WWYD - Wedding dress dilemma

kezzburton, 17 September, 2010 at 22:32 Posted on Planning 0 11

I have fallen in love with a Phil Collins dress PC7980 and now I have a dilemma.

My local high street shops are selling it for £660 approx which is too much for my small budget. However I have two choices

I have contacted Landybridal who do not sell the dress but have said they can make it for me for £350 including shipping but it will not be the same because they have not seen it before and would only be working from the photos I have managed to find on ebay.

However, there is a girl in Ireland who has the dress in exactly the right colour, size everything but she wants £500 for it. (I personally think she paid too much for it to begin with which is why she wants more for it). I don't mind having second hand at all as long as it is undamaged (which this is).

So my question is which option would you go for, the landy dress which will not be exactly what I want or the second hand dress for £150 more?

Thanks for your help

    Hi, kezz.

    It's a difficult one.

One the one hand I understand perfectly as I am on a budget myself and been cutting down lots of things.

On the other hand, your dress is onething that will be constantly on view, in pictures, and centre of everyone's attention. If you are happy with Landy making it, that is fine - many ladies on here have used them. Just bear in mind you may not like the result and may have to pay more later to get another one.

I would get the one from ireland, but I repeat, that is just ME, my personal opinion...

Also i found this website where they have it for £550: http://www.justforyoubridal.co.uk/product/phil-collins/pc7980

    Good luck! ?

Personally if it was the one for me (Tried it on etc) and I really couldn't afford the brand new one, I would opt for the second hand one which you know is real and will be exactly the same rather than the china dress which would be made from just a picture.. Definitely wouldn't do that.

Hi, I'd go for the second hand one, that way you'll know you are getting the exact dress. Although Landy do fab dresses it won't be exactly the same and the material and may feel or hang differently. Even if I found one a size too big or small second hand I think I'd go down that route and get it altered. I hope you manage to get one xx

Also £350 seems a lot of money for a high risk China dress, their website normally quotes them at below £200 which always seems less of a risk if it goes wrong, £350 is a fair bit of money to gamble.

Try to do more negotiation with the lady from Ireland, I'm sure you can sill somehow lessen the price for a much convincing effort. It is really important for the bride to wear the wedding dress of their choice for this one special moment.

Hi , thats a lovely dress Smiley smile

I personally wouldn't order from China but that is just me, I would either look for second hand options are you happy with £500 second hand? or when i googled your dress to see it ? i found it at a buy it direct on Just for you Bridal in Bristol for £550. Other thing is , is it in a collection that is at end of season ? If so it may be in the sale next month when a lot of shops get new collections in??

I live on edge of dorset so i will keep my eyes peeled for you

    Good luck finding your dress

I'd get the second hand one, see if the girl will come down a little bit.

I would go for the 2nd hand one.

I have heard lots of horror stories from China but also a few success stories, I am just not brave enough to chance it!

Another vote for the second hand one, but I agree with what stupidlamb has said, can you find out if it is end of season as you may get a better deal on it?

I got my dress from ebay it is a ronald joyce 2009 dress which was £800 originally. Worn once in march this year dry cleaned and then sold on preloved for £400.

The girl who bought it off preloved tried it on and unfortunatley it didn't fit her so she sold it on to me for £150.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the dress, not a mark on it and all I have had to do is have a couple of inches off the length. I think buying second hand can be a big risk but so long as you choose a seller who is very communicative and has lots of information and photos about the dress history then you will be fine.

The ebay lady I got mine from provided all the original preloved sale information so I could see the dress originally came from ireland and there was even pictures of the previous bride wearing it. Ultimately I am very happy with my decision to buy second hand. I have a beautiful dress and haven't gone over budget. Hopefully once I have worn it I can make another lady on a budget very happy too.

perhaps you can haggle with the lady on preloved by offering a quick and hassle free sale. I'm sure she wants the money more than the dress now if she has decided to sell it.

When are you getting married? Do you have time to wait for a sale or see if any other second hand versions come up? How many dresses have you tried on? Maybe you should have another go and try falling in love with something else?!
