Decree Nisi and Absolute

Yorkshirelass, 14 June, 2022 at 07:12 Posted on Etiquette and Advice 0 4
So my partner has been married before in his early 30s (we are both over 45!) and a few weeks ago he gave me his “divorce papers” so I could keep them safe for when we give notice which is now this Thursday. So yesterday afternoon before he got home from work I was working and decided to check we have all the right paperwork. This one piece of paper he gave me said Decree Nisi in tiny letters at the bottom of the page. Now don’t get me wrong I’m not marriage and divorce expert but I panicked as I know you need the Decree Absolute.
Cue lots of panicked googling and me having a fit about whether he is even divorced!
As soon as he walks through door I bring it up and his face is a picture- typical man answer- I don’t know she dealt with all that. So he goes upstairs and rifles through piles of paperwork whilst I’m pacing the kitchen thinking how I’m going to tell my mum we can’t get married legally on 23rd July this year.FH eventually comes downstairs with lots of papers and a decree absolute.Talk about having a stressful two hours. I could have killed him. I think he even thought he might still be married as he didn’t get involved with any of the paperwork and I was flapping as she was only 24 so I kept thinking maybe she didn’t understand the whole process - I don’t think I do! So the morale of the tale is -keep your paperwork in order.Had to have a gin and tonic after that and had to share it as was so stressed 😩

Oh no, I'm sorry! I would've lost my mind. Men are too relaxed sometimes 😅

Imagine my surprise when, having been together for 5 months, my partner had a stroke and his sister blithely mentioned in a telephone call shortly afterwards that he was still married... (I'm sure he'd said he was divorced, or I might have just thought he was. Either way, it was a massive shock)

Fortunately, everything has worked out (they had been separated for about 10 years but had never got round to divorcing. Typical of him really - he's very laid back and doesn't really have a sense of things needing to be one) and we sorted their divorce a couple of years ago. Mercifully I have all the paperwork safe so I have it ready when our time comes!!

My H2B got divorced at the end of March. All online now so he downloaded the paperwork on my work computer so I could print at work- 4 copies printed!! (Just in case) and in the Wedding box file. We had been waiting years for his ex to actually fill in the paperwork... (nightmare)
All paperwork accounted for for when we have our next meeting with the Vicar.
I can only imagine the panic, so glad it ended well x
