What's your Woolies?

R-A, 23 March, 2009 at 15:36 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 64

I remember saying on here when Woolies went under that it would be an interesting yardstick of "gentrification" to see what various local Woolies got turned into.

I've just walked past the empty shell of ours and it has a sign saying that it's going to be an Iceland.

Obviously no gentrification here ?

I was hoping for a WH Smiths as I now have nowhere to buy paper/ink cartridges/stationery type things.

I can't think what I'd use an Iceland for, unless it's cheaper than Tesco for bulk buy pasta/rice/tins? <hopeful icon> I haven't been in there since me and Mr R-A went through a stage of being obsessed with their microwavable doughnuts ?

Has anyone else's Woolies been replaced yet?

Nothing as of yet. It's still empty. Our high street is pitiful atm, loads of shops have left. I really hope it's something different. We already have an iceland.

ETA - Lots of shops have closed, not left. They don't have legs obviously.

They are certainly gutting it to make it into something, but they haven't posted what yet. My friend and I had an idea about the Tamworth one as it's quite big...all the saturday market stall owners should move in there to create a warmer indoor market, I'm sure the market would appeal to far more people if they did that.

Ours is still empty too, in fact there are a lot of empty shops round here, it's such a shame...

Tadah, I've heard two possibles for Tamworth. Either Iceland moving into their instead of their current position (which is small, cramped, dark and tucked away) or Primark

Ours is still empty with no notices to say what (if anything) it will be turned in to. I think tahdah's idea is excellent. Our local market is far to spread out really, it would be much better contained in one place.

Ours is empty. We already have an Iceland, I don't know what the next level down from that is... maybe a FarmFoods?!

My friend would love a primarni...there's very little else there apart from the retail park for clothes shopping.

It's still empty but one of the other shopkeepers told me it was going to be a Primark.

Liz, we do already have an Iceland half a mile or so down the road, but that doesn't seem to have stopped them!

I live in Countryshire, but the one in our nearest town is rumoured to be an Iceland or a Primark, depending on who you talk to.

I get ink cartridges/paper/stationery in Tesco.

Mine is a seeeeeeriously crappy cheap clothing shop. LOML's is a 99p store, and the one near where I used to live with cuntface is now a Waitrose. Go figure ?

Ours (St Helier, Jersey) is in the middle of being transformed from Woolies to New Look which is quite good as they will be completely new store to the Island. ?

Well we already have a mahoosive Primarni so it seems Iceland was the only option!

HH: our Tesco is too small for that kind of stuff. Well, actually it's quite big, but still doesn't sell them. I was hoping they'd start once Woolies went.

I have to chuff into town to Argos at the moment. Hmmm... actually an Argos would've been good.

Iceland have taken a number of them

Primark may take others, however they did a big expansion when C&A closed down and took over a lot of their stores.

The problem is a lot of the stores are very big but don't have parking so aren't that appealing to a lot of retailers.

The retail market is so odd at the moment and fortunately / unfortunately depending on who you are the few retailers who do want to expand have an extensive number of empty units to chose from and can then play off the landlords against each other to get the best rent deal

Ours is still empty and we have shops closing all the time. There have been rumours of a Primark moving in but I hope not as I hate Primark with a passion. We already have an Iceland so I can't see a new one opening

River Island and Topshop are moving from their smaller stores in Aberdeen to the bigger ex-woolies site in the shopping centre.

Oooh I would've loved a New Look. I've changed my mind from WH Smiths and Argos ? I used to live in New Look, and they still do the best jeans for fat arses imho. We have a Mark One (which has been "closing down" for about a year now) and Primarni at the mo.

ETA. I didn't actually live in New Look.

The one in Dudley will probably stand empty for a very long time. Even McDonalds has gone.

    Wow, that doesn't sound good.

Our Maccy D's, KFC and Pizza Hut takeaway appear to still be going strong, along with most of the independent kebab/chip places.

Finally your getting one! When I was on my training courses last year, every time the Jersey girls came back from lunch break they were always loaded down with New Look bags. Well, I suppose it made a change for Guernsey to have something before Jersey.

The one in the town where I work is a pound shop which makes the place seem even more depressing...

The one in the small town nearest to where I live is still empty - it's a huge shop right in the middle fo the main street so I have no idea what will go there. If they could split it in half and have a White Stuff and a Joules shop that'd be great - not for my bank balance though obviously.

The Woolies nearest to me is changing to an Iceland but there is already a much bigger Iceland at the harbourside with loads of parking space. The Woolies in the town where I work, I think it was the last one to close, is still empty, and its a huge shop, so have no idea what is going in there.

It has been quite a while since it shut but it was an indicator of how bad Dudley is if McDonalds won't consider staying open. Subway and kfc seem to be doing ok though.

The Wolverhampton wollies doesn't seem to be changing into anything else either. The shopping centre where it is has plenty of shut down shops though and dorothy perkins shut down a couple of weeks ago.

Ours is rumored to be turning into a tesco express, which i can't see myself as we have a tesco about 2 miles up the road from where the woolies is situated.

I think a home bargains or iceland would be good where we live, but i am doubting that is what will get

I know it's daft isn't it! ? I went for a mooch around the one in the flash new market in St PP last time I was over and it was actually quite fab. My sil now lives in Gsy and she always moans that the shops aren't as good as over here whereas I went over there I thought the selection wasn't bad - apart from Creasey's -give me de Gruchy's any day!

My local kwik save was bought by tesco express when they went under and that was with one less than 1.5 miles away from the old kwik save.

Ours (St Helens) is going to be a Primarni according to rumours I've heard. We have lots of Icelands already so I don't think it'll be one of those. The site is quite big actually so Primarni should do a good trade - I suspect M&S which is right next door won't be too happy though ?
