budget for flowers

Toastcat, 13 August, 2011 at 08:53 Posted on Planning 0 16

Good morning all, hope everyone is well and hasn't been affected by the riots happening this week.

I was curious as to what people's budgets are for flowers. Ours is 400, which would need to include my bouquet, bouquets for my four bridesmaids, and buttonholes (church flowers and centrepieces are a separate budget). Is this realistic? Do you think I'll be able to get all that we need for that money (I know prices vary dependent on type of flower, etc)?

I think prices really can vary depending on the type of flowers you choose and also the area you are from too. If it helps, we live in the midlands and have told our florist that our absolute maximum budget is £300 this is for:

    - My bouquet

    - 1 adult bridesmaids bouquet

    - 11 buttonholes

    - 1 long and low arrangement for the register and wedding breakfast table (we're only having one table as theres only 16 of us for the meal)

The florist said she should be able to do all that we want for between £250 and £300

Don't know if thats any help- I hope so

Thanks Tracey, that does help - I'm also in the Midlands. To be honest, if we can possibly spend less than £400 that would be great, but I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to get all that we needed! But it sounds as if you've managed to get a lot for your money ?

I am in Scotland and I've managed to get my bouquet, 4 bridesmaid bouquets, 1 flowergirl wand, 9 button holes & 2 corsages for around £200, and that was from my preferred supplier, but when I got quotes they ranged from £200-£400 for exactly the same thing.

That's a very good budget if it's excluding venue/church flowers. Depending on what style you would like for your bouquet, I would allow between £60-£100 and around £35-£45 for each bridesmaid but could be much less if you wanted. Buttonholes approx £6-£8 for the Groom and £5-£6 for the rest. I have prices on my website which will give you ball park figures for various designs. Although all mine are artificial, there isn't a great deal of difference in price between realistic artificial flowers and fresh these days. A good way to keep costs down on fresh flowers is to go for a few 'luxury' blooms in your bouquet (callas, orchids, specialist roses etc) and the remainder of the bouquet in seasonal wedding flowers. Also to spend the main part of your budget on your bouquet and less on the bridesmaids as their flowers aren't in the spotlight as much as yours will be. West Midlands, I believe, are on a par with costs in Yorkshire for fresh flowers which is where I am. Hope that helps.

Brilliant, thanks all! I'm off to see the flower lady in about an hour, and now I feel confident that I'll be able to have a really nice discussion without worrying about budget too much!

I paid £280 for the following (fresh) flowers. I'm just outside of London, in Bucks. The original quote was £310 but we haggled down (we'd put aside £400 like you but the florist is relatively new and very young and we thought we might aswell have a go at being cheeky Smiley winking )

1 mixed bridal bouquet (had roses, calla lillies, lissianthus and others)

    3 bridesmaid bouquets

1 grooms buttonhole (gerbera and lissis)

about 9 male buttonholes (yellow gerberas)

    6 female buttonholes (purple lissianthus)

A small vase for the ceremony table:

And the cake to be decorated like so:

Whilst this is true, for the actual blooms one thing i've noticed is that some florists choose to charge vastly different costs for the same requests. I've sent six or seven quote requests all saying the exact same thing. I've been quoted anywhere between £200 and £1200 for the same flower designs.

Be very careful who you choose to go with, get as many quotes as possible and make sure you see portfolios and examples of their work. Also go by recommendation from other brides that you know so you know you're getting good value and good work for your money.

I'm waiting for a quote so will update when it's arrived. I'm actually planning to make paper and button bouquets but am researching all options. My ideal would be real flowers, but my tastes are bigger than my pocket! Still I am curious to know what they'll cost. I'm asking for David Austin roses with seasonal flowers, herbs and foliage bouquet, 3 flowergirl poses, flowers to fill the vintage teacup trios on my big oval wedding breakfast table, wedding cake flowers and some flowers for the vases on the wedding cake table.

Thank You. I was extremely happy with the end result. My poor flower lady, who's retired and does this as a hobby, was so nervous about doing them, as she collected them from the flower market on the Saturday and my wedding was the Monday. But she did a fantastic job bless her x
