Not me but close, have given first aid to someone in their dying moments. They died a little later in the ambulance.

Do you have an awful reason for asking, are you ok?

Because I have, several times. All non-relatives apart from my grandfather. All terribly moving, but I've never once felt any sense of anything other than that their body had stopped working, and consequently, like any worn out engine, they had ceased to function. No sense of anything 'otherworldly' at all. Zilch.

Just interested if I am alone.

I have similar experiences to you JK, been with a few who have died, only one was family, and, well, what you said.

ATG, I don't think JK is trying to score points here; she would never do that.

I have to say I never felt anything 'otherworldy' really, although as far as i was concerned that wasn't her in that bed anyway, no matter how much that image haunts me to this day, I believe it wasn't 'her'.

    Phew!

FWIW My husband has been with a few people as they've died and he is sure that he saw something leave the body on one occasion.

[aside] One of the most moving scenes I've read is in Empire of the Sun, when Jim looks at the sky and believes he is seeing Mrs Victor's soul leaving her body, actually what he is seeing is the bomb exploding in Hiroshima. Makes me howl. ?[/aside]

I have been present at one death and didn't see a spirit leave, or anything similar.

I was with my Dad when he died a couple of months ago. I didn#%92t see anything, but he was reaching out beyond us as if trying to touch someone (he had been seeing his Dad for a couple of days before who had died years ago). After his initial (what seemed like) panic as his body shut down, he seemed to really calm before he died. I believe someone was waiting for him.

You could say that I didn#%92t see his spirit leave, and it#%92s hard to explain, but something definitely happened.

I've witnessed death on far too many occasions, probably at least monthly on average for the past 20+ years, and in all honesty I've never felt anyhting other than sadness or relief, and certainly no spirits.

Yes, at work though, never anyone I've known personally (though several long term patients I've been very close to). If anything it has made me a more convinced atheist, I think. To me a body is a body, most definitely not a person.

O/t a bit: fascinating article in the G2 yesterday about an exhibition about to start of portraits of dying people before and after they died.
