Would you expect a photographer

Headless Lois, 11 February, 2009 at 12:44 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 18

To provide you with images (from a previous photo shoot), free of charge, because a modelling agency wanted pictures of your child for their portfolio?

It would probably depend on how much money I had spent on the initail shoot and the feeling I went away with about getting images in future, but probably not.

No, I would expect to pay (unless they were already paid for or I had printing rights in which case I would get them printed myself)

No, why should they? If I wanted pics from a professional photographer I would expect to pay for them!

Would depend how much i had paid for the shoot to start with

if it was a cheap/free shoot then pay for the images then no

if i had already paid a shed load then maybe

No. There's no reason why he/she would. The photographer owns the copyright and unless you agreed some kind of ongoing usage rights with him/her at the time then you shouldn't expect anything.

    Hmm not sure.

If it was a professional shoot and there were, say 20 photos taken but they only purchased 5 and then wanted the remainder for this portfolio I would say they are being ridiculous. If they wanted copies of those original 5 so that they could keep the ones that they had bought and then send the others off I suppose they would negotiate copy costs based on their previous arrangement.

I can't really see the free angle?

No. If anything I would expect the agency to cough up, but not for the photographer to provide me with additional images FOC.

No, I'd expect the Agency to pay I think.

This was a free shoot, a free framed image given, nothing purchased at all. You might ask, but you'd be expecting a no, right?

Really? Why? I paid a shed load to have my drive done, but I can just see the bloke's face if I now said "It was quite expensive, and now I'd like my side alley done too please. For free." ?

It's the same principle - there are still labour and materials involved.

I can kind of see why some people would expect them free after getting the shoot free and an image already. But I wouldnt have even asked for them free

I'd probably work on the basis that if you dont ask, you dont get. Will there be anything in it for you, in terms of potential work/contacts/free advertising?

I would probably expect a big fat 'No' though.

God, and they've asked for more free stuff? That's a quite a brass neck.

No, I wouldn't even ask, because I'd be wandering into Cheeky B!tch territory ?

Is the child extraordinary looking? Would it be worth it for publicity?

Blimey if everything was free in the first place then extremely cheeky - I would subtley suggest that if the agency are that interested then they can pay for the image.

Hmm, now that's interesting. A sort of 'we don't attach any value to our product' line of thought?

Possibly, I was thinking about freeloader types, or people not realising the costs involved.

No. I don't know the agency, but I am aware there are a lot of agencies out there that charge people to register etc and I wouldn't want to get involved with anything like that (although obviously this may not be the case).

JK, I don't think so, but then again we photograph a LOT of children, so I am getting immune to gorgeous child pics
