White Doves...market research

joycie, 27 July, 2011 at 20:46 Posted on Planning 0 20

First of all sincere best wishes to all the forthcoming brides and grooms.

I've read the forum rules and don't consider this advertising but I'd love some feedback regarding White Dove release at wedding venues/churches. I'm considering starting this service and needing to do the "Alan Sugar" style market research to see if it's viable.

Apologies if I'm doing anything wrong asking on here but I'm really passionate about developing this wedding service.

Have you seen this beautiful sight first hand?

Is it something you would consider for your own wedding?

Are you even aware that it's available?

Do you appreciate the symbolic concept of displaying and releasing doves (who actually stay together as a pair for life)?

Anything else that may help me get the info I need.....

Many thanks and best wishes,

joycie x

I believe you'll find the general opinion of most people here is that live animals, in any context, really have no place in a wedding, whether it's considered tacky, cruel or whatever.

I am aware that you can have doves, butterflies etc released at your wedding and personally we would never consider it. None of the weddings I have ever been to have had them.

Many people on Hitched dislike dove releases on humane grounds. You may get a few rather curt responses!

I have never senn it, no, but I am sure I wouldn't really like it. TBH I don't like the idea of using wild (or otherwise) animals at the ceremony, particularly not those that have been shut in a box in the dark on my behalf for half an hour before being allowed to fly off and then returned back to a cage. In short, I think it is cruel and self-indulgent and I am fairly sure that I won't change my mind on this one.

Can you strap some wings onto some of my family members and make them fly off into the sunset? I'm not interested in any other type of animal-releasing at my wedding.

I have seen dove releases twice at weddings, on both occasions when the basket was opened the birds fluttered about in front of the couple and on one of the weddings the bride was quite panicky that the bird was right near her face. the birds fluttered about as obviously there were disorientated by being confined in a basket, both times the birds then flew away quickly and perched nearby but to be honest it was all over so fast that neither wedding had any usable pictures of the bird release it just seemed to be a pointless waste of money.

I saw some nutjob on TV releasing doves every time MJ got off a kiddie fiddler charge. Does that count?

It wasn't beautiful, emotional or stirring but it was a bit funny.

I've only ever seen it at a funeral. I know it's available but have absolutely no interest in it.

IMHO its tacky and unfair on the doves.

I am afraid that pigeon lobbing (as affectionately known in these parts) is in the same category as flying moth suffocation and live fish bowl centrepieces.

My only exception to the no animals at a wedding rule is horses but only when pulling a non-cinderella carriage, not the groom arriving on white horseback type scenario!

If someone has pigeon lobbing at their wedding, I'd love to stick them in a cage for hoours and see how they like it...

Wow, Didn't realise it was so popular.

Seriously though thanks for replies and relevant views. The question had to be asked first.

I have witnessed it recently when a single dove was release in memory of a loved one who could not be at the ceremony. I did think it was beautiful. It wasn't in a dark box but in a purpose built spacious carrier. It was a homing bird flying back to it's home about 4 miles away not being released into the wild to fend for itself. The handler obviously had a great understanding of this and I honestly didn't find any aspect cruel. But hey that's just me!

Once again thanks for replies, oh well I guess time to move on.........................
