Why do you like living where you do?

sherry, 2 August, 2008 at 21:26 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 51

I'm just curious really.

I love lining here because the beach is 2 minutes walk away. There are some fab fish and chip shops.

There's always something going on, turning on of the lights, town parade yet only 5 minutes in the other direction is it quiet and there are several nature reserves and walk ways.

In 5 minutes I am going to take a stroll to the chippy and then walk along the beach and may have an ice cream (not everyones idea of a nice night but it does for me).

What do you like about your town?

We're just outside Wimbledon Village. For London it's very green - we're right by the common & just up the hill from the tennis. We can be in central london in about 25 min (inc. bus journey to train station). We have lovely pubs and restaurants right on our doorstep.

I do like it, yes - well we moved in March and only moved about half a mile away, if we didn't like it I'd have escaped ?

It's not the world's most scenic place but it's got good road/motorway links, you can be in the city or out in the country within about 20 mins depending on what you fancy, on the banks of the Clyde so lovely views over the other side just a few mins walk from the house, and an ideal distance from my parents/sister ie not on their doorstep, but only about 20 mins/half an hour away.

Nah, not really. I totally avoid the city centre, I feel really claustrophobic in there now. I have been like that since we came back from living abroad, we went from huge open spaces to coming back to the very busy city. I live only about 3 miles away from the city centre but I tend to head in the opposite direction if I want to go anywhere. We are trying to sell the flat and are heading to the 'burbs ?

I love north leeds. its considered the posh bit. well it was until we moved in ?

in all seriousness though...its half an hour on the bus to the city centre, but five minutes walk to the countryside/eccup resevoir where you can walk for miles and not know you're in one of the biggest cities in the country. we are ten minutes drive to two fabulous parks (roundhay and golden acre) but are also near supermarkets and anything else you could need

the only things i'd improve is adding a pub or two a bit nearer and a london style tubular train only one that ran 24 hours would be good ?

I like where I live because it's fairly close to city and country, ok the fens, but it's still country! I can drive to Cambridge in 20 minutes and I can drive to the seaside in one hour. It's close to my friends and family too.

It's all I've ever known having lived in the area my whole life. I'm sure if I'd ever lived in a city I'm sure I'd have LOVED it. Maybe when the kids leave home....

I'm not sure I do really like living where we do.

It's convenient for H as it's 20 minutes or so to Watford where his office is located and 25 minutes by tube or car into central London where most of his clients are. It's 1.5 hours for me to Canary Wharf though.

I'd prefer to live somewhere a bit more rural but that's not going to happen for a while!

It's convenient for my work with a free shuttle bus, and good train links to Clapham Junction/Waterloo so easy to get to Croydon where my HQ is

Other than that, we're here by default really. We wanted a bungalow and plenty of garage/parking space and we wouldn't have got that any closer to central London where H was working

And the big plus is that Catwoman lives in the same town, so that makes it immediately desirable ?

? Loon. We must meet up...

Hmmmm. Why do I like living here? It's as close to London as I can afford...close to Heathrow, close to rural Surrey and the green and pleasant lands too. Erm...there's a nice bakers? ? It's not my dream town, but it's ok, for now. And, of course, the wonderful Smint lives here...what more could you want??

I like where I live as it's very green and on the very outskirts of town.

There are no buses (well a little shuttle bus once an hour) and you can hear the cows, owls, fox, birds etc in the evenings.

If I need/want to get to where there's more hustle and bustle, it's 15 min walk.

We don't get lager louts, everyone knows one another (well near enough) and the scenery is beautiful. We have the Old Kilpatrick Hills on our backdoor too ?

Before we came to live here, I lived on a busy main road, and although it's taken me a while to appreciate the quiet here, I aboslutley love it

I like where I live (Stroud) because it's semi-rural, very friendly and in the middle of the beautiful Cotswolds.

It's handy for trips to the West Country and South Wales. The motorway links are good and Bristol, Birmingham and East Midlands airports are all within a decent distance for those little jaunts across the Irish Sea.

I miss being in the South East mainly for its easy access to the cross-Channel ferries. No more hopping on the early morning ferry for a day's shopping in Boulogne. Now it's a proper expedition, entailing an overnight stay or a horribly early start.

I love Brum, not sure why but have been here 5 years and it feels as much like home as home ever did if not more. I guess I like where I live because it feels small-towny whilst being within spitting distance of the city centre for shopping, going out etc. It's also the perfect location to see the rest of the country from - an hour's drive in any direction is pretty much guaranteed to find you a nice location for a weekend break. The people I work with are fab and Brummies in general seem more friendly and laid back than Southerners - even the driving is less agressive than back home.

I live in New Jersey. I like where we are because not only does our town have lots of great restaurants and shops but we have several lovely parks. We're also about 20 minutes from a couple of great malls. Oh and we're 30 mins from NYC but it'd take too long to list why I think that's great!

    I've never lived anywhere else - I'm a provincial dullard ?

Belfast's not bad all said, there's always lots going on and I suppose I have the city, and 5 minutes drive away I have the country, if I wanted it.

I suppose I'm quite proud of the city now, its really transformed itself, and the people aren't bad either ?

I live on the outskirts of Swansea.

10 minutes west brings me to the Gower - 20 minutes west takes me to Rhossili, one of my favourite beaches ever.

10 minutes east takes me into Swansea city centre.

My village has all the shops I need - post office, butcher, health food, chemist, bank, natural health (massage, relflexology etc), pubs, restaurants - within 5 mins walk.

I have one of the best schools in the area on my doorstep which means most of the teenagers are well-behaved.

I'm only 10 miles from work.

I'm 60 miles from my parents - far enough but also close enough.

At the back of my house I have several miles of woodland cut through with a cement cycle track excellent for cycling / walking / roller blading on. 2 miles on the tracksouth takes you to the beach. Also parkland to walk the dogs on.

    I love living here!

We love where we live - we can walk to Loch Lomond, drive to loads of lovely places really quickly and we're still only 50 mins or so by train for Glasgow if we need to go there (but like Mal, we're increasingly avoiding it if we can). In fact, we love it so much that we're moving just a mile or so up the road in a few weeks, even closer to the Loch. We'll have this place on our doorstep www.lochlomondshores.com

We haven't always loved it, there is some serious social deprivation and some definate no-go areas (if only they would warn the tourists!) and we used to be desperate to move elsewhere. The H got a job offer in Gran Canaria and we went to check it out... we couldn't wait to be home! There was nothing there for the kids, and nothing to do as a family unless you love the beach. We don't. it really made us appreciate just what we have here - gorgeous scenery, brilliant facilities for the kids, lots of greenery, lovely seasons (albeit a bit wet sometimes), hearing the cows in the farm behind us. Simple stuff.

Mal, where are you just now? If you're looking to move, I can really recommend it out this way...

I'm in the middle of the country yet only 30mins from London, Cambridge and Peterborough, and on the London-Edinburgh train line. When I get the train home I can walk (or bike) through the fields to get home which is always a nice way to blow the cobwebs away. There are some good restaurants nearby (though sadly none in the village). House prices are still really reasonable for the short commute to the city

    I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with where I live.

I love it because we're only 15/20 minutes from Central London deoending on whether you take the train or the DLR. The travel connections are fab and outings never need to be planned in any great details as trains etc are so frequent. It's a beautiful bit of London, still village-y and almost totally devoid of chain-stores, instead we have a fabby market and lots of lovely independant shops. The park is wonderful and I love living on the river. We have a wonderful network of friends round here. It's absolutely my favourite bit of London

The hate part comes in becasue I know that we'll never be able to own a proper family home here - it's mind-bogglingly expensive - and we will grow out of our flat within the next couple of years, so we'll have to move further out of town. I don't want to live in London and not live where I do now, but a full relocation would be difficult to pull off.

I guess there's a couple of good things about Dudley. Theres some quite nice real ale pubs not far from where I live and where I work theres some great walks down the canal and around the nature reserve. Unfortunately the bad things out weigh the good. Most people drive like they have never taken a test, the shops are awful, theres no where good to eat out (I get so jelous every time I see a petrus report) and the local accent is like nails on a blackboard.

Its only a 5 minute walk to a beautiful scenic peaceful boating lake which has some gorgeous swans, geese and ducks.

There is a 6 mile circular cycle route which goes round all the town and has some great sculptures along the way plus the majority of the route is in woodland and nature reserves. And no crossing of any main roads along the way.

The estate I live on, despite having a bad reputation (that should have long gone now)is quiet, friendly and safe.

My home looks out onto a stream, which is beautiful as I listen to it every night before falling asleep- who needs a water feature when you have a stream.

I am within 5 minutes walk of a post office, a shop with local produce, a bakery, a butchers, two pubs, a train station and a bus stop.

However we're leaving all that behind soon, I have yet to learn what wonders and delights the new home and new town will have.

I love living here because we strived for it and managed it (for now anyway)

Fab views - excellent wildlife (2 green woodpeckers in my garden today)
    Nice walks
Cambridge about a 5 / 10 min drive away and I dont have to go on the A14 to get there or to work!

    Friends and Family close by

    1hr London 1hr beach

(Despite the fact there ar only 700 people living here and we have no shop just a pub, school and church)

We're in North Wales - family are only 20 minutes away in Chester, and my work is 30 minutes away with a lovely commute through an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (only ever delayed by the lollipop lady or tractors which after having commuted to Manchester previously makes a lovely change!)

Our house is down an unadopted road overlooking fields where we can walk our dogs, but still only a couple of minutes drive to the nearest village (which has great schools), and 10mins to the motorway for H2B's commute to work.

We live in Southampton. I don't love the city, it's a nothingness really, everything is chain shops and it's too small to be a proper city really. But I do love being 20 minutes from the New Forest and 30 minutes or so from the beach. And I really, really love our house - we only moved here in March from a tiny flat and I love having our own space - a garden and a spare room and a huge bathroom.

I love living where I do.

I am sure I have banged on about Sheffield in similar threads before but I'm happy to do it again! ?

I love living in Sheffield because:

Even though it's a big city it is also a very green city....the greenest in Europe. The views from the top of it's many hills are just greeeeen!

I live about 20 minutes from the city centre, next to a park and 5 minutes from another park (Sheffield's largest). I am also approx 20 minute drive from the Peak District. This is THE best thing about living in Sheffield.

The city centre is fab. Your thoughts on Sheffield may be that it is a bit grim, industrial....think 'The Full Monty' but the city has been undergoing massive regeneration in the last few years and it is now magnificent. There are some amazing public spaces which were just made to be photographed!

It has two Universities so the city has a lot of students and I think this makes the feel of the city very cosmopolitan.

I LOVE living here and think I'm very lucky to do so. ?
