What would you NEVER have at your wedding?!?

Following on a little from the 'Owl ring bearer' thread, What are you definitely NOT having at your wedding? What do you think is not you, to over done or simply tacky??? I'll start - - animals - chair covers - diamond/crystals on the tables (Just my opinion, mind!)

First thing I thought of was balloons. Ugh. Then I completely agree with banning money poems (if you don't need anything, don't ask, or give to charity. Gone are the days, for most people, when getting married also meant leaving home and therefore needing a kettle / toaster etc).

    I also hate:

cupcakes (I'm not American, thanks), cheesy music (birdy song, agadoo, oops upside your 'ed, macarena or anything even vaguely similar), satin dresses, especially satin meringues with pin tucks or pick-ups. Ugh. sweetie tables / photo booths (serve a proper dessert, ffs, and the entertainment is surely seeing the B&G happy, you're there for them, not for you). Guest books (how many people will you even remember in 5yrs? 25yrs?? - out of the non-family guests who went to my first wedding 10yrs ago, I'm only in touch with about 3). Children at evening receptions, pratting about on the dance floor. Cute? No! Favours (to me, they fall into the same category as items from a christmas cracker, except you feel slightly more guilty binning them. What? You don't want a miniature picture frame with the date of someone else's wedding on? Shame on you!!)

Oooh the list goes on. I could write more, but can't be bothered. Suffice to say that I think too many people concentrate on the fripperies, when it's the vows that matter.

Yes well that's the reason we're eloping. I had all the fuss first time round and got caught up in the whole wedding juggernaut. This time we're doing it ourselves, so it's us and a priest on the beach and we will be focussed purely on the vows and commitment. We will have a reception/party later for family and friends, but will try to keep it low-key and a celebration rather than a bells and whistles reception Smiley smile

Wow some of you ladies are harsh! ?

but then on saying that i agree with the money poem. we havent put anything oin our invites regarding gifts. if any one asks we say we want vouchers for bnq or john lewis BUT if they odnt ask and we end up with 50 photoframes because thats what people wanted to buy then so be it.

i also am having no children at my wedding.

I had most of the things mentioned in this thread ?

    I would never have:

    - A dress with a spilt up the side of it.

    - Artificical flowers.

    - Animals.

    - A wishing well or money poems.

    - An extra dress to change into on the evening.

    - A coloured dress.

    I could go on forever...

    I would never have had:

    - A meringue dress

    - pets

    - A wishing well or money poems.

-a bride with a fag in her gob

    - a B&Q wedding arch decorated with a bit of net or atrificial flowers

    - hours of photography

    - rigid timeframes - it doesnt work and totally spoils the vibe of your day!

    - guests dressed like they are going out on a girls pulling night out!

    - brides who spend their day organising everything - how can you possibly enjoy your day!

    - guests who tell you how lovely everything is then snipe about it behind your back! either have the balls to tell me you no likey, keep your gob shut, or go home!

    - overly planned dances (routines)

    - guests you have no idea who they are!

    - excessive makeup

    - feathers

    -pushy photographers

    - cheap vinegary table wine

    - 300 people giving a speech.

    -horse and carriage

Sorry but once I started i struggled to stop! haha!

I am not going to start my post with a disclaimer... these are my opinions!

Animals - This includes but not exclusive to: pigeon lobbing, live fish centrepieces, the family dog as a ringbearer.

Bright wedding dresses - I don't mind the blush pink and cream tones, but not bright red, green or blue.

Wishing Wells & Money Poems - No explanation needed.

Choreographed wedding entrances - It's a wedding, walking is just fine.

Choreographed first dances - Traditional dance routine is fine - waltz, even rumba, just don't break into MC Hammer. Not cool.

Overly girly themes - We are talking Disney Princess level ala Gypsy Wedding here including Cindarella carriages.

Magicians - unless you hire Dynamo. He is cool.

Balloons - Just don't like them at weddings, birthday parties are fine.

There is probably more than this, but I can't think of them right now...

It has changed... I came here because it wasn't as fluffy as the pink side... but the xx's and 'huns' are starting to make it twee again.

I used to prefer the honesty rather than the generic 'it looks lovely hun'...

    Hear hear Mrs C.

I'd just like to say as well that our pink theme was chosen by my OH not me, I wanted blue. So not all husbands have pink 'forced' upon them so the day is made all girly and all about the bride, he just really wanted to wear pink. Should I be worried...?

Anything pink red orange or yellow - nothing against the colours but my two red haired bridesmaids are scared they'll clash ?.

Whisky - gets my OH and his brother (best man) absolutely trollied ?.

Animals as part of the wedding - although we will have my friends guide dog there.

Plus ones - if I want your other half there I will invite them by name.

I'm sure there are others I'll think up lol.

Cadburys purple (as a friend of mine who was a bridesmaid put it, she looked like the big purple one)

    Sweetie tables, done to death

Lumps of dried chicken as a meal

    Animals, sorry but it's tacky

    Cheap shiny wedding dresses

Wedding dresses with colours in them

    Anything Disney

Terrible cheesy music, I love cheese but I am not doing agadoo etc

A band instead of a DJ, only because I like hearing the real thing

Receiving lines, awkward and way too formal

Engraved presents such as photo frames, hip flasks and tankards. Why would anyone want something with your wedding date on or something that will never get used

    It's just people's personal opinions.

I had a pink wedding with fireworks but I'm not bothered by what anyone on here thinks.

Oh where do I start?! I think wedding today are overdone, overpriced and way too fussy. Things I hate at weddings and would never dream os having include:

Traditional white/cream/ivory dresses - think outside the box ladies!

    Animals of any kind

Sweetie buffets (it's a wedding not a kids party!)

    Balloons and arches

    Chinese lanterns

    Mismatched bridesmaids

    Too many bridesmaids

Junior bridesmaids with too much make-up

Brides in 'natural' make-up - whats the point?

MOB and MOG (or any 'older ladies') in mutton-dressed-as-lamb outfits

    Men looking uncomfortable in suits

Grooms looking as if it's all news to them

Themes - especially vintage, butterflies, shabby chic and village fete/garden party

    Pink and purple ANYTHING

People who get precious over 'my wedding is going to be classy' when it's really quite tacky

    Discos, DJs and cr@p dancing

    Jazz bands

People sticking to tradition and silly rules because it's what is expected

....I'm sure there's more, but I'll stop there.

    I wouldn't have:

    balloons

    animals

    buffet for main meal

    bunting

    tall centre pieces

    string quartet

free bar - can just lead to too many drunk people (sometimes)

I'm sure these things would suit plenty of other people, but I'd hate them!

    Balloons

Brides/Grooms who feel the need to sing to each other or to the guests

    Almonds

    Sweetie Buffet / Table

    Cup Cake towers

    Ring cushions

Cadbury Purple as a colour theme

    * Animals - especially dove/butterfly releases. 100% cruel.

    * Ice sculptures - I just think they're tacky.

    * A choreographed first dance - we're just going to go with the flow, it's our wedding day, we're not contestants on Strictly Come Dancing!

    * Meat - we're both vegetarians so veggie-only food at our wedding.

    * String quarter - pretentious.

    * Those singing waiter types - cringe alert.

    * Karaoke - no-one should be forced to hear the MOG attempting to sing 'My Heart Will Go On', especially with those high notes. As for the bride's cousin trying to pretend he's Michael Jackson up there. No. Just no.

    * Fireworks - hate them.

    * Horse and carriage - I'm not royalty. It's taking the whole, 'princess for the day' thing to a whole new level.

    * Pretentious wording of the menus - there will be no "succulent disc of seared farm-reared steak delicately crowned with locally sourced hand-pressed organic cheddar, nestling in a pillow-soft toasted artisan bun" nonsense on our menus. (This is a pretentious way to describe a cheeseburger by the way). I want our guests to know what they're eating. I'm fed up with going to weddings, where the menu is worded in such a pretentious way, I have no idea if I'm actually going to get something vegetarian to eat or not!

Anything princess-ey - You're a bride, not a six year old. Grow up.

White satin dress - IMO, they look very cheap.

Receiving line - I wouldn't normally air kiss my friends and family so why do it now??

Matchy matchy colours - Pink BM dresses to match the groom's pink waistcoat to match the pink ribbon on the cake to match the pink chair sashes. Bleurgh!!!

Fake behaviour - If a speech isn't funny, don't fake laugh at it!! (Pressures on for our best man!) Just act like you normally would around OH and myself!!

Swirly waistcoats - Need I say more...

Diamante or any kind of sparkles - Again, looks cheap.

Favours - If someone thinks they deserve a present for coming to our wedding, then I'd rather they didn't bother coming at all!!

And if I get my own way... potatoes ?

Karaoke - hate it, hate it, hate it.

Overly cheesy music - I don't mind a wee bit of romantic cheese now and again but please no Abba or Greese mega mixes

The groom saying "After our first date I went home and told my mum I'd met the girl I was going to marry". Barf! Heard this too many times and never actually believed it.

Bridal party chewing gum - my Dad gave up smoking years ago but hasn't been able to give up the Nicorette. Obviously I prefer it to him smoking but I'll just cringe if he's popping gum during the ceremony.

Over the top favours that most guests will just hide away in a shoe box never to be seen again

    Pastel coloured BM dresses

A venue that is 100 miles away from where anyone lives so your guests have to pay to stay overnight

I think it was exactly what the place needed Nora.

One of the things that has always made Hitched great is the absence of over-sensitivity and the ability for everyone to debate what they like and don't like without anyone taking it personally.

There's a good reason quite a few of the Hitched awards poke fun at users who are 'twee' and 'fluffy' - it's never been that sort of place. There are plenty of other wedding forums that indulge that well enough already!
