Colour schemes

Ajx, 28 April, 2022 at 16:17 Posted on Planning 0 30

When choosing the colour scheme for the wedding (bridesmaids dresses, decorations, groomsmen outfits etc) did you just know what you wanted it to be or did you have a few options? I feel like everyone ive spoken to just knew what they wanted it to be and me and my partner keep going round in circles about it, we are so indecisive!

We’re getting married in a church and then the reception is in a hotel so i think any colour would go for both but I am swaying more towards the black and white, I think it’s very elegant! X

I knew I wanted light blue as the accent colour as the room we are getting married in (and also reception) is blue and called the Bluebird room. Plus it is one of my fave colours so we didn’t take too long to decide!

Aw that all goes together so well! We have free reign to do the reception room up I think that’s why we’re struggling so much

Very blue you see with retro carpet! This is half set up to show the tables when we visited. There is an Art Deco vibe going on here.

What do you and your OH want to wear?

What kind of flowers do you like, or have you seen a wedding stationery design you'd like to use?

What colours would best suit your bridal party if you're having one?

Think about these things and then pick colours that work.

My OH was adamant he was wearing the kilt, which narrowed down the field a little. Then when we were looking at wedding invites, we both liked the same design, which picked out one of the kilt colours, so we went from there.

I think this is what we're gravitating towards most, I just don't want it to look like we haven't tried

At first my partner wanted to wear a navy suit with the groomsmen, which is why I liked the multicoloured dresses, thought a nice bit of colour and have it all mismatched in a sense. Then he said he wouldnt mind the groomsmen and him wearing black tuxes which would obviously go nicely with the black and white them.

The problem im having is i'm not very good at pulling everything together so I think if we were to have the bring colours I wouldnt know how to tie it all together so it didn't just look like there was no theme at all. I think it would be easier to make black and white look more cohesive.

    Sorry for the rambling haha!

I am exactly the same as you! I am also having a really hard time with the colour scheme decision. It is now at a point where it is delaying a few things. I thought I had decided on a light green but I have since changed my mind and want something a bit more unusual. It's a spring wedding in 2024 for me and I just worry about my wedding looking like all the other ones in our venue. It's such a hard decision! I have loads of ideas on Pinterest but I keep going back and forth on ideas. I hope we both make a decision soon though because I know how hard it is! X

Ours is Spring 2024 too! I've put it on this month's to do list to actually sit down with my partner and decide on a colour scheme so we can move ahead with planning. Pinterest is amazing for ideas but there's so many that i find it all a bit overwhelming sometimes! Good luck trying to figure it out x

Good luck to you too! I'd love to know what you end up deciding on! And yes Pinterest is amazing but if anything it's probably made the decision making take even longer x

Both options are lovely! It might be easier to go for the black and white scheme for the main outfits as a classic starting point (plenty of choice, and dresses/suits easily available to cater for all budgets). If you then wanted, you could explore adding some brighter accessories as accents to that classic theme - it might be achievable to have bouquets, floral hair clips/shoes and pocket squares/ties, buttonholes and socks that add the fun rainbow pop of colour? You could also try that out with a black dress/suit in shops in advance. That would then allow you to have floral arrangements/colours in your as venue decor that can draw together a wide mix of colours and still 'tie together'? A spring wedding with bright/mixed floral colours could look very cohesive against black and white outfits. If you can see your venue dressed that might be handy - good luck!

I got a really good piece of advice when I was wobbling on my colour scheme (which is pale turquoises, golds and whites) and getting swayed towards something very different (burnt oranges and blush pinks) which is to look around your house! Which colours do you gravitate towards, which colours have you chosen to have around you every day? The bonus of this is you know your wedding photos will go with your home decor so ideal to be on display!

My venue's at the beach, so my colour scheme came from this (sea and sand) but my eye started to get turned when I fell down a bit of a Pintrest rabbit hole and started to freak out that sea and sand colours at a beach wedding was just a bit to obvious... but then I looked our house and it's filled with turquoises and coastal/nautical colours and I'm constantly gravitating towards this kind of scheme in all aspects of my life so this really is the one that feels the most personal which I think is the best way to make your photos feel the most timeless to you.

This is actually a brilliant bit of advice and if it was the case then definitely I would have to go for the mismatched colours as our house is very bright and loads of different colours! Thank you so much for this! x

I decided that I wanted loads of daffodils at my wedding because it's a Welsh flower and one of my favourites so it made sense to have dark green as a colour scheme (yellow would be way too bright for me 🤣). Also bridesmaids dresses in green tend to look good on everyone Smiley smile That's how I got my colour inspiration

Funnily enough at our engagement party all of my bridesmaids turned up in green dresses, a very similar shade as well and it was completely unplanned! The colour suited all of them so I think that is definitely swaying me somewhat.
