Proper literature: The God Of Small Things, anything by Salman Rushdie/Mario Vargas Llosa/Gabriel Garcia Marquez/Toni Morrison/John Steinbeck

Easier-reading but still "proper": The Barrytown Trilogy, anything by Terry Pratchett

Oooh! You have just reminded me FaeBelle13! I really want to read this.

I started reading The Farseer Trilogy this morning - it's my OH's ultimate favourite so I thought I'd give it a whirl.

Personally, I really like "a rabbit called god'

I haven't got a favourite book, but I'm trying to read The Diaries of a Fleet Street Fox at the moment. It's different to what I was expecting and is mainly about the break up of the author's marriage. I got so caught up in it and her emotions that I nearly snapped at the H when he spoke to me while I was reading it as I was so angry at her husband.

This is meant to be good and it's only 20p!

About time he did another book with the witches in. Wyrd Sisters was the first TP book I read.

Terry Pratchett (most of them but not all), Jasper Fforde.

Almost at the end of Mockingjay, the 3rd book in the Hunger Games trilogy, they have been ace, couldn't put them down.

I just finished this last week, beautifully written.

My favorite ever book is Daphne Du Maurier- Rebecca.

Also love Tender in the Night by F.Scott Fitzgerald and Revolutionary Road, Richard Yates (so so much better than the film)

That's where my name comes from - my Mum was reading the book when she was pregnant with me. It is a very good book, the 1930s Hitchcock film is a big favourite of mine - Mrs Danvers is the best b!tch in the world!

Hope you enjoy it! Not seen the film, will probably get round to it but as with most adaptations I've heard it's not as good as the book.

I absolutely love the Hitchcock film, in fact it's probably my favorite film as well.

Jealous of you being named after Rebecca!

The character or the name? Hated the name as a child always got shortened to Becky which I loathe. Now I don't mind Becca or Becks. As for the character there isn't that much info about her in the book but I've always thought of her as slim & glamorous (everything I'm not!)

Haven't seen the trailer or anything, but yeah, it's Stephanie Meyer. It's so different to Twilight though, I wouldn't know that they were the same author from reading them.

Ahh at least your name wasn't changed to Fanny. Primary children can be very cruel!

I always imagined her to beautiful, tall and slim, completely captivating and assertive. Again all things I'm not. I think the reason I love the book so much is that I identify so strongly with the protagonist's sense of insecurity and inadequacy. That horrible bit when they have the party and the b*tch Danvers sets her up!

Kharv - it's really really hard to describe it. There are these things called 'souls', I guess for all intents and purposes they are aliens, but only if you can throw any alien stereotypes out of your head. They life for centuries and travel from universe to universe, taking over each planet. They don't view themselves as invading though, they go to experience, the way that we would travel abroad. They go to planets that are being killed by their inhabitants, they come to earth as they feel that we are destroying the planet and our people, with violence, etc. A small pocket of people find out and resist, and these people retain part of their own mind when their bodies get taken over. The book follows the journey of Melanie (human) and Wanda (soul) as they struggle to share one mind and body, loving different people and the same people, and eventually each other. It really is amazing, I have no idea how she possibly came up with the concept. It's hard to describe and I don't feel like I'm doing it justice, but it's only one book, about 500 pages - I'd really recommend it.

You've covered it really well MY, I loved the book and I cannot wait to see the film. It has Saoirse Ronan (from The Lovely Bones) in it as Melanie I think. I didn't realise it was out so soon ? it is the only book that I have ever read that has made me cry!

White Oleander by Janet Fitch. I've read it about 50 times, it's like comfort food to me (even though it's a pretty depressing book!)

Room with a View - EM Forster

    DH Lawrence - any

Atonement - Ian McEwan (and On Chesil Bay and A Child in Time)

Alan Hollinghurst - The Line of Beauty

And for something easier - Tricia Ashley. Funny but totally predictable. It gives your brain a rest.
