can't breathe

    Fresh bread and salted butter

    A good mojito

Bora Bora beach in Ibiza at 4pm when the music comes on

Similarly - watching the sunset at Cafe Mambo in Ibiza

Having tea and a shitload of biscuits instead of a meal - so naughty and ridiculous

Losing weight and & people noticing

Being constantly suprised at how kind, calm, unselfish & thoughtful my H is - he is wonderful man and a much better person than I am

    Cheese & wine

My kitteh Toby sleeping on my chest

Lolling about at the weekend (if I have it off) with my OH. Doing nothing apart from burbling to each other. I feel very lucky to have found someone who loves me for who I am and I don't have to put on an act (should shave my legs more often though!). Also listening to his music on Napster - lots of classical stuff that I would never think of listening to, much nicer than the telly, but we should do it more. Then it's my turn to choose and I go blank, but he'll still dutifully listen to whatever crap pops into my head.

Nuzzling OH's ears (I love the fluffy velvety hairs on earlobes!)

Being the only person ever to have nuzzled OH's ears.

Having felt overwhelmed with work then remembering I have my MP3 player in my pocket and sitting on the train listening to happy tunes that instantly cheer me up and remind me it's 'work to live, not live to work'.

Smelling a smell that takes me back to somewhere nice - perfumes that remind me of when I was finishing my A Levels (Isee Myaki [sp?]), the smell of Horse Chestnut Trees (conkers!!!!!!), the smell of cinnamon - any time, I love it. I have two wooden apple shaped things infused with cinnamon and I'm a little OCD about smelling them before I go to bed.

In a similar vien, a Chai Steamer from the wee AMT coffee 'hut' at the station on the way to work....yum!

Ooh, and mulled wine! Despite being completely incapable of cooking I like to throw 'food' parties for my very good friends -Pancake Parties and Mulled Wine & Mince Pie Parties (if you don't like mulled wine try Winter Pimms - heat up with 2 parts Winter Pimms and 2 parts Apple juice - bloody gorgeous!).

Christmas - even though I work in retail and Christmas will start in about three weeks! I love it. I'm not religious and I don't like the commercialisation of it, but as winter festivals that raise the spirits in dark winter months go, it can't be beat in my mind. I'd have my tree, fake presents underneath it and my lights up from December 1st if OH would let me but he detests it (that makes me a bit sad).

Hogmanay - Brilliant fun with my friends and I suppose it used to be the promise of 'a new year a new you' - getting on a bit now and realise resolutions can happen at any time and New Year isn't the best time for it but I love the 'birthday' feel to it - but it's not just your own, everyone gets to join in.

Cooking something and it turning out quite nice (rare - I have an inability to follow a recipe without 'adding' to it).

Having a clean and tidy house/cleaning and tidying at work....don't particularly love doing it - but love stepping back once it's done and thinking 'well done me! That's good work!' I've missed my train home from work on occasion by standing and staring at a department I've moved about and thinking "now that looks lovely and I may actually cry on Saturday when it's all messed up!" but it makes me happy there and then, out of hours, when it's perfect.

A lovely meal out, a lunch with wine followed by a cocktail each leaves me with that 'day drinking' feel that you don't get from a night on the tiles.

Sunshine, it just puts a smile on everyone's face, doesn't it? I think we're more grateful for it on this rainy little island than elsewhere.

Finding jeans and shoes that fit and are comfy - I think I'm an odd shape!

Running - this is a strange one. I know I love it when I do it but motivating myself to get out there is really hard right now. I did a half marathon two years ago and have only been out running about ten times since - but the feeling of pride and self worth I got from that was amazing. I wonder what the block is?

Fantastic thread...I've loved reading this and it's made me very grateful for what I have and who I have in my life. Thanks!

PS Macaroni cheese...Oh yes! My Mum's is the best ever!

So many things, but to start with

    1. Going home to London, especially at xmas, to see my family and friends, i love nothing more than waking up on christmas morning, listening to my nan and grandad preparing the breakfast singing along to old war songs together, never fails to make me smile.

    2. Shopping, especially for shoes!

    3. My skinny jeans, (when i can get into them!!)

    4. Holidays

    5. Lazing in bed at the weekend, knowing i havent got to get up for work,

    6. Cold side of the pillow

    7. Smell of baby powder and fresh washing (Im going to include fresh bedding in this one)

    8. Driving - Ever since i passed my test i've loved the independance of being able to go wherever i want, whenever i want.

    9. My Partner- Never fails to make me smile, and has done everyday since we've been together, i've never felt at ease with a guy as much as i do with him..

    10. Fresh Cream Tea- Living in devon has made me addicted to these

    11. Sitting in the garden on a warm summers evening with a glass (or two) of wine, just watching the world go by.

That will do for now, i think i'd be here all day!
