Wisdom Teeth

SadieButterfly, 16 May, 2012 at 09:33 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 14

Does anyone else have/had problems with their wisdom teeth?

Mine have never really bothered me before but these past few months i have been having pain on/off. It's been happening again the last few days, i can't describe the feeling, it's not mega pain as such just a lot of aching and uncomfortableness. I've made a dentist appointment but can't get in until a few weeks time, i really don't want them out ?.

Mine used to but not so much anymore. I've forgotten the proper term but they only partially grew, meaning they were always getting infected (nice!).

I had one of them removed at the dentist about 6 years ago. If I'm being honest, it was horrible - I wish I'd had have been knocked out to have it removed!!

I can't have anymore of mine removed as they're at funny angles and too close to nerves in my jaw apparently. So I just make sure I keep them really clean with Cordosyl mouth wash and spend a lot of time brushing the area.

I had one only partially erupted and it kept getting infected. Swilling vodka/white rum round the area was the only thing that helped but a few months back I got an infection so bad I had to take a day of work and go to the doctor for antibiotics to clear it so I decided enough was enough and got the dentist to remove it. If it's just achey the chances are you're just doing the adult equivalent of teething (I have a great deal more sympathy for babies having now gone through this as an adult!) but if it is causing more problems don't be afraid of having it out. I know some people have awful experiences with it but genuinely having mine out was the easiest thing I've ever had done at the dentist - literally 30 seconds of light pressure on the area and it was done. The anaesthetic injection itself was more uncomfortable! It's all to do with the positioning of the roots and the dentist will take an x-ray first to check how near the nerve they are.

I've got one wisdom tooth that came in fine a few years ago, and i've noticed recently that one of my other wisdom teeth is moving and i think it might be thinking of coming in squint! So i'm hoping it decides not to come in, or that i've got it wrong and it'll come in fine!

I got a bit of achey pain when they were first coming through, not constant, just every now and again, it was more annoying than painful. I get it once in a while but im guessing they are just growing a little. When they first started coming through, I had an infection under the gum and that was the worst pain I have ever felt, really really horrible. I dont think you should worry unless it becomes constant pain (although I am no dentist)

I have had three out (2 bottoms, 1 top), after a second infection in a bottom one (the others were removed prophylactically). It was mostly just boring having them out as it took over an hour (the bottom ones were growing at a funny angle). But I needed two weeks off work, the first because of the pain and the second for vanity reasons (as I looked like a butternut squash). No problems since then though, which is fab (was getting constant headaches, sinus problems and so on).

Thank you for your replies ladies.

One is growing at a funny angle, side ways so the dentist wouldn't have them removed unless they really needed to be. Fingers crossed they settle down, it may be something to do with my sinuses.

I'm not sure I have any. Or is that impossible?

If I do have any I've never been bothered by them.

I have no wisdom teeth at all anymore. Had the top two out at the dentists when I was 23 and the bottom two out with an operation in January. Best thing I ever did. You dont realise how uncomfortable tooth pain is until it's gone!

I would say, if the pain is managable, not to have them out. My pain wasnt, I got a lot of pain transferal (ie, my fillings would all hurt if my wisdom teeth were) and I got a LOT of infections in the top ones.

I think I've been really lucky - I have all four but my teeth were quite far apart before so they fitted in quite nicely when they started growing and actually helped my teeth look much neater.

Felt rather idiotic though with tooth-growing ache in my early 20s and buying baby teething soother creams!

    Toothache is horrid!!

Some people are lucky and their wisdom teeth don't come through at all. Wisdom teeth tend to start coming through in your early 20's or there abouts, so if you haven't had the joy of teething in your 20's, then chances are your one of those lucky ones who's teeth never came in!
