Feather, 10 January, 2011 at 15:06 Posted on Planning 0 59

Hi Everyone

It will be on a budget and Im looking at making alot of things myself and its be abit of DIy wedding.

Can you tell me what things you have made yourself and what you have bought ready made?

Just looking for inspiration about what I can be more creative with and what I should not even attempt...

    Welcome to hitched.

I think it depends on how crafty you are in general, I am completely rubbish.

I have concentrated on picking up bargains. I did some modifications to my ring cushion, I am planning on crystalising my shoes, I've made my place names, photo table, candy buffet (purchased a few jars and scoops etc).

As for other things brides have made - the list is huge... Guest books, post boxes, photobooth type background, invites, garters, veils, boquets, centrepieces, jewellery (think it was Mrs C who made a fab pearl necklace and bracelet), place names, Order of services, Menu's etc, wedding cake, bridesmaid dresses, baskets, wands for flower girls, corsarges...

    Good luck.

I've made the invitations and I am planning on making: the cake, the centrepieces (although I am cheating with this as I am really just hiring all the different components and putting them together in my own little way), the place cards, the boxes to put the favours in, the table plan, the background music for when we are eating, etc, order of service cards, menus, rsvp cards. I'm sure there are other things but can't think of them right now.

I have so much admiration for any b2b who are making their own dresses. I can only imagine what weird creation I would be wearing on the day if I did that...

@ Saphire - I haven't seen a bride make her own dress yet, but sure some could? I think someone was going to, but went looking to get an idea of shapes and fell in love with one.

Im not very creative, so I have focused my attention more on looking for online bargains and getting a no of quotes from suppliers then negotiating with them to get the service that i want at a price that's fair to both me and the supplier.

There are things that are fairly easy to assemble, e.g. Im buying favour boxes from ebay then the sweeties and ribbon serperatly then me, 2 BMs and mum are going to have a favour making day. Im also going to make the table plan.

Other ways to save are to find friends who are good at things and get them to give it to you as a gift rather than them having to order something off the list/ cash, e.g. making a cake/ cupcakes/ good at playing a musical instrument during drinks reception.

I'm not very creative so I have bought easy to assemble favour boxes which I'm going to pretty up with ribbon & fill with sweets. I need to 'doctor' a ring box so I can attach it to my dalmatian ring bearers. I'm doing lots of research online to get good deals wherever I can. The venue provides place names, menus, seating plan etc which I'm going to tweak so they follow my white with pink roses theme. My mum is going to make our little boy who will be 18 months old by our wedding a mini RAF uniform so he looks just like Daddy. I'm toying with the idea of making the cake myself.

Well, I am a glutton for punishment. I am making a load of stuff because I love handmade things. I will be knitting myself a shrug out of angora, I will be making my own headpeice.

Here is one of the lavender-filled love-hearts that I have made. I will make more as favours. I am only making them for the ladies, I don't think that men are bothered about favours. These are dead simple to make (hand stitch), I can give you the method if you like. It's really cheap, I bought lots of mother of pearl buttons, vintage fabric scraps and a massive bag of dried lavender on ebay very cheaply.

I will also be making the bunting, this will be farily easy... not made it yet, but here's the kind of thing I will be making:

I will also be making lace jam jar candle holders (someone else flashed them on here a while ago).

I had better get cracking... tick tock

I am hoping that we'll be able to make our save the dates, invites, favours and table plan. I'm going to have a go at making my veil, and my mum will either be making the bridesmaids dresses or our boleros. Given the amount of time I've got this may change though!

I'd love to be able to make the cake and flowers too, but I think thats a bit of a stretch for my creative abilities hehe.

We're making quite a lot of stuff cos I love a bit of craftiness! The list of things we've done/ are planning to do so far is:

    Invitations

    Table plan

Guest book or equivalent (still thinking about ideas)

    Bunting

Centrepieces - they'll be plants in pots I think but we'll source them ourselves and may decorate the pots with ribbon or soemthing

My mum is making the cake as that would be too stressful!

I'm sure there is more but can't think right now.

Wow theres lots of idea's there for me to think about!!

KnittingVixin - how did you make your favours? they are a lovely idea for the female guests.

LauraSJ - All your stuff looks amazing! It must have taken you so long, but it looks like the effort is worth it. I really like your invites, the snowflake theme would suit our wedding too, as we snowboard every year and LOVE the snow!

Bridebrat - I saw your bouquet on another thread and its gorgeous. The flowergirl wand is very cute!

Tinks - you have absolutley loads! It all looks lovely, can I ask how you made your candles?

Do you all think you have saved money making things or has it been just as expensive as buying it from a shop? I think the DIY element appeals to me, as its you would get such a buzz when people knew how much effort you had put in!

    ?

For me, it wasn't about making it cheaper, more the fact that stuff I make will be more unique than just buying it all from a shop. Although having jam jars as candle holders is of course much cheaper lol

I have certainly saved money but I also feel very proud looking at the stuff I have produced. It puts a real stamp of 'me' on the day.

I have found the initial outlay cost of materials has lasted me a long way..

I would say that I have saved 100's if not over a grand by the day. The teacup candles I have seen on sale for £15/20 each mine must have cost £2 at the most. All the stationary cost about £200 and I dread to think what that would have been if we had had everything made for us. We have a tight budget and so making things meant that we had more to spend on the food and drink (we are foodies so this was really important to us).

The teacup candles were really easy to make. I bought teacups from car boots etc and then wax and ready made wicks at hobbycraft, melted the wax poured it in and bingo!

Thats what I want for it to be personalised to us, so making things seems to be the way to go.

Im going to write a list of what I can make myself and then start looking at the cost/quality of supplies etc.

Im sure I will be back to ask where you bought your supplies etc

    thansk everso much ladies ?

I plan to make - my bouquet, (started) BM's bouquet, (started) all the decorations for the church and the reception room, invites, (started) acceptance cards, O of S, thankyou cards, postbox, centrepieces. I will also do my own photo album and storybook album and a smaller version for the oarents, though obs this will be after the wedding!

If we have favours I'll make them too and maybe the tiara but I may just borrow a friends one!

For me it's about money but also i want things done my way and I am arty/carfty so i think people will expect it .

Why why why did I not think of this before now? Thank you for planting this idea in my head. I knit (although I have only been doing this for a year) and I have a late October wedding. I was wondering what to do about keeping warm when outside, but not nescessarily wanting something to be in photos etc. This is the perfect solution, I can knit myself something nice :-)

Have you found a pattern yet? Any suggestions as to where may be good to look. I guess Ravelry would be a good starting point. Ooh I'm all inspired again.

    Thanks ?
