Where did you find your wedding videographer/photographer?

edbarton, 27 July, 2011 at 22:48 Posted on Planning 0 33

Just a general question really, where has everybody found their photographer or videographer. If it has been through friends have they lived up to expectations, if through the venue's preferred supplier list, did they live up to what you'd expected or did you just find yours via a google search or online?

Thanks!!

Ed

We found ours at a wedding fair. There were six present but the one we chose stood out by a mile as the obvious choice as being suitable for our needs, both in budget, style of work and general personality.

TOG was recommended by caterers, as they work with him often, VOG is TOG's dad and taught TOG all he knows!

Our TOG is a professional who works at the Art College with my OH.

    We found our VOG online.

Our TOG was a recommendation from Hitched. Our VOG was chosen after someone posted a link to their highlight DVD on Hitched

TOG was a recommendation from Hitched, VOG was a recommendation from a friend who got married at the same venue.

The TOG and VOG that were on the venue's recommended list were overpriced and a bit snooty tbh...

I would go on personal recommendation most of the time.

I went to school with her and she was the tog for my friend's wedding. It was nice that I already knew her - made me feel a lot more comfortable.

We found ours just by Google searching as noone had been married before us at that time and the venues recommendations weren't very 'us'. I think if I was to do it now I would look at wedding blogs. Some actually put work on from people other than their sponsors so you feel like they're not just promoting the people paying them Smiley smile Our photographer ended up ruining our whole experience after the wedding and I've heard people say that they've not been able to find a single review so we believe they are deleting them!? Smiley sad So it's not just the 'cheap' ones you need to be wary of!

I love Brides Up North and English Wedding but there's so many you just need to find the one that suits your style and you'll be hooked Smiley smile

There are many different ways to find your photographer/videographer

We are on several venues recommended supplier lists, but I would be wary of this. We have found that some hotels add their friends/family members to recommended supplier lists and it does not necessary mean they are the best!!

Asking friends and family is a great way to find your suppliers. Ask to see their albums/dvds to get an idea of what you could get and find a style that suits you. Even though its your bestest friend, don't just take their word for it, ask to see their albums.

Also visit wedding fairs and speak to the supplier face to face and view their work. Its not just about how their work looks, you need to 'click' with their personalities. So many brides to be book on website alone and I discourage that.

Our TOG was the OH's brother in law - he's a commercial TOG by trade. We found our original VOG at a wedding fair but he dropped out 10 days before the wedding - he had a serious accident on holiday. In a mad panic, I put out a message on Facebook and thankfully on the same day, my friend recommended her friend who's a VOG - it was a blessing in disguise because he turned out to be fantastic.

This is absolutely true and very honourable of CIA to highlight the matter despite being "listed" themselves....??

We found ours at another wedding we were at last year - my OH was best man and he hates having his pic taken (and had a bad habit of blinking at the click!). We've met with ours and he has tips (like how to have a wee in your wedding dress!) etc and is happy to answer any non photography q's as hes been to many wedding and seen what happens behind the scene. He made my OH feel so relaxed and you hardly noticed him on the day and he takes the most relaxed and catches the moments perfectly. www.energyphotographic.co.uk Seeing him in action (and his photos are amazing) was the deal breaker!

Many togs with experience will also offer life expereinces of weddings in order to help the flow of the wedding day....

FWIW, Sean has been or still is a member of this forum, and your link doesnt do it correctly....he is a .com not co.uk. Change that in the url and it will connect you to his website......

We're using CIAphotography and we found them through a Loch Lomond website Smiley smile For the VOG, I did loads of research and we found a company that also offer a "marryoke" service which swung it for us.

    Hello!

That would be the Your Wedding at Loch Lomond directory I presume? ?

As for your VOG, is it Simon? He's a local marryoke videographer and a great guy, but of course we work well with many videographers!

Thanks for the recommendations, not long to go now!

We haven't picked ours yet, but we're narrowed it down to two, both of whom were recommended by our venue. We wanted someone familiar with the grounds and building, who would know the best shots.

You're definately best going from personal recommendation, when i did weddings almost 80% of my bookings came from friends of happy brides. Only ask couples who've already been married, they can give you a much better and complete picture of their suppliers - how they were on the day, did they capture what the couple wanted, did they deliver on time, were the photos wonderful etc? If you have no personal recs to go on, look at websites - REALLY look, consistantly good photographers have LOADS of photos on display, showing a variety of well composed and beautiful images, look closely at lighting too - in my experience how to read light is one of the dividing factors between a good and poor photographer. Meet with the ones whose work you like, this usually helps you decide right there and then!

Although venue recs can be helpful, as in you know they may be reliable, dont forget that a good photorapher does not need much time to scope out the best shots, its not necessary that they have been to your venue before.

My VOG is Alasdair from Piece of Time Media.

So excited, that's us under the five month mark now ? I'm just about to send you an email about arranging a meeting at the venue ?

I found narrowed my selection down by first googling 'wedding at <venue name>' as this brought up lots of Togs blogs who had covered weddings at my venue. I spent weeks looking through those to see whose style I liked, then came on here with my shortlist and asked for any comments. I arranged meetings with the 'Top 3' but we clicked so well with the first guy we saw that we booked him on the spot (bear in mind we'd gone through his work with a fine tooth comb both before and during the meeting though!).

This is really great advice but not always practical. Most of our friends married years ago and either didn't have a pro-Tog. So we had to rely on the internet and whilst you can still get recommendations on sites like this, it's still very heavily trust based as whilst other Hitchers are lovely and helpful, it's hard to know what's important to people you don't really know and make a fully informed recommendation. It is great to be able to see what other people say about the suppliers you are considering though Smiley smile
