Your first dance Song........?

WelshBride2009, 9 July, 2008 at 12:03 Posted on Planning 0 46

I was just wondering what types of songs everyone has chosen for their first dance?

I'll be wearing a deep red dress and was thinking about using Lady In Red by Chris De Burgh. Or should I choose something more traditional?

What do you think and what songs have you decided on?

Hello welshbride2009, welcome to hitched ?

personally i'm not so keen on chris de burgh, and especially that song, and can i be so honest to say it might be a bit cliched to have that song, especially if you are wearing red? sorry if my honesty offends... ? do you have 'a song' between you and your h2b? a song that means something to you both? if so i would use that instead.

PS edited to remove song - in case anyone IRL sees it!!!

I think we're going to have Have I Told You Lately by Van Morrison.

If it helps, what was important to me was that we chose something that would stand the test of time - my parents chose a song 25 years ago that's still played on the radio occasionally today, and I can sort of see that with ours, hopefully! And that the words were kind of suited to our relationship. The Van Morrison song has always been played at family do's and stuff to so it's quite nostalgic and sentimental to me in that way as well.

Hi, We are getting married on the 9th August this year and as our first dance song we are having 'Amazed' but not the Lonestar version, Duncan James does a cover and we prefer his version its a bit less cowboyish IYSWIM! x

H2B and I aren't very slushy - its just not us so we're thinking about having a 'comedy' first dance.

POST EDITED - as CB often floats around Hitched and we don't want anyone to know our first dance!!!

Thank you for your honesty, thats what I'm looking for. There is one song that we do share and its Rod Stewarts 'Have I Told You Lately' It was playing when he proposed and oddly enough was playing when one of our children was born on the radio.

We are having don't stop me now by queen-we are never ones to do the normal thing! Plus we wanted something that when we have children they would know and hopefully love it too. H2b refused to have anything that was at all slushy either!

We're keeping ours a secret and I know a few people IRL who Hitch so I'm not going to say what it is.

We had trouble thinking of something as we don't have a 'song' that's special to us, but I bought this album about six months ago and the particular song we have chosen made me cry! So I played it for my H2B when we discussing wedding music and he loves it too.

WelshBride2009 - I'd definitley choose the Rod Stewart song over Chris De Burgh. IMO 'Have I told you lately' is a classic (and a beautiful song) and won't embarass you in years to come wheras 'Lady in Red' is already pretty dated. Plus 'have i told you lately' already has special meaning for you.

Well, after me having to admit that when OH proposed I was slighty intoxicated (it was a music festival dammit!) and that i didn't quite remember what song was playing - although I DO remember dancing my ass off to it, I had to admit to OH that I didn't remember what it was and he told me, whilst rolling his eyes!.... BM and CB who were both there bloody remembered and never thought to tell me when I asked cheeky bu**ers!!!

It was "all night long" but played by the Cuban Brothers! SWeeeeeeet! It seriously was brilliant and I now understand why OH couldn't wait until the fireworks to propose!

So in short - I THINK we are having "All Night Long" as our first dance, for comedy/sentimental reasons, as "our" songs are all by Gomez and maybe not quiite first dance material! LOL!

    any comments girls??

That's what I wanted, I had my heart set on it and H2B and everyone agreed (when drunk) then one by one backed out ?. Now we're trying to agree on some slushy crap we can sway aimlessly to. [:'(]

Some may think tacky but we're thinking of Shania Twain - Still the one.

When we first got together loads of people didn't think we'd last, 8 years on we're still going so I think it's quite apt!

I love 'Have I told you Lately'-Rod Stewart, its one of our choices. The other one would be 'Unbelievable' by Craig David which came out as we were getting together and the words are so apt.

I really want 'Sailing' by Rod Stewart as this was my dads favourite song and my OH is in the Navy but I feel it would be too emotional for me on the day xx

We had Al Green 'Let's stay together' We had hoped to have some sort of dancing lessons before the day, but it turned out we didn't quite fit in the time for them, so we opted for shuffling about!!

    Hi Welshbride2009!

I only got engaged last week but already know what our first dance song is going to be, it's Amazed by lonestar, and it seems like it's quite popular, as I've read that another 2 replies to you have chosen the same song!! That song means a lot to me and my hubby to be so it's the perfect choice!

Whereabouts in Wales are you, I'm from North Wales!

My cousin had lady in red at her wedding when I was a bridesmaid - it was about 1986 I think !

It might be slightly cheesy to have that song- but then I think weddings are quite cheesy anyway and if you are doing it in a slightly ironic fashion then it will go down well.

We are having an 80's power ballard for our first song - not sure which yet I am constantly playing the CD to try and choose one. Either love lifts us up where we belong, power of love etc etc.

For us the first dance isn't a big meaningful thing but about having a bit of a laugh and a show off in front of our friends so I think one of the songs we are looking at is perfect !

We're having Just Watch The Fireworks by Jimmy Eat World (futuremrslord, you are forbidden from telling Jonny & Sophie this information!) as it's a special song for us. We were determined not to have something soppy that we would never normally listen to. Loving your choice yeah_whatever!

Welshbride - choose something that means something. Don't worry about being traditional. It's the one day when you and your OH get to have everything your own way. That includes the music!

We're still undecided...I like Snow Patrol 'Chasing Cars' as it's a song that reminds me of a certain period in our relationship but H2B had the idea of DJ Sammy 'Heaven (Candlight remix)' which I like but doesn't really mean much to us....although it IS the first suggestion he has made for our big day so I want to at least pretend that I am considering it (for a week or so anyway).

We're not the types to shuffle about gazing into each others eyes, so the current fave is Crazy in Love by Beyonce feat Jay-Z. We love dancing to it at clubs, the words are suitable and I guess it worked for those two!

Really, really can't imagine having a father-and-daughter dance, not me or my dad's style, plus I have a step-dad well. So I thought I'd drag all 3 dads (my 2 and FIL2B) up for Queen's Don't Stop Me Now. FIL2B danced totally rocked out to it on his own at a family party and everyone loved it ?

It was looking like we were going to have something by Nick Cave for a while, we played an album of his all around India and back on our first holiday together.

Choosing the first dance has been OH's (pretty much only) task and it's taken him til now to decide <rolls eyes>

We're having Fields of Gold by Sting. Personally I think the man is a total arse, (Sting, not my OH, although.......) but it has always reminded OH of our first flat together that did overlook fields and fields of barley so we've kinda got to really!

I'm loving all of your songs ladies.

Feeling like H2B and I need to sit down and run through a list of songs that remind us of different stages in our relationship (there's been 8yrs so there must be a few good ones)

I will keep you posted when we've decided.
